here some more food for thought.
the VG30DE uses 8 head studs each head and the VG30E/et uses 13 per head.
(helps with sealment which is why a stock factory VG can hit 500hp without blowing thr head gasket or the headstuds first}
actually if i could i would take your plenum, any plenum is better then a Z31 plenum

Vg30de/vg30dett In S12?
didn't know that about the vg30de. That does make me lean towards the vg30e. do you know any one who make a good set of cams that isn't 500 bucks?

the stock turbo cams and pathfinder cams are pretty good for stock cams but double check on the info on jasons' site for the cams.

wait what site is that?
Sorry, but the DE isn't any heavier than the E, maybe by 20 lbs, so stop chewing on hamburgers or throw that big GT45 turbo outta the way, it must weight at least 20 lbs by itself!!! Ah, and a DE cost 1k$, just a little more than this stupid turbo of yours and you'll get more hp than you will really ever need in a s-12 with a STOCK vg30de. If you own a good MIG welder and can wire a car, this swap will be a lot more cost effective then trying to boost a N/A s-12 vg30e.
And the clearance problem, the only thing that will be tight, is the clearance you'll have between the struts towers and the valvecovers, it will fit, it's been done, but it'll be tight. So don't worry about oil changes, for those of you that never did this, the filter is ON the SIDE of the block, not sticking on the valve cover's side right above the exhaust. So just lift the car like EVERYBODY does and get UNDER the car, you'll have no problem.
Man JEFF I'm starting to wonder if you actually read yourself back before posting, those shit you are saying don't make any sense, even if you read it backwards....
Oh and btw a centrifugal supercharger (yes that how those are called) will require a custom bracket, custom pulley and all the above mentionned (ECU, Fuel rail, injectors, IC, piping, etc...), I do not think it's easier than welding 2 engine mount and 2 tranny mounts, or you could throw an Xterra supercharger, but you'll have to swap the crank to use the right pulley and cut the hood, that's even easier..... god!
Just my 2 cents!

ANY BOOSTED ENGINE REQUIRES THOSE MODS your just stating whats already been said over a billion times when you go boost on a N/A motor.
in my opinion it would me cheaper and less time consuming to supercharge a VG30E then drop and wire a VG30DE. and not everyone has access to a mig welder. as far as ECu i already said it, a standalone or if you don't like DIY stuff go and get a tune at a shop (good luck finding someone who tune's VG S12's)
I NEVER EVER had to lift any of my cars to get to the oil filter including my VG30ET, CA20E, KA24E, VG30E.
look at how much spare that takes up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what are you talking about tight fit? it BARELY FITS AT ALL!

