Yeah, are these things worth it at all?

if you've never seen them, here...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=46098&item=7930145592&rd=1
theres a billion right now on ebay!

Yes, crank scrapers work. They help to reduce windage which cuts down on parasitic loss. The best option would be a full windage tray though.

A crank scraper would be a good investment if you have the engine apart, but its not worth the work involved otherwise.

..more specifically, what kind of gains could be expected if a crank scraper were installed? Smooter rpms? Higher/lower rpms? better hp and Tq numbers? reason is that once i do rebuild my v6 i want it to be the best it can be..no exceptions!

Maybe 2-3 hp. It will be a gain, but not a huge one, but yeah they do work. Most Hondas and some Toyotas come with windage trays from the factory, haven't seen any Nissans yet with em though...

It's not really a "static" gain.

I've seen BB Mopars make 30hp with a Milodon windage tray.

But you have to read a lot deeper than that. That 30hp was on a 605 hp motor. Who in their right mind built one without a windage tray (hmm ... maybe Milodon) is beyond me.

But a 600hp motor is spinning violently. A violent motor will cause more splash, and therefore suffer more parasitic loss from oil hitting the crank.

So will it make 30hp on your VG? Not likely.

Where will you notice the difference? Well, you might not at all.

A windage tray is just smart. You MIGHT be losing power to oil slinging up onto your crank. Short of fiber optic cameras to check, your only option is to put one in as insurance.

There's also good windage tray designs, and bad. If it's made by a company like Milodon, or anyone else you know that deals with crankcase products, it's probably a good piece.

In the SB mopar buildup we're doing for a customer, his windage tray was over $200 with the ARP fasteners, and is a Milodon piece. Ok granted most of that price was the ARP fasteners (go figure) but you get my drift.

this is the Milodon piece

None of the ebay pics work, but if they have a CA application, I'd be interested.

They give listings for the L series, and the VG, but I haven't come accross anything for either CA...

but remember we dont have il squirters on the ca18et and personally i want as much oil getting splashed on the bottoms of the pistons as possible to aid in cooling

Hmmmm... Good point, but don't CA's have oil squirters built into the rods? I know my CA20 rods do...

Spooleddate not saved · #9

Those aren't oil squirters. Those are just oil passages to bring oil to the rod bearings and wrist pins.

Joel07date not saved · #10

nooooo.... It's a squirter, I'll get some pics in a couple minutes... Might not be enough for a turbo application though.

Rod bearings get oiled through the crankshaft, then it's got a squirter (which does oil the wristpin), but there's no internal oil passages inside a rod...

they are a very primitive and not very effective oil squirters.. basically if you have a tured engine then those probably barely squirt anything
