Hi wonder if someone here has come across this before. My car smokes badly but only when the exhaust is connected at the manifold. If i run the engine with no exhaust the smoke stops. So far i have replaced:-

Piston rings
Valve guides and seals
Turbo (re-built T25)
Bearings

Only explanation i can think of is the back pressure is blowing the seal on the turbo or valve guides. Appreciate any suggestions

was your previous turbo blown? could be oil in the exhaust?

The engine was blowing out smoke before but not as bad as it is now. Thought it was the turbo. I disconnected the pipe at the middle section and it was blowing smoke out there. Also heated the box with a gas torch incase there was any oil there so i don't think it can be oil in the pipes.

what colour is the smoke?? It could be the O2 sensor...

The smoke is heavy and white/grey in colour and smells like burning oil. No O2 sensor fitted i have a uk spec car.

hmm smells like coolant.. it could be that when the exhaust is off the water vapor doesnt condense like it would with the exhasut on so maybe thats why it only shows up when the exhasut is on