the VG30DE/TT weighs alot more then 20 pounds over the VG30E/ET.
a centrifugal S/C may require all that work but how much more work does it cost to put a S12 VG on boost without mounting it near the tail pipe?
i think the S/C is a better idea over all, instant torque, instant power. pretty good.
look i don't care what you think, it's simple fact. a VG30DE/TT is not a cost effective nor a simple swap. and what if you DON'T have welding equipment? i guess your gonna need to pay someone for that.
the VG30DE/TT is not a practical swap is what I'm trying to say all for 100 - 50hp look at the money your about to spend.
- engine
- wiring
- rebuild
- driveshaft
- tranny rebuild
- welding
- custom crossmember
- radiator
- pusher and puller fans
look at how much you already spent? and if it's a twin turbo were not even done doing all the pricing.
with that much you could have a VG30ET nearing 400 - 600hp range.
FYI, a centrifugal supercharger isn't instant, it has some lag to it. It's just like a turbo, only crank driven instead of gas driven.
Those are an actual compressor, roots blowers are instant because they are positive displacement pumps.
oh and by the way turbos weigh a little more then 20 pounds try 35 - 70 pounds (smallest to the biggest you can find)
any by the way my stupid turbo can make more power then a VG30DE N/A anytime it wants to. no one ever said car tuning and modding cars was cheap.
and a turbo WILL take a HUGE bite out of your wallet, this goes for any turbo.
jeffwins24the yard has any turbo for 50 bucks here
and a turbo WILL take a HUGE bite out of your wallet, this goes for any turbo.
Same here.... scored a swaped bb gt28 on a z32 3 years ago for 50$, unfortutnatly, my car got stolen 3 weeks after.... I wonder if it has anything to do with it....
Oh and jeff, you are still debating the stupid DETT one, I'm talking about the N/A, because it's that much easier.... and when you'll have finish with this turbo piping FMIC, turbo (or SC in that matter) and all, you will have a v30et that weight alot more then the DE, you will have a lot more fab to do (bend pipes, find a way to mount the supercherger/turbo and a lot thinner wallet (after all you are the one that said "and a turbo WILL take a HUGE bite out of your wallet, this goes for any turbo") So if you want to be cost effective, just drop the darn VG30DE n/a engine in the darn car and call it a day.
And I don't know how you change your oil, but the drain plug is UNDER the car and you need to get UNDER it anyways, except if you own a stupid shit box that burn 4 pints every 3000 miles, but then again it might need a REBUILD.
Facts are facts, and swapping a SIMILAR engine in a car will always be easier then going F/I on a N/A engine, even more on a s-12 with a VG30E which has no where to put a turbo on the Y pipe.
And stop posting DETT picture, you are just proving me right, if the DETT fits with 2 t25 on each side, double the piping and 2 IC, the DE will drop like a stock.
And don't forget to go crazy on your suspension setup after putting that turbo of your in your z31, you will have all the weight distribution fucked up....lmao you don't screw up a car's balance that already wheight over 2500 lbs by adding 20 or 50 pound on the front, or you could just relocate your batery.... Hell you would have to change your suspension with me driving it as I weight 115 lbs, which is probably 100 less then a lot of guys posting here and still we drive the same cars with the same suspension.....
Oh and forget about all I said, you will never ever learn from anyone here, since YOU already know EVERYTHING. Keep posting stupidity here and spreading your ignorance around.... ones again and for the last time, just my 2 cents!!!

