I have found out a sport transmission from a S11 using an engine L18E
The ID chart of the car was giving the transmission specs as a''FS5W63A HC38''
Is anybody familiar with this kind of transmission?
The places of the first and the second gears are on the opposite sides, like to have the first gear on you need to pull the shift lever down and to get the second gear you need to push it forward.

I would like to hear from you guys, if you know any info's about this kind of transmission.
Is it worth to get it comparible to our MKI's manual transmission?

Thanks,

alp

This is the first I have heard of this tranny. Interesting. What are the gear ratios.

hydafsdate not saved · #3

yes, this is new to me too.
I'm still searching the gear ratio's of this transmission.
I want to compare the gear ratio's with MKI's transmission.
As I have mentioned this is from an S110 which has L18E engine on it.

If anyone knows any info's on this transmission and better if able to compare
with our MKI's transmission gear ratio this will be great help to go.

thanks,

Related to my question, so far I found this info's below which surprised me.
I was not aware about a factory competition transmissions exist, during 77-83
built for S110's.

So, anybody has the knowledge about what is the gear ratios of MK I's ?
I want to performe a comparison inbetween them.

So the info's is below;

''Factory Competition Transmissions 77 - 83
There were Factory Competition 5-Speeds available through NISSAN Competiton Dept. There were two overdrive Transmissions, and four with the direct drive (1:1 in fifth gear)

#1 #2 #3 #4 #5

32010-N3130 2.906 1.902 1.308 1.000 0.864 (close ratio)

32010-N3030 3.321 2.077 1.308 1.000 0.864 (wide ratio)

32010-N3220 2.818 1.973 1.470 1.192 1.000

32010-N3221 2.348 1.601 1.296 1.138 1.000

32010-N3222 2.192 1.601 1.470 1.138 1.000

32010_N3201 3.321 2.270 1.601 1.240 1.000 (rally transmissions)

Notes: The overdrive (FS5C71B) and direct drive (F5C71B) transmissions utilize the Servo-type (steel) snycro mechanism. For a complete parts breakdown of the listed overdrive and direct drive transmissions see the Nissan Motorsports Schematic catalog (99996-M8015). The shift kit (99996-E3030) is required when installing any of the listed transmissions into 240Z's built up to 8/71. ''

Here I got even some more info's about this ''FS5W63A'' transmission;

''63 series trans: large trans commonly used with L-series engines, a version was also fitted to A-series engines in B210s. The 5-speed version is a "dogleg" shifter

Shift Patterns

There are "dogleg" shift-pattern (aka 'reverse shift') trannies and standard shift pattern ones. The doglegs are pre-1980.

Dogleg:

R- 2- 4
1- 3- 5

Why a dogleg pattern? In racing, 1st isn't used much, but the 4-5 shift needs to be quick.

FS5W60L is overdrive dogleg model

FS5W63A is overdrive dogleg model

Standard pattern (aka 'straight shift')

1- 3- 5
2- 4- R

This pattern is better for city traffic, where the 1-2 shift is used repeatedly.

How Strong are they?

Gearboxes are rated for torque (twisting force). Peak Horsepower is not a factor. It doesn't matter how much horsepower you have; whether you need a stronger transmission depends on how much torque the engine puts out.

63-series 5-speed
The 63 transmission probably came in various stock ratios. It was not used by Nissan Competition for racing. Instead the 56-series was recommended for the small cars, and the 71 for the larger cars.

The 1977-1978 USA got B210s with factory 5-speed transmissions. Here's an advertisement for one:

MPG Champion - Datsun B210
This is the FS5W63A "dogleg" trans. Note the casting line around the center section on the otherwise smooth housing.

Hi,

anybody can compare this dogleg transmission gear ratio with 1985 MKI's 5 speed manual transmission gear ratio?
will it worth to change over?

I havent heard of a dogbox being used in anything over here since the old RWD 70s rally cars.

hydafsdate not saved · #8

as I don't have any experiance with the dogleg transmission I can't decide about the exchange inbetween.
I also don't know about the gear ratio of 1985 MKI transmission to make a comparison.
If anybody knows the specs and able to compare with this dogleg gear ratio
It will be very usefull information for my decision to change.

What I know so far with this dogleg is the steel gears in it, overdrive and the advantage to switch inbetween 4-5th gears and able to handle more torque,
on the other hand it seems not so clevar to have the dogleg due to switching difficulties inbetween 1-2 for the drag purposes?

R 2 4
1 3 5

any idea?

thanks,

1985 MK1 gear ratios for the CA18ET are as follows

1st: 3.592
2nd: 2.057
3rd: 1.361
4th: 1.000
5th: .813
Rev: 3.657

These ratios are very similiar to the dogbox however 5th gear is longer on the stock S12 box and I wouldn't recommend a shorter 5th gear ratio with the 4.11:1 final drive as 5th gear is pretty short as is. Unless you are solely rally racing I don't see an advantage there. The good thing about the dogbox is the steel synchros I believe they are brass in the stock S12 71b box. Hope that helps.

Hey Alan,

Thank you very much for your information which was very helpfull to me.
So after comparing the gear ratio I don't see there any advantage too.You saved my time and some cash too.

Thanks again,

Yes, but we're talking four hundredths of a difference between the two. The stock transmission will put you at 2730 rpm @ 60mph. The dogleg box will put you at 2867 rpm @ 60mph. So 100rpm. Meh...

Hey, I just noticed, in your first post you said the specs were "'FS5W63A HC38''.
That means that car came with a H190 solid rear end with a 3.8:1 gear ratio. I'm not sure if your car is solid axle or IRS? If it's solid axle, you could change out the rear end gears along with the transmission and actually get better gas mileage on the highway, even with the lower 5th gear in the dogleg transmission.

thanks for your attention, my car has IRS and 4.11 final gear ratio.
but you are right the car which has the dogleg has solid rear end with 3.8:1
however I don't know what could be the result with ''dogleg+4.11'' final gear
maybe to short 5th gear.
but can my acceleration might be any better?
with my current stock MK I transmission I can perform 1th gear 60km and 2th
110-120 around 6.000 rpm shore.
So I don't need to shift to 3th gear for 0-60 miles acceleration.
will this dogleg makes this result any better?

i've owned two p610's sss coupes with the L18 dogleg gearbox, and just be aware that they dont have a reverse lockout like the straight boxes.
i.e. straight box you cant go from 5th to reverse without going to neutral beforehand, the dogleg you can go from 1st to reverse if you push the stick hard enough.

Hey, thanks thats really weird, so this means you have always a possibility
to switch from 1sth while you are about 6000 rpm then suddenly you might find your self on the reverse instead of 2nd gear!!!

really did you get a similar experiance or at least is this possible?
also is it worth to change? can you notice any quick acceleration?

thanks,
