Will a VG30DE or VG30DETT fit in my S12? Any help would be appreciated.

yes, but its REALLY tight.  someone stuffed a vg30dett into an s12 ages ago, but there's NO freagin room.  guys, who has the pic?!??!  travis??

right now i am just looking at options. i am about to get a first gen crx for free so i am looking for something fairly cheap.  the s12 is going to be my daily driver so i want it to be fast/fun.  the crx will hopefully have a b16 type r in it.  i just need more money!

ok so if i went with the vg30de what would i have to do?  custom mounts? driveshaft?

JasterM5Sep 7, 2006, 12:39 pm · #11

You'll probably need custom driveshaft, mounts, tranny mount. OH and it would be a good idea to have an r200 diff from an SE s12.

gerrybgSep 7, 2006, 7:59 pm · #12

If you already have a VG powered s12 wouldn't the existing trannie, driveshaft etc all work with the VG30DE ??

MaxpowApr 4, 2009, 2:17 am · #13

With a Vg30dett why do you need the custom Turbo Manifolds? What is the best option if I want to go v6 turbo in my SE, I am looking at getting a vg30dett but are there other legitimate options?

sideways_s12Apr 4, 2009, 4:05 am · #14

yes you can turbo your se instead IMO it's not worth the hassle of swapping if you already have a vg30e you can do a remote mount turbo or you could tt the vg30 but you would have to get with Bart on that one because I beleive he has something in the works as far as that goes...

btw you bumped a really old thread haha

Approx how much would it cost to turbo the vg30e? I just bought an SE and my buddy at UTI suggested dropping a vg30dett in it, but I don't have the cash for that kind of project right now. Also, I don't know the true mileage of my engine. If I turbo it and blow it, would the vg30dett bolt right up if I swap it later down the road?
sideways_s12Apr 4, 2009, 3:55 pm · #16

that swap is a pain in the ass trust me just boost the one you got if you blow it up it'll be cheaper to rebuild your then to buy a vg30dett and do all the stuff you have to do to get it running...

How bout the vg30de? Is it still a pain in the ass to drop in the dohc n/a?
sideways_s12Apr 4, 2009, 11:44 pm · #18

yes the motor is gonna be a tight squeeze either way n/a or boosted just you'll have alot more headache with the boosted because of the turbos if you happen to blow one you'll have to pull the entire motor to get to it I say stick with the vg30e and have fun with it. But if your hearts content with gettin the vg30de/dett then go for it but you'll hate yourself in the end

yeah the z31 guys are making over 500hp on the single slammer... wayyyyyy too much power for any s12. just go with the cheaper and simpler sohc motor. there isnt much difference, at least worthy...

Thanks guys. I'll stick with my vg30e then. Just to settle an argument, would a 2JZTT go into an S12? Some prick I talked to online insists that a 2JZTT is powering his S12, and it bolted right up. I've got an 85 Supra with a 1JZ N/A, and it doesn't look like it would go, much less a 2JZ with a TT. If a vg30dett would barely fit, then how would a 2JZTT? Oh, also the S12 in question is a Aussy owned RHD. Wouldn't the exaust conflict with the steering column as well?
sideways_s12Apr 5, 2009, 2:24 am · #21

the 2jz would fit better than the vg30dett because the 2jz is an inline six rather than a v-shaped six. As far as it bolting right he's full of shit you'll have to do some modding and fabbing to get a 2jz to fit it will be a tight fit but not as tight as the vg.

Wouldn't an inline 6 be too long? When I measured my 1JZ N/A the way it sits in my Supra, of course I had plenty of room on the sides, but it appeared the length would be an issue. And a 2JZ with a twin turbo, wouldn't it fuck the cars weight ratio too? What about the tranny? Would a Supra 6 speed even fit? I've searched all over the net and as of yet, can't find anyone or any pictures that show a 2JZ in a S12. I found plenty in s13's and s14's, but so far not an s12. Any idea where to look?

I beleive the rb25 is the same in length and someone has done that on here already there's just enough room for the rad and e fan but i beleive it's a slim e-fan

The VG30E flywheel is different from the VG30DE as well as the pressure plate and clutch. I believe the VG sohc has a 6 bolt pressure plate and flywheel and the DOHC VG has a 8 bolt pressure plate and flywheel.

also you have to weld up a engine cross member or modify it because the existing one for the VG30E won't work if you're going to be using the existing VG30E tranny and stock tranny cross member.

Sorry to bring this think back to life, but I just thought of something....

I do know that the stroke on the vg30 either e or de is the same, what about the crank journal and rods.... if they are the same or same size, you could just swap the vg30e crank on the vg30de along with the oil pan and use your stock clutch/pressure plate and keep the original tranny.  It's simpler than fabing custom shaft and tranny mount, and the C tranny you have is sturdy enough for the 220 hp the vg30de is putting....