#1 the VG sohc and the VG dohc are different engines, nothing from a VG30DE will bolt up to a VG30E except for the rods and pistons. they may have the same name VG but that doesn't mean jack.
#2 the VG30DETT i post BERALY I MEAN BERALY cleared the strut towers, if nissan had angled the head a little more wider the VG30DE/DETT wouldn't fit in a S12 AT ALL.
#3 you must really be ignorant. the Z31 N/A has a 50/50 weight ratio, the Z31 turbo has a 51/49 weight ratio, oh yeah i'm gonna really fuck up my weight distrubtion you forgot what happens when you mash the pedal, weight transfer and then most of the weight evens out.
#4 lets get something straight, my car and your car are not the same, so when you say WE i hope your talking about someone else because I don't own a S12 anymore, thank you sir good day
#5 piping for a turbo is cheap, you can go to a exhaust shop and they'll charge you 50 bux for the entire set up of pipes, and if you can't afford pipes you shouldn't be modifying cars at all right now.
#6 how am i being ignorant? it's fact swapping a engine for 50hp more, it's fucking stupid. i would NEVER swap my VG out for that.
facts are facts as you said and the fact is that the VG30E and DE don't have the same bolt up patterns, the VG30DE and VG30E are two TOTALLY different engines despite the names. it's like a 302 carb from a branco and a 302 EFI from a mustang, you can't convert and use the manifolds from the 302 branco on the mustang, their the same engine but designed differently with different bolt patterns.
stop hating and lay off the haterade. if the VG was a participial swap EVERYONE would be doing it.
good day sir :
Deleted.
I was being sarcastic you #%$# head, swaping a DE for a E is gonna upset the weight distribution even less then adding a T to it. I was just using your argument against you, in case you didn't realize it. SO stop calling me ingnorant and start learning how to read and think properly!!!
Now I don't give a damn if you cannot use the stupid oil pump, timing belt or head stud from a DE on a E, you are missing the point, I'm talking about welding 4 stupid mount (2 tranny and 2 engine) in a S-12 and mount the WHOLE stupid DE (because it fits) and call it a day!!! And I don't want to hear about the VG30DETT "barely fiting", remove half the piping and the 2 t25 and it'll fit just a little tighter then the E is already.
And renting a MIG welder for the week end will end up costing 50$, the same as having your pipes bend by a muffler shop, so stop saying it's out of reach. And by the way, adding a turbo in a S-12 SE chassis is not at all easier then welding 4 mounts, ask the few who did it and they will tell you. Now in a z31 it's a whole different story, but this is CLUB S-12 just in case you didn't realize it yet so stop filling us full of shit with your z31 crap... and that's it I'm over!
Good day sir!!!
edit: OH and MY car is a lot different then all of yours, when I talk about our car, I'm talking about the car this forum's all about, which is the s-12, (200sx, silvia, gazelle, 180zx, etc.....)
why does it seem that everyone is against jeff in this thread? so far pretty much everything ive read from him on this topic is right. ive owned both z31 and s12, XE and SE, from all the research ive done on both cars, DE into an s12 really doesnt make much sense, 1k for DE, sure, but you go nowhere once your done, cause you cant NA-turbo the DE, you have to buy an entire DETT motor. So after the 50hp, if you want more (most do) you have to spend a few grand to get the TT motor in, whereas if you had stayed with the E, and done a 30E-T conversion, it would be less money spent in the long run.
As far as options aside from the remote mount, how come no one really mentions BoostedVG's setup with his own crossover pipe? no offense, i understand that MC's turbo project is to save money, but it looks haggard as hell. i like the idea and how well it works, but i lean away from it simply becuase of how gawdy it looks.
Theres lots of options for going turbo on a VGe, and 220hp definately not more than enough for any s12, SE clocks in at a hefty 2640lbs. the Z31 ranges from 2888-3031 fully loaded(89 turbo i believe) and those do well with over 500hp DD
sorry for bringing this back up, but i just read it all and got a little frustrated with people bagging on someone who has, pretty much entirely accurate info.
^ because they wanna make me look bad. the stuff i learned is what i have researched on the Z forums. and on the Z32 forums, anf from AZ-Zbum him self. it's called SEARCH look up prices and compare.
A TTswap WILL cost anywhere from 5K - 10K thats a complete swap done and wired up and running.
and then parts will kill you, what if one of your turbo's blow? you'll need to pull the engine just to change the turbos so thats two GT/T25's or 28's thats easily almost 1,000 dollars brand new from garrett them selfs or from a Z store.
again why not go a simple route instead of all this fabbing.
V it's not a turbo it's a supercharger
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&...tab=wi&um=1
you can cut the AC and there thats where the supercharger would go.
internals can hold up to 550+ but i honestly wouldn't trust 24+ year old internals on that kind of power. if anything i would use Twin turbo rods and pistons for power over 500hp. but the tuning has to be 100% perfect A/F mixture.
David Bthe yard has any turbo for 50 bucks here
and you know the turbo is good how? for all you know the seals could be shot, a rebuild kit would cost around 97 buxs total tax + shipped included and then you have to take it apart for a rebuild or take it to someone and then you have to have the turbo balanced which is gonna run you 50 bux.
it's less of a hassle to just buy a turbo new or a rebuilt unit then a $50 J yard turbo...
J yard turbos are like Ebay turbos, it's either a hit or miss.
tommyit'll fit just a ALOT MORE tighter then the E is already.
fixed it for you.

The turbo s12's were about 2,700ish but the SE's were 3,000lbs. As for Jeffwins being "picked on" I think that is hardly the case. There is a reason most people here don't take any of the things he says seriously. If you wanna defend him thats fine but I would suggest to do a little research on his threads and some of the whacky shit he has said over the course of the last two years. Here are a few great examples for you:

