SCORE #1
Alright I need someone to talk some sense into me quick! Last night I bought a KA24DE for $50, guy told me it threw a rod through the block. I figured the head and intake and other crap would be worth $50, and maybe I'd get a good crank if I was lucky. Well, I got there, and he told me the motor was running, it was just knocking bad. So, that probably means a spun rod bearing and the block will be fine. I went and looked at the motor, and he not only gave me the complete motor (intake, exhaust, etc.), but the front accessories and pullies, and the FREAKIN TRANNY!!!!!
Good God what a score!!!! :headbang: :banger:
So someone quick give me some good reasons to keep on going with the CA20ET, cause I'm seriously thinking KA-T, which was my original plan anyway.
SCORE #2
Alright, time for #2. Was poking around ebay for SR20DE's, and found a Sentra for $1000 with a half finished motor swap. Not really interested, but after reading the description, he said he had the locked up SR20DE sitting in the driveway. Again, most likely a spun rod bearing (possibly main bearing, but not likely). I offered him $75, and he told me to come and get it!
I'm mainly wanting the SR just to tear it down and get real familiar with it's innerds since I've had several people ask me if I've rebuilt SR's before, and I actually haven't, so this will be a good chance to see this up close and personal. I know the block castings are different for the FWD and RWD SR's, but I know where there's a RWD intake, so some custom motor mounts and an SR bellhousing, and I'll have a SR ready to drop in another S12!
So WTF am I supposed to do? Now I've got 3 choices of motors to build, and only one car. I guess the thing to do would be to buy two more S12's. Then I could have a CA S12, an SR S12, and a KA S12. Too bad that'll never happen in this lifetime... :(
Two major scores for me!!!

The Ca is an awesome motor, but the KA is just that much better, and easier to turbo...I would go with the KA to turbo, but hey for 75 bucks there is nothing saying that you can't also buy the SR, take it apart, fix it, then sell it...gives experience, and money in your pocket after you sell it...
Yea, do the KA, plenty of go-fast goodied for cheaper on that motor. Plus I think the import performance GOD sells a turbo kit. I am, of course, referring to HKS. It will be expensive, but then again the decal on the side and the HUGE spooling hiss will make people back the hell off!
Hahaha... No high-$ HKS turbo kit for me, it'll be homemade. Already got a T3/T04 on the way. I'm most likely gonna do the KA, I just feel like I'm turning my back on my CA-engined bretheren...
Yeah, I'll probably build the KA for the S12, build the SR (if it's buildable) and put it for sale, and then I'll have a nice piece of eye-candy to put in the showroom. I'll keep the CA20 around and tinker with it for a while, and maybe if I find a turbo S12 later I'll swap that in, that way the electronics and everything will already be there...
You should build them all up and keep two as back-ups if one motor should ever kick the bucket :)

Now that sounds like the best plan...
KA turbo, cheap + large capacity + turbo = good.
go KA and document every step so i can follow ;)

yea man KA24DE that bad boy, its such an easy swap to do, hardest part about actually swapping, is prolly switching out the motor mounts lol
also FWD SR20= HARD but can do swap into RWD train....know a guy who did it b4, he will never ever do it again lol
KA24, mmm ....torquey.
You know, until I got on this forum I had no idea that the KA24 appeared with DOHC. Are there any KA24DE engines in Australia? I love my bottom end torque so it'd be great to get my hands on one.
Yeah that's all, go the big 2.4 and whack a supercharger on it. That's right, supercharger. You won't get the same power gains as with a turbo but you get lots of torque and you don't end up with lag and a massive hole in your power curve.
God bless boys

Yeah, I read your write up when I first got on the board since that was my original plan to begin with. Great write up! I'm sure I'll be using it a lot. And I'll also document my own trials and tribulations since I'm also gonna be going turbo.
I think I'll keep on going with the CA, but it's not gonna be a rush on it. I'd still like to build a bullet proof CA20 bottom end, but it'll come eventually.
The SR20 (if it's rebuildable) will be built and put on a stand in the showroom and put up for sale. Not sure if I should build it NA or turbo though since it's a FWD motor...
The U13 Bluebird SSS in oz had a KA24 which i imagine would have been a twin cam but i've never actually looked at one. That's front wheel drive tho. For the single overhead cam it was in the Navara and Terrano II but overall i don't think the KA24 was used alot in oz, even the Urvan and Nomad which are 2.4L are Z24s.
late u12 pintaras also had the ka24e the T, Ti and TRX models my g/f has one tourquey and as fun as a fwd 4 door can be :)
