I guess you can say god was watching over me today. Went to the Junk Yard Found a CA18ET motor. SO im gonna go pull it.
Questions::::::::
1)How hard is it to swap
2)Any major problems
3)If and after swap what can i remove to get rid of all the clutter

geoffdonkdate not saved · #2

Direct bolt on, might wanna get a different cluster for boost gauge, or just an after market one. shouldnt be hard at all.

I'd strip it of all electronics and wiring while you are at it. Also, for that in-cluster boost gauge to work, uyou have to get the MAP sensor labeled, "BOOST GAUGE".

well im not worried about the boost guage i already have a after market one. So to do teh swap all u need woudl be the harness and the ecu adn teh only thing the hharness goes to is the ecu right????

well kinda the ecu harness ties into the main harness so bring some cutters to cut open the wrap of the harness and untangle the mess.. also grap the gauge cluster like arro said the ca20e uses mechanical pickup for speed while the ca18 uses a electronic one

You mean speedometer or rpm? If you're keeping the CA20 tranny, that shouldn't make a difference on the speedo...

I'm gonna need to be finding these same things out since I'm swapping to a CA18 harness and ecu...

the pickup off the tranny is still the smae but on the ca18 the speedo cable goes into a box that translates the tranny rpm into a signal the cluster uses to show speed.. both applications use a picup off the intake coils for rpm signal

OK, so my question is then if I'm still using the CA20 tranny, I won't need the CA18 guage cluster, or will I? I was hoping to just splice in to the stock cluster so I don't have to mess with all that garbage...

you might be able to but im not sure.. it all depends on if you have the exact wiring diagram for both clusters...

you will NOT need anything
appart the turbo gauge which you have taken care of everything else is straight bolt on

I pulled the CA18ET out of my parts car about two weeks ago. The fastest way to do it is to drop the crossmember. I had the engine out by myself in less than 30 minutes. First remove the two big bolts holding the lower front control arms to the crossmember and while you're there, disconnect the steering rack from the hubs. Then there are three big 17mm bolts on each side of the member holding it to the S12's frame. Make sure you have a hunk of wood or a jack or something under the oil pan because the engine will be coming down, and coming down hard once those bolts come out. Then all you have to do is remove the 4 bolts on the transmission mount on and the whole thing will slide out from underneath the car. And plus if you have a buddy to help you, the ends of the crossmember make good lifting points to help you heave it into the back of a truck.

This is assuming you have removed all the wiring harness connections, clutch lines and fuel lines at the beginning. :)

If you have an analog gauge cluster, your CA18ET will have a standard mechanical speed pickup.

If this junkyard CA18ET has an analog gauge cluster, it will make the swap into a CA20E car much easier.

i know but the ca18et is in 2 parts(mech-elect) where as the ca20e are in one part(mech)

and did the turbo models ever come with a analog cluster i thought that all ca18et had the digital clusters

My turbo car has the analog cluster