sorry bout the inaccurate info for the weight, i was sourcing wiki , and yeah i found a different site about the SE, and its saying 2975 fully loaded...again, sorry bout that.
as far as jeff is concerned, i was talking about this post specifically. i dunno about his posts in years past, but when it comes to things the s12 shares with the Z, it would seem he knows his stuff pretty good, nowadays at least. cant speak about the past. again, in this post his RESEARCH is pretty much accurate. and im guessing the comments were made in frustration to things being brought up when he was green.
If someone were to tell me that right now i dont know anything about cars because i blew up my first nissan due to that i didnt know what detonation was/sounded like, id get a little irritated too.
people grow and learn new things every day. just because someone said some stupid things years ago, that dubs them a moron for all time? regardless as to how much research they have done in an effort to NOT say inaccurate/dumb things anymore? to me, no offense anyone, that is childish
on an opposing note tho jeff, tho im trying to stick up for you a bit, throwing a tantrum on an online forum, is definately childish.
Keep it civil.
As far as I know, my figures are accurate, based on multiple sources.
If you go down to the specs it lists the SE's curb weight at 3,000lbs. In Washington we also have the curb weights on our titles and it says my SE is 3,000lbs on that as well.
And why are you guys STILL taliking about the stupid twin turbo???
I am talking about putting a VG30DE. And for it not being powerful enough, Who here has more than 220 hp in their S12 and can confirm that it taks WAY more for it to be enjoyable on the STREET, I'm waiting for you guys, but in my idea, an N/A 220 hp car in a 2700 lbs car is good enough for me, with the right suspension/chassis mod, it's more then anyone here will use anyways, except in a drag race/straight race, but if that is your thing, go buy another platform.... IMO. And that centrifugal supercharger is the worst thing ever invented on a car... it spools like a turbo, it's not power on tap, which is the downside of a turbo setup, and it doesn't spin as fast as a turbo, which is the supercharger downside... so going with a centrifugal supercharger is a lose/lose situation in my opinion, both the turbo setup and a positive displacement supercharger are better option in their own right. But still again that is what I AM thinking.... RIGHT??
And the DE, without the stupid t25, will fit in the chassis, it's just a matter of wiring (which is always the same with any swap) and welding 4 mounts.... so stop saying it's out of reach! It's not drop a KA in a CA kind of deal, but it's a lot less complicated then going Sequential twin turbo in a z31... IMO....and In everyone's opinion on that matter...
Tommy, RELAX! You get worked up about this stuff, its just a discussion, not an end of the world situation! If you feel its fine, or feel you're gonna do it one way or another, then do , no ones going to stop you but yourself! Just dont get so upset over a few responses here and there.
The whole point is, Physically yes, both the DE and DETT will fit in the bay, however the modifications necessary to make it sit right and run right aren't really worth it for the gains in most poeples opinions.
I LOVE the VG30DE, and would love to build it as an NA Screamer. Its head's sit so close to the strut towers though, it would worry me that heat would become an issue real quick with a VG30DE or DETT.
Personally, I like any 6 Cylinder japanese engine. Doesnt matter what age it is. so dont feel like I EVER hate on them =P
tommyand it doesn't spin as fast as a turbo
does it really matter how fast it spins? a supercharger like that would always have less ware and tear then a turbo because it spins at such low RPMS.
turbos can spin up to 200,000 RPMS and superchargers up to 70 or 90 thousand RPMS.
it doesn't matter how fast it spins just as long as the power that is desired is delivered to the engine is all that matters.
Mr.Tommy though, look I'm not saying the Vg30DE is a bad engine, it's just not a practical swap from 85% of the S12 owners here. it is a very good engine though, it's just not practical.
i don't know why your excluding the VG30DETT it's the same engine as the VG30DE except the VG30DE has no turbos.
what I'm saying is look.
if you have the money, knowledge, ability, determination, sweat for a VG30DE do it!!! no one is telling you, you can't do it. all I'm saying is it's not a practical swap is all.
the VG's in general are a VERY VERY powerful monster.
the SCCA banned the 1000hp VG30DET(T) in the Z32 race car JUST to keep the competition leveled, in 1995 when the Z32 came back with it's new engine it was a V8 VH45DE(T?) LMAO ya jus stuff a V8 in there lol.
All I was saying it that the DE is a lot more practical to fit and work on because the major clearance problem with the DOHC is with the two turbos and strut towers. And the stock DE beats the ET and is N/A, which is a plus, since you don't have any lag putting the power down. The VG30DETT is a monster for sure, but I do not believe that our chassis can benifit a lot from that monster. And I totally agree that the DE is not a bolt on drop in, but it's a lot easier than trying to fit the 2 t25 on a DETT and come on, if you really want to get decent power outta de DETT, you gotta swap the turbos and now you are really gonna have a clearance problem... that's why I ruled out the twin turbo VGG30DE long ago in this post. And on the centrifugal supercharger, it doesn't spin as fast, so doesn't boost as high as a similar turbo, just like a standard supercharger but has a lag like the turbo, so you end up with the downside from both the supercharger and the turbo... so it's a real bad choice IMO....
Now lets settle this and lock this tread....
Peace out
Tom
This thread should stay going man, lots of good debating going on here, besides the supercharger/turbo part, thats a different monster
No need to lock a thread when nothing is upsetting anyone about it.
Lots of good info has been brought up, described, and reinforced in this particular thread. Its worthwhile to leave it open for now incase MORE good information gets brought into light.
tommyAnd the stock DE beats the ET and is N/A, which is a plus, since you don't have any lag putting the power down.
