I'm new to the forums and I'm not to sure if this is where this thread goes.

Anyways, my problem is with my tach. Sometimes I'll be driving and the tach will be reading the correct rpm and for no apparent reason or given interval the tach will jump to around 3200 rpms and stay in that position. When I turn the engine off when it is stuck, in this 3200 rpm position, the pointer falls the opposite direction towards the 8000 rpm side(to the right side of the guage) and stays at 5300 rpms instead of falling to the 0 rpm side (the left side of the guage). When I restart the vehicle sometimes it will go back to the 3200 rpm stuck position and stay there and somtimes it goes back to 0 rpms. This is a random occurence as to when my tach decides to do this.
I think my tach is possessed and I have no clue on how to circumcise this demon.
Hopefully, with all the knowledge in this forum I can remedy this problem.

Not sure, but my friend had the same problem in his 88 pulsar. It would hover around 5,000 on idle and show no rpm when driving or revving....tis wierd.

I had a problem similar to that when I first got my car. The problem was with the tach it self, and to remedy it I had to put in a ricerific one...

Easy fix.... Aftermarket tach... Not really cheap, but it may work. It might be the resistor thing that turns the needle. I would not really want to rip out the dash to figure that out though.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't really want to put in a aftermarket tach though, I wanted to keep the stock tach. I guess I'm gonna have to live with the possessed tach, until I find a new gauge cluster at the pick-n-pull. Hopefully I can find a used one and see if that fixes the problem.

9/10 200sx's have problems that can only be explained by possession.

That was exactly why I got aftermarket...

Removing the cluster is quite easy. I don't see the big issue with taking it out for either rapair or replacement.

my tach was off one day, i didnt realze it at first. i pulled out of my driveway went down the street a bit and gunned it as usual around one of my favorite right turns the same way i always do. as i was shifting to 2nd i glanced at my tach and just a bout had a heart attack when the needle sayed 7000 (keep in mind this is a verry high milage v6). turns out the tach was reading high for some reason, it stopped doing it a few minutes latter, butt not after i got some vids of me pegging the tach all the way to the right.

too bad the MPH wasnt pegging at 125+ at the same time...
