sorry sorry...flame me...I couldn't find the info...sorry guys...
I was offered a ca18et manifold, turbo, downpipe, and boost controller for $130CDN. was wondering if I should go the ca20et route.
and if so..what else will I need to get a ca20et running properly. can I use the stock ca20e rods and pistons under 5pis for now until I can afford forged ones?
mainly I'm looking for a list of what I need to get to complete the swap. YellowPreludeR...Joel07....I'm looking in your directions for some info...
if this job is pretty straightforward and I can get it done for not too much $$ then I may do it.
ca20et

okay, I found out that I also need a ca18et maf, ECU and wiring harness..or a safc(which I may get..found a cheap one). then I can run whatever MAF I want to :D.
also, will the ca18et turbo manifold bolt right up to the ca20e? ...from my understanding and the searches I did...a turbo manifold is basically the exhaust manifold that can have a turbo manifold bolted onto it. correct?

The turbo mani will bolt to the CA20 no problem...8)
DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!!!!!!
Yeah, looks like you've pretty much got down what you need. Turbo manifold, turbo, downpipe, turbo harness and stuff.
Now, if you're running a low boost setup, you can probably get by without a SAFC. And I wouldn't turn up the boost too much with the stock rods. Go ahead and build another one and have it ready, then turn the stocker up till it blows, that way we'll all know how much the CA20 bottom end will take...
Also you have to think about the manifold. If you're gonna go intercooled (which I would DEFINETLY recommend with the CA20's higher compression), then keep the CA20 intake. If you want simplicity, get the CA18ET manifold and pipes. But I would definetly recommend getting one of Bart's intercoolers and doing it that way.
Oh, and once I figure out how I'm gonna do my forged rods and pistons, I might make a couple kits for other people who want a bullet proof CA20 bottom end, but go ahead and get everything set up on the stocker, then all you have to do is build the bottom end, put on a bigger turbo, and you've got all the hp you'll need... :evillaug:
the plan is to save up $3000 so I can choose between ca20eti(a proper build up) and a ca18det swap.
If you're willing to do some of the work yourself, it won't cost anywhere near $3k to do the CA20ET. I'd love a CA18DET too, but in my opinion, I can have a brand new rebuilt CA20 making more HP and TQ than the CA18 for a lot less money. I probably won't have $3k in my entire car... LOL
I know the JDM motors are low mileage, but I've seen a few that weren't maintained and popped soon after the swap. But, I'm a machinist, and that's the way I think. I just can't see going through all that work just to put a junkyard motor in.
The CA18DET does look cooler, but be different and build up the CA20!!!
I'm keeping a list of all the expenses for my project, and when I finish, I'll post them up. I'm going to add on all the expenses for machining too, just so you can see it (even though I'm doing all the machining myself). My goal is to have the entire car built up for less than $4K (including paint and body work and everything) and running 12's...

i agree with you mostly but the ca18det is 175hp out the box.. add a nice fmic and up the boost to 15psi or so and you will be at 200-220hp... ca20et would take a bit more to get it to the same level.. and cost more then the ca18det...
and cost more then the ca18det...
Alright, I agree that it'll take more to get it there, but I still don't think it'll cost more. We'll find out when I finish mine up... :evillaug:
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a CA18DET, I just can't ever bring myself to pay $2000-$3000 for what is basically a junkyard motor...
Allright im trying to decide whether to supercharge my ca20e keeping in mind i can source a ca18det for $1000 with everything.
1) will a ca20e internals handle 5psi?
2) what power are we looking at with 5 psi roughly?
3) at what boost did yellows ca20e come unstuck originally?
4) are stock afm maxes out at 5psi (apparently) does this mean our stock ecu can deal with 5psi without detonation?
I don't think that yellow's motor ever came apart, he tore it down to do some more work (bigger turbo :evillaug: ) I thought... But didn't Arro blow up a CA20ET?
As far as power levels, I'm not sure on that one, but I think if you keep the setup on the rich side and have a head gasket in good shape, it'll handle 5 psi pretty easily as long as it's kept out of detonation. But that's the case with any motor really...
If you're talking about the stock CA20 MAF, I wouldn't even think about using it. I'd get the CA18ET ecu and harness if I was doing any major modifications to the CA20, boosted or not...
nah would be using the maf and ecu off a u12 pintara/stanza then maybe upgrading the injectors slightly
Yellow popped a headgasket the first time around @ 10PSI. But I think there were a lot of other issues that helped kill it.
His second motor survived a fire. Fuel line split I think ...
And Joel I agree with you wholeheartedly. I'm used to junkyard motors being a "gotta get this thing running, here's $50" kind of solution.
We should by the springtime have some decent SOHC buildups to wage war with the DOHC guys.
Too bad it seems only 2 guys in Australia live close enough together to actually go one on one ... *lol*
I like drag racing, but I'd rather some kind of track comparison, and getting a few of these cars together on the same track could be hard.
.
1) will a ca20e internals handle 5psi??
yes but most the motors out there are tired. so a rebuild would be the best step to ensure longevity
2) what power are we looking at with 5 psi roughly??
140-160
3) at what boost did yellows ca20e come unstuck originally?
cant remember that but i think he hit 10psi.. but remember this was a old and tired engine
4) are stock afm maxes out at 5psi (apparently) does this mean our stock ecu can deal with 5psi without detonation?
are u talking about the ca203 afm cause from what i know the ecu isnt programmed to handle any postive pressure
I But didn't Arro blow up a CA20ET?
...
not really he got the car and almost right after that the head gasket blew... more then likely it was old and tired

Yah the Ontario S12's don't tend to have a lot of luck...:|
thanks bart just heared from the people on the u12 pintara sight that they max out 5psi