i would have to whole heartedly disagree with this. the ET or E-T conversion even, has been proven to be boostable to 450hp on pump gas, with entirely stock internals. and the "lag" would more than be made up by the OVER double HP, even with a mild build making only 300hp, (lol, mild build) with a smaller turbo designed for those numbers, would have less lag, and certainly spank the DE, block to block, stop light to stop light. keep in mind that the 220hp you want is rated at the crank, so its <200whp
IMO, 300hp even in a 2700lb car, is still not a whole lot, and would still be completely streetable, when the rest of the car has been done right. With the ET, you can reach those numbers for under 1k dollors, be just as reliable, and leave miles of potential down the road HP doesnt start to become unusable on the street until you have so much that your car cant hold on to anything, which if you have the right setup, 300HP is no where close to that limit. Sure you can burn the tires alot easier, and it would definately get squirrely, but as long as you know how to launch the car properly and mitigate the power right, even 350-400hp at the wheels would be able to be fully used.
i personally am looking for 350-400hp at the wheels out of my VG on pump gas, and am finally in a position where i can start ordering parts to get me there. If 220hp NA is what will make you happy, thats all the better for you cause you wont spend as much as allot of other people out there, but you cant possibly say that its more than ANYONE on here will use, MC is boosting 10-12psi on his remote mount, and BoostedVG last i heard was pushing similair numbers. according to dyno results listed here http://az-zbum.com/dyno.results.airfilter.ae.shtml its a little more than the HP you wanted, but rated at the wheels
i LOVE the DE/DETT, but bang for the buck, ET is one of nissans greatest accomplishments IMO. plus with our cars, you dont even have to muck around with a wiring diagram to get it to function right. course then again youd have to find an SE to pirate parts/cpu from...
I would give anything to have my engine bay THIS CLEAN
he's making 600 or 650hp if i remember correctly
A VG30ET would smoke a VG30DE at 14psi. I'm sorry but a N/A can't win against a boosted motor.
it's like saying a 16 valve 4AGE would win against a CA18ET it might, but all the CA18 has to do is turn up the boost and it left the 4AG in the dust.
What?! Who the hells needs more than 300hp in a 2700lb car??
STi in stock forms are pretty quick.
This is for a 2004 STi
Weight - 3,263lbs
Stock HP - 300hp@6000 rpm
(http://www.cars101.com/subaru/impreza/wrxsti2004.html#STi)
So, you're talking about a car that weighs roughly 563lbs less and makes the same HP.
I honestly don't see why someone is going to need more than 300hp unless they're drag racing. You don't need 300hp for drifting or auto-x
Personally, I'm shooting for 200-250hp out of a CA18DET cause for a car that weighs 2400lbs (my notch), it'll be plenty of power for me.
jeffwins24A VG30ET would smoke a VG30DE at 14psi. I'm sorry but a N/A can't win against a boosted motor. That is really comparing apples and oranges. Here is another way to look at it: it is kinda sad stock for stock the 1.8 turbo ca18et makes just as much horsepower as the n/a 1.6 4a-ge. I mean the ca18et has 200 more cc's plus a turbo and it makes the exact same amount of hp. How about we throw adjustable cams and cam gears, headers, exhaust, intake and ecu tuning at the 4a-ge and compare it against a stock ca18et. Would that be a fair comparison? Lets all think long and hard about that one I know it is a tough question.
it's like saying a 16 valve 4AGE would win against a CA18ET it might, but all the CA18 has to do is turn up the boost and it left the 4AG in the dust.
As for the vg30e at 14psi to stock vg30de comparison I would still rather take the de for the all around package. And the stock vg30e at 14psi would not "smoke" the de it might win by a little (assuming this is in an s12 not their original chassis). A vg30e with the stock turbo at 14psi and everything else stock would probably make maybe 240-250 crank hp. The De makes 220 crank hp stock. That is not a huge difference. Just because something is boosted doesn't automatically make it better. On the track hp for hp n/a is generally superior due to the fact you don't need to deal with turbo lag and have immensely better throttle response while cornering.
RedneckThat is really comparing apples and oranges.
On the track hp for hp n/a is generally superior due to the fact you don't need to deal with turbo lag and have immensely better throttle response while cornering.
sorry redneck i was trying to keep it as stock as possible without modifying one motor and not the other. it wouldn't be fair if you just modified the 4ag and not the CA18, yes the CA18 has a turbo from factory but thats just the nature of the motor and how it's built from factory.
Your right about that, but you have to remember modifying a N/A (unless it's a V8) is gonna cost you more money to build then a boosted motor. your right about the track hp and N/A, cornering though, i could see the advantage to that.
what ever. both are Vg's and both are great motors built for their time.
IN MY OPINION i still think a Vg30DE isn't practical
Thanks guys, I was beginning to believe that I was the only one here with some sense of realism... honnestly, who here as 500hp in their 2700 lbs car and are not satisfied with it... and IMO N/A is a LOT better then F/I, yeah, you don't have the same hp numbers, so the same bragging rights as the boosted engines, but you have a lot more satisfaction when driving your car to it's limit then you do pushing a car to 1/2 it's limit before you run outta gut/traction/friction or simply road....
Anyways, it's my own opinion and yes I would be gladly satisfied by a N\A DE with 4 cams, exhaust and intake... yes think ITBs lol It will NOT make higher numbers then your boosted ET but will have a nicer powerband and will be a lot of fun to drive.... *edit* and less of a bitch to work on and maintain.... *edit*
jeffwins24what ever. both are Vg's and both are great motors built for their time.Practical is a broad word. I personally don't see what would be so hard about doing a vg30de swap compared to a vg30et swap into the s12 chassis. The vg30et swap would actually probably require a lot more work compared to the vg30de because the z31 turbo engine won't drop into an s12 and needs to be heavily modified to fit. That is why you see a lot of people suggesting going remote mount if you have an s12 SE to avoid all that. As Tommy was saying the nice thing about the vg30de is that it isn't turbo so you don't have all that plumbing and turbos to make fit. Either way like you said both engines are great so you really can't go wrong whichever one you choose.

