Ok folks i installed the z31 lsd today, and all i can say is it was a piece of cake, everything bolted in and its ready to go back on the car now, so all i need is well everything else for my car now, motor... suspension etc... oh btw i swapped the final drive gear over so i could keep all the stock 4.11 gear...

Did you just swap the LSD into your existing case or did you swap your gears into the Z31 case?
k sweet.. now what year did you get it from.. and the stock axles pop right in and work ok...?
Ok, see, now we've got at least three confirmed cases of MKII S12's having easy LSD swaps.
Not a single person has tried it on a MKII though?
the 2nd one is "MK.I" right dan?
mk1 or mk2 shouldnt make a diff both share the exact same rear end.... all we need now are pics and the exact year he used and we can clean this up with a basic how to and move it to the already answered Q&A
i think the only lsd's that came in z31's were the 87+'s and the 88 shiro's got Vlsd's hopefully he didn't get it from a shiro because there were only 1000 made
I thot all Z31 turbos got VLSD and the Shiro got Clutch
Ya its been awhile since I have read anything about Z31's ( i hate mine) so you could be right.
erm did u have the solid axl or IRS ?
I thot all Z31 turbos got VLSD and the Shiro got Clutch
trust me...I've done a bit of searching on this subject.
Mid year 87 300zx TURBO ONLY have a clutch LSD all the way till the end of z31 run (1989). The shiros got a VLSD.
Jesse, Thats sweet. I have the same questions as previous people have posted.
why did the special edition get a crappy vlsd instead of a better clutch type?

I thought Canadian models were equipped differently...But I am definately no expert

I always wondered the same thing, but Westside is correct.
The z31 lsd fitting makes perfect sense as i've posted about the Nissan Motorsports LSD part numbers being the same between the Z31 and the S12 before. You would run into problems on an Mk1 because the Mk1s use 10mm ring gear bolts where as the Mk2 uses 12mm. You can get the earlier style 10mm units through Nismo to suit the Mk1 S12 and also the early non turbo 300zxs which also use the 10mm bolts.
R200 Limited-Slip Assy
38420-RS650 L/S Assy (10mm)
38420-RS660 L/S Assy (12mm)
R200 Ring & Pinion Sets (10mm)
For the 200SX/S12 Turbo up to 4/86.
R200 Ring & Pinion Sets (12mm)
For the 200SX/S12 Turbo (from 5/86) and all V6 models.
Info about the Z31 LSD
The R200 L/S assy is a 4 pinion unit with appromixmately 70ft/lb breakaway torque. Side gears are 30mm x 29t. The 300ZX/Z31 Turbo (from 4/87) is equipped with a factory installed LSD unit (38420-71S01*). The difference being only five (5) plates/discs per side (vs 6 in the NISMO LSD). Also, the limited edition SS model from (1/88) utilized a viscous type unit (38420-40F70*).
Here are the Nismo part numbers for the Z31 Look familiar?
38420-RS650 L/S Assy (10mm)
38420-RS660 L/S Assy (12mm)
Hope this clears up any confusion and this should probably be stickied for future reference.

The first I believe was the guy in California with the VG33E powered '87, which he fit a 300ZX Clutch LSD into. Then a guy from Florida a few weeks ago posted that he had fit a 240SX VLSD into his '87 SE. (Sorry, can't remember user names of these two). Now Jesse here has put the 240SX VLSD into his '88 Turbo. All MKII's.
Let's not forget that, although uber-expensive, the Quaife LSD made for the R200 fits both 10mm and 12mm R200's, and bolts right in with stock half shafts.
Stock drive shafts fit fine, it swaps stright into the stock diff housing, it came out of a 02/87 300zx so maby canada got them a bit earlier, and my car is a 88' so yes it is IRS. the only tools required were like 3 sockets, a torque wrench, and bench vise, so nice and simple, hope that answers your questions.

I suspect that since Canada is considered the snow capital of North America, nissan figured that we needed the LSD early. Just like the 240sx. All of the them which were built for Canada have VLSD in them. In the states it was an option.
Alex, What years do you think that Canadian models got them.

When I went to Canada looking for lsds only the hicas s13 cars had them. If you look at the diff from the drivers side you can see the orange viscous lsd sticker.
Hi! I'm from Sweden and I registered today. Did the clutch lsd in the Z31 make it to Sweden? Or are we stuck with the vlsd? Anyone got pictures?
Why guys doesn't take some photos of what you've done? For example in Subaru forums each mod or how-do come with photo...
more lsd options that may work for you guys, including a couple of possibles for the '84 ca20e solid axle cars: http://www.reiderracing.com/pgpowerbrute.htm
cant we just use the kaaz 2 way for a 240sx somehow...??
