Alright....this happened about a month ago......and just happened again tonight......
Under full boost (10psi) and about 5000 rpms in 3rd and 4th gear, oil starts coming out the valve cover breather filter :wtf: and I mean COMING out, not blow by.....oil actually leaks out and pools enough where it runs down the head onto the exhaust mani and smells real nice.
Now a month ago I thought I had it figured out.....I thought it was the thin 5w30 oil, so I replaced it with 10w30. Well apparantly it's not the thickness of the oil.....what could it be?
This is also new with my brand new motor. Never happened with the old motor. Also I'm using the old valve cover so it shouldn't be the baffling in it...since it never did it before.
Any ideas? Anyone else ever have this happen?
Only thing I can think of is when I replace the oil, I always put 4 qrts in like the service manual says....and like I've done for the past 14 years, but I've noticed afterwards the level on the dipstick is a little past the "H"
Could this be the culpret? What else could it be?

hmmmmm, nobody's got any ideas what might be causing this, huh?

Sounds like your PCV filter under the Inlet Manifold is Fubar!. Without regular Oil changes they block up causing all sorts of problems ! The Only way to get to it is by removing the inlet manifold though !

change out your PCV valve under the intake manifold
its not easy at all to reach on the ca20e manifold, and i dont believe is very easy on the ca18 manifold either. The PCV valve is what lets pressure from the top 1/2 of the engine to be dispursed and released back into the oilpan oil. If its blocked, the head tries to squirt oil out the valve cover. Happens under high boost too cause soo much pressure builds that it squirts out. Go change it and im like 99% sure it should fix it.

It's pretty easy to change on the ca18......but shouldn't it be still good? I only have 2000 miles on the new motor, and everything is new including the PCV valve. I'm only running 10 psi of boost too, which is not very high. I'm sure there's other people here running higher boost than that with a breather filter, and don't have spewage problems like this.....
I'll pull the hose off the PCV valve and see if it's all gunked up and if the ball moves freely.

Any of you turbo guys that have valve cover breather filters ever have any oil coming out of the filter at WOT?
I've been reading online, and apparently it is very normal to get alot more blow-by with a forced induction engine than with a N/A motor.
I think and hope this my case.....since it doesn't do it all the time.....only at WOT, when the rpms are way up for long periods of time.
I think my best bet will be an oil catch can like one of these.

Yup blow by is common on all turbo motors. My SR blows oil out the BOV, i have a catch can on order tho.

My breather filter is kinda dirty but I'm running 13-14 psi and I most certainly don't have oil blowing out anywhere. I think my front oil seal on my turbo might be going cuase I have some oil in my I/C pipes but that's about it. That and going through a quart of oil every 2000 miles. Other than that seal i think it's all right

no oil out the breather. 10psi but i don't drive very much.

You sure that's blow by?! Sounds like a bad oil seal in the turbo to me. How would that much blow by get into the intake stream? This is exactly what killed my VG30DETT. Oil seal in the turbo went bad and blew oil into the intake stream. Oil doesn't like to compress like air, and I blew a ring in #6. I was also blowing oil out of the BOV. You might want to check into that.

Well......if he has the hose that connects the valve cover to the intake pipe instead of a breather filter.....I can see how he's getting oil coming out of his bov.
If I didn't have the breather filter and had the hose hooked up, I would imagine mine would be doing the same thing.
Like I mentioned earlier, mine doesn't do it all the time.....it was about a month between the 2 times it did it, and only at WOT with the rpms up close to redline for extended periods of time in 3rd and 4th gears.
Another thing I just thought of.....both times the oil came out of breather filter were both on the same stretch of hwy, which is up hill at a pretty steep incline....I wonder if the steepness had any play in it?
That and in conjunction with the oil level being past the "H" on the dip stick with 4 qrts of oil.......I wonder if I just have tooo much oil in there??

Yeah, too much oil will make it do that, so I'd start there. Just put three quarts in it, then fill it to about halfway on the dipstick, crank it up, and check it again, and just shoot for about halfway...

I don't know that doesn't sound right to me. It should be able to have it's full capacity of oil without blowing it all over the place. Espescially a new engine

Yeah, but he said it was past full...

Halfway between the "L" and "H"? But yeah....with 4 qrts of oil in there the level on the dipstick is about 3-4mm past the "H"......which seems kinda weird to me since 4 qrts is how much the owners manual says to put in when changing the oil filter.
I'll put less in it next round and see if takes care of it.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

Johnnyfivedate not saved · #17

that's how much I fill my oil up to (with 15w-40 mobil one) and i don't have this problem and I have 150,000 miles and 4 more psi of boost. :dontknow: I personally have no idea what could be cause his problem. But It is at least something he can try so you got me there

Keithdate not saved · #18

Yeah...I don't know. With my old motor, it had 245,000 when it died, and I always used 20w40 because it burned oil like crazy, but even then I didn't have any oil spewing out of the breather.
I'll try putting a little less oil in next time....and if that doesn't fix it, then i'll try a little thicker oil.....and go from there. Hopefully there's nothing wrong with the motor itself thats causing this.