nobody can say "you would have more fun" this or that, everyone has their own personal preference, which is why fun debates happen.
300whp in a 3k lb car i imagine would be tons of fun to drive, ive driven my buddies wrx->sti conversion, hes making about 310 to the wheels, and its a blast to drive, but i know the car can be faster and be an even bigger adrenaline rush (for me, and for him) which is why he is still seeking more HP, and im all for him going for it.
i personally LIKE the sudden launch and incredible power increase you get with a turbocharged motor, the sound of the turbo screaming as your car goes hurtling down the road or twisties. Luckily i have an SE, so the most logical route for me is to NA->T conversion. it also helps that im a certified welder and work in a fabrication shop where i can pretty much make whatever crazy crap i feel like.
But on the note of DE in an s12, ITB i imagine would sound SICK, if i still had my old XE, that might actually be something id wanna do. i wouldnt mind a high HP boosted car, and a lower HP light weight car for DD and just screwing around. i had seen a 2X0z that was turbo'd with ITB, some crazy plenum design, with the TB inside the sealed plenum to keep pressure in.
It all sounds like opinions to me.
In that SE review, it says we have 3.7. I thought it was 3.9. and it also says the timing gears are chain driven.
Sorry to be off topic
I believe the above link is from cls12vg30 who is mentioned in this thread http://www.club-s12.org/about.php so I would think his info is fairly accurate.
He lists the SE curb weight at 2975. I think that is a little conservative and it probably didn't have much fuel. It makes sense the SE would naturally be heavier. It has bigger brakes and a piggy vg30 in the bay. The turbo had smaller brakes and an engine around half the weight. 300ish extra lbs are about right for the heavier vg30 and beefier brakes. And yeah that article did have a few misprints on the tech specs but I still think the curb weight is accurate as were 93% of the other tech specs.
If my memory serves me right, the VG30 is about the same weight as the KA24, a little heavier but not that much, and the KA24 is about 100 lbs heavier then the CA18ET. And the brakes are not THAT much bigger, might add a couple of pounds from the rotor, but I doubt the rest of the system is any heavier... Someone should weight is SE on a REAL scale, the weight on your registration is probably way off... hell my 88 XE hatch was rated at 1060 kg -> 2336.9 lbs....
which I highly doubt is correct....