The only problem left is the exhaust manifold, which will probably fit but tightly....

Just a little thought for you guys

tommyMay 2, 2009, 5:16 pm · #34

The small end of the rods on both engine are different, so you cannot use DE rods on E rods, but the big end are exactly the same dimension, the main journal are also exactly the same. I compared a W vg30e with a vg30dett.... all their is left to do is test fit a DE crank pulley on a E crank, if that works, you can use your stock tranny, clutch and pressure plate on a VG30DE block if you swap the crank and oil pan, and it's a direct drop in.....

no you can't just do that i said in my last post and I'll say it again... please read next time.

The VG30E uses a 6 bolt flywheel and the VG30DE/DET/DETT uses a 8 bolt flywheel. if you swap the crank from a VG30DE you have to use all the clutch components too. and then you have to worry about power steering, alternator, oil pump, A/C etc etc.

even if so what would be the point? you would have invested close to 4 - 6k on just the swap only for 220hp? for that much i can make a VG30et @ 400 - 500hp

wrong wrong wrong wrong.

yes, you can cause VG30DE/DETT rods and pistons on a VG30E/ET

no, it's not a direct drop in what about motor mounts? like you said both engines are different, as far as I'm aware the only thing that will swap over is the pistons and rods. the mount points for the VG30DE/DETT are different from the VG30E/ET

another thing is. you cant just swap the cranks. you have to make sure 100% because just to swap cranks and pistons your basically taking the motor apart.
tommyMay 2, 2009, 7:58 pm · #36

You will have to read too next time buddy.....

What I was saying is if you swap the crank from a VG30E using a 6 bolt flywheel into a VG30DE and keeping the VG30DE rods and piston along with the rest of the block, you will end up with a VG30DE with a 6 bolt crank/flywheel.  You simply ditch the 8 bolt DE crank along with the flywheel.  Now you can simply keep your stock SE flywheel.  SO you keep the same clutch, pressure plate and tranny.  As far as the crank specs goes, they are the same, main journal and rod journals, same stroke.....

I am aware that you have to remove everything the rods and piston in order to remove the crank, but you will be doing this anyways as a standard rebuild procedure in order to inspect/change the rings/ bushing, it's not harder at all than a standard rebuild.

As far as the mounting points goes, I am not aware of anything, I will take your word for it, I was under the impression that the W block shared its bottom with the DE, if it's not the case, then even when uing a 6 bolt flywheel, the tranny might not even bolt on to the engine, and that would be a hell of a problem, but I have not seen any info about this, what everybody is saying is what you are also saying "you cannot use the stock tranny because of the clutch".  The only thing I cannot say for sure, is about the crank pulley, I don't know if it swaps.  I remember someone on the board having to swap a vg33er crank into his vg30 in order to use the supercharger, because the crank pulley did not swap.  If you can fit a DE crank pulley on a E crank, you can keep the DE hardware.

And at the price those N/A goes right now, you are not talking 4 to 6k, you are talking 1k for the block, plus a rebuild kit and you have basicly a new engine with 222hp,

How much do you think it cost to bring the VG30E there, in our chassis, it means nothing more than remote mount turbo and NOW we are talking about a hell of a lot of fab.

Now lets close this, we are going nowhere with this tread

trust me when i say IT WILL COST ANYWHERE FROM 4K - 6K FOR THE WHOLE SWAP

twin turbo swaps go from 5k - 10k i shit you not, ask any Z32 owner who has been in the Z game long enough, he would tell you.

the VG33er and VG30E use different timing gears. VG33 uses a 100k timing gear and VG30 uses a 60k timing gear it's not a direct swap and you will have problems lining the teeth and timing up perfectly. as far as transmisson does. you can not use a Z32 tranny on a VG30E block and vise versa thats another thing i forgot to mention. they just won't bolt up.

as far as turbo goes you can call satan on Z31P.com up and have him make you a custom manifold.

if the VG30E and VG30DETT have the same mounting points you would be seeing alot of Z31 owners putting the VG30DETT in the Z31 more often.

A stock complete vg30de is less than 1000 bucks. all the pictures you showed  us of the vg30e's was all custom work. to have a decent vg30e built you would have to have a custom manifold. injector rails which that guy don't even have any more, turbo pistons, 6 injectors, cams, cam gears, bigger maf, fuel management, Turbo, custom manifolds, custom exhaust, fuel/oil lines. and all the little shit in between that going to nickel and dime you to death. plus that guy is sold out of most his parts for the vg30et.

