I saw a post from Bartco saying that hes building a intercooler for a 200sx, i believe he was talking about the turbo models, 4 cyls, i know this seems dumb, but im not too knowledgeable about this kinda stuff, can you put an intercooler on a non turbo car, and would it effect performance, also if you can put one on a non turbo car is there one for the 88 200SX SE?? 6Cyl

It wouldn't really help a naturally aspirated motor. The reason the turbo and supercharged guys run intercoolers is because by compressing the incoming air, you also heat it, and the colder the air is, the more dense, and the more power you're gonna make. Add in the fact that the turbos are powered off of the hot exhaust, and you make for some pretty hot air with no intercooler. The hot air will also increase the possibility for detonation.

But no, it won't buy you anything for an N/A motor...

ya it will... throtle lag....and some power loss since youd be sucking in air thru a resistor

I know you can fit a spearco with a 10x28x3" in fromt of the radiator.

true but you can also fit a 24X10X3.5 in trhe front air damn and get much better cooling cause with a fmic right in front of the rad you will get heat soak every time you come to a stop...

I have read of research where an intercooler is being used in a non-boosted engine. The IC is supercooled and the intake charge is 'boosted' through being super dense. The system uses a AC type recovery system for the cooling fluid.

And a IC in front of a radiator would mean running the fans so that cool air is always being drawn across both the rad and the IC. It would not heat soak.

that only if you u are using the stock fan powered off the pulleys.. with a electric you would have to wire it to run all the time otherwise install a thermo switch to go on and off and then you would still heatsoak...

How would you heat soak if the IC is not pulling in heated compressed air? We're talking about basically cooling charge air via an A/C type system. There really wouldn't be any heat associated.

well if the ic is sitting in front of the rad and the thermo switch hasnt turned the fans on yet you are heat soaking the ic from the rad unless you put a 2inch gap between the 2

I see. Well, just make sure you're constantly moving. LOL

A non-boosted IC is naturally self cooling due to the induction air running through it. It cools from the inside. This applies to turbo cars that are not producing boost also. The heat-soak from the pressurized boost heating up the IC is scrubbed by both the air moving outside the IC (either the forward motion of the car or fans) and the interior rush of intake air inside the IC.

Any IC should have fans drawing air so that the radiator does not radiate heat towards it under any condition but start up. I have seen underhood ICs in T birds and other cars and its just absurd. So are 'water-cooled' ICs that use the 180 degree engine coolant as a 'coolant'. Why not just get an auxiliary small rad and have a dedicated 12 v pump service the water cooled IC?

The 'AC' type IC is sort of a water-cooled IC that has R134 blasted through the 'water' channels.

In fact, why not do this to a turbo car also? I see all types of exterior sprayer systems but this would actually be much better.