I sourced two references from club s12 saying it is basically 3,000lbs. It is almost as if you completely ignored my previous post. My registration also says it is 3,000lbs as well. The registration for my s13 says it weighs 2,700ish lbs which is correct for that as well as it is common knowledge s13's weigh 2,700 on the low end and and 2,800 on the high end stock. Maybe where you live the registrations curb weight listings are inaccurate but in Washington State they seem basically dead on. Your right about the brakes not being that much heavier but it does add a little additional weight so I figured it was at least mentionable to add.

well forgive me for bumping an old thread, but i finaly feel great that i have some knowledge to drop in an engine thread.
here are some FACTS:
1)the motor mounts on a vg30e and DE and DETT are all the same
2)if they can put a dett in an 510 than you can put one in a 12
3) DE, is not practical AT ALL you hp will top out a 240 or less
NO ONE has broken that limit EVER on an N/A de
4) maxima clutch and flywheel will solve your trans problems
5)DE's and DETT are EXPENSIVE to maintain.
6)DETT is a better engine than the rb. in many ways.
7) dispute the above and ill kick you in the junk (jk thats purely speculation) but the tq numbers are more even and better increasable through little mods on the DETT.
Cool sorry for bumping an old thread, but stella influenced me.

This is good info. Very little but very good. I can breath a little easier if the vg30dett and vg30e mounts really are the same. So far i'm going to have a new y pipe and drive shaft made other than that i'm lookin to do any mods nessasary to the chassis.
vg30dett swap FTMFW. I can not wait.
"DETT is a better engine than the rb. in many ways."
+1,000,000
what else would you like to know?
i have tons of info now on the vg30de(tt)
fyneyoungstunna1)the motor mounts on a vg30e and DE and DETT are all the samewrong. the bolt holes line up right but the DOHC motors sit about an inch and a half higher than the SOHC. when i helped put a dett in a Z31 we cut the mounts at the cross member down and re-welded. then slotted about 6 or so bolt holes on the pan and the z31 pan fit like a glove.
and from my experience the dett swap isn't worth the time and money, at least in the z31 which has a turbo option.
has anyone ever compared the x-members of an SE s12 and z31? like frame mounting points and overall width?
poly mounts will solve the height issue.
one of the only reasons i chose the sinle cam over the dett is because its cheap and easy to work on. if i had a tt Z to begin with thats the motor that would stay in. They are more powerful than an rb could fathom.

I am very curious about the x-member across the board: z32, s12,z31,m30,and Ka hardbody.

Here is a couple of pics of a friends Dime "Red" with a VG-30DETT if this can be done...
By the way, Dave said if he had to do it all over, he would not.

That's a mighty impressive fit. I can only imagine how hard it is to do a service in that engine bay.

Actually, it isn't too bad. Spark plugs come out the top and the oil filter is reach-able from underneath, so the jiffy kid can even do that. Oil ins and outs are in the usual locations.
Sure the alt. is a toughy but how often do you need to do that?
Wolf
Sounds like a good plan, the weight bias can be dealt with through proper tuning. First order of business is move the battery to the ass end chuck the visco-fan and get/make a fiberglass hood.
Looking good.
Very nice and a good read 2