I've been on all those sites trying to find a way to boost my vg30e. plus if your Se is auto your going to blow your tranny to shit after 250 h.p. so if your auto you have to swap to a manual trans. whitch is going to be more money. vg30de auto tranny are strong and are the same they use on the twin turbo.

building a vg30et in a s12 is a pain in the ass and expensive. with a vg30de  you have to buy z32 vg30de motor mounts tranny mounts witch are only 75 bucks tops, drive shaft  and exhaust , J30 oil pan and front sump pick up.

vg30e's are ok but the vg30de is a much better engine. It's all out a stronger engine.

ever aspect of a vg30et in a s12 is all custom work and to have quality parts made is exspensive. well over the budget of a vg30dett. and the vg30dett is a tighter fit in the z32 then it is in the z31.
jeffwins24May 10, 2009, 7:21 pm · #41

a VG30DE is more expensive in parts then a VG30E.

if you think it's a pain to put work into a VG30E it's going to be even more of a pain changing oil on a VG30DE in a S12... all the work and money only for 50hp more? plus the added weight means you need a new suspension setup.

all the auto trannys from the Z's are shit. even the Z32 tranny's once you past i think it's 500 - 600 (correct me if I'm wrong as i can't SPECIALLY REMEMBER) they take a dump.

theres a transmission shop online that does power upgrades for auto trannys, it's levelten.com i think, these ppl build the same transmissions you see in the 600 - 1500hp auto cars.

if you REALLY REALLY want boost go supercharger (I'm talking about the small ones that look like turbos paxtons, vortecs, etc) hey boost is boost right?

I mean really, everyone knows a turbo won't fit in a S12 so why not get a compact supercharger? at least it's boosted. thats what MC did i think and then switched to a rear mount turbo setup, he's making great power and he doesn't even have a VG30DETT just a normal VG30ET.

the point is it's gonna cost alot of money and work only for 40 - 60hp more.

but as I said before, it's your car do as you wish.

s12guyMay 10, 2009, 7:37 pm · #42

don't get me wrong I would love to build a vg30et. But my Se is Auto and thats not going to last. plus cams, cam gears and a nistune set up will cast you over 1000 for all that.
and thats just a start to build a good vg30et.

A vg30de is going to take up space but I have a cherry picker and tools so thats not a problem.

Right now I'm very torn on what I want to do for a swap. But I know I want more H.P. I would like to have 350 h.p.  Any Swap in a se is a pain. It make we want to break down and buy a Z31 turbo.

jeffwins24May 10, 2009, 7:48 pm · #43

again, a supercharger would yield the power you want and a stand alone all together would be great (stand alone's like megasquirt and stuff like that)

how do you plan on getting 350hp out of a N/A VG30DE?

s12guyMay 10, 2009, 7:54 pm · #44

the plan on swapping a vg30de was to get it in and running and then the next year to buy a just a vg30dett engine and ecu with a hand full of bolt ons.
the na vg30e would be a decent engine to lightly boost. but Im still auto. I have every thing to do a 5 speed swap but a vg bell housing.

jeffwins24May 10, 2009, 7:59 pm · #45

ahh i see. well best of luck to you on your VG dohc journey, let us know how everything went, and what problems you had to over come.

s12guyMay 10, 2009, 8:10 pm · #46

The dohc swap will be a while. I'm still finishing my vg30e. It should have decent power. I wish that guy have those injector rails in stock. I would pick up a set right away. Thats the main part that stops me from building a vg30et. with my na block. I know bartco had said something about makeing some but I've never seen or heard of a finished product.
I'm thinking a 30-50 shot should make for some good fun for now.

Damn my small 180cc dual feed injectors. why couldn't they have made them top feed like most decent engines. I have a set of rails to convert the vg30e to side feed but you have to have the lower plenum machined to make them fit and then come up with custom seals.

jeffwins24May 10, 2009, 8:16 pm · #47

get some top feed VG injectors and you can pretty much put any injector on it.

ya I thought about that too, Most of the guys who have them know what they have and then they want over 100 bucks for them. Think Can I cut the dual feed lines off and use only the top? Or would the top feed lines be too small to feed a proper sized injector? I have a spare set so it would hurt to look into.

junkyard.

go looking for them in the maxima's pathfinder, 300ZX's, and anything nissan car that came with a sohc VG.

hell the guy up front doesn't even know that they are can charges you like 10 or 5 bucks.

if you look hard enough you'll find them for really cheap

with top feeds, you can use any injector and hose (make sure to use clamps)

what i was gonna do with mine is i was gonna take it to a shop and have them port and polish it (the insides not the outside)

honestly is really doesn't matter I would prefer top feed over side feed anyday of the week.

I Know a guys who can build every thing I need to build a badass vg30et. intake, fuel rails, manifolds, and exhaust. he has a cnc machine and can weld anything you need. He would be the guy I go to If I do choose to build my vg30e. But his prices are a lil high. But Your getting what you pay for. I'm not set on a vg30de, The vg30e has potential. I've been going back and forth on both engines.

I'm not worried about my lower plenum for now. It's ported and polished. The Se's upper manifold is made to save space not for power, So that would have to go to make a decent power.
