I'm figuring somebody like Nebberma ...Nebuca-baboober ...Nebucazginsta ...etc. will probably be one of the guys to answer this. I live in ACT and drive an S12 coupe (in the same blue finish). I'm actually thinking of getting a hatch and working it because I have a CA18DE sitting around and etc. etc. that's not important. What is important is I want an LSD and I won't be running a whole lot of power (at least not yet) so what should I do? Where should I get it? I'll be putting in an S13 trannie that I'm sick of having to walk around so I'll be modding the drivetrain anyway.
Bear in mind I'm a cheap bastard and I'm not looking to break the bank on this whole thing. I want it to be safe and registerable but the principle idea is to end up with a better drifter than what I have now.
So LSD me.
Thanks and God bless,
fraz

i'm not nebs but i can help.

you from the ACT huh?? i'm from the Sthn H'lands (just past goulburn).

it depends what rear end you have. if it's and IRS, you can use a long nose R200 from a Z31 300ZX turbo. not 100% sure if you can use any old aftermarket center in the long nose diff though.

if it's a H190 live axle rear, then you're in the same boat as me.

OS Giken doesn't make anything, niether does KAAZ. there is a slim chance Nismo still makes them.

you could also try finding a factory LSD for it. TRX Blueys had them as an option, but these are very rare. there are some nissan 4WDs that have LSD H190s in them too. just make sure it's a 10-bolt.

hope this info helps.

Nismo havnt made LSD's for H190's for about 3-5years :disgust: and the nissan 4wds (pathfinder) have H230's but i think they can be used with your gearset (Im still looking into this) Im converting my car to IRS so i can have an LSD, but untill the conversion is done i have a CIG locker to go in for drift days

i have seen some 4WD H190 LSDs for sale at 4WD wreckers.

i have an importer who's supposed to ring me back regarding a Nismo LSD. whether he has access to new one or a 2nd hand is anyones guess. i'll just have to wait and find out.

Thanks guys,
Yeah I have also heard that the LSD from a 720 ute slots right in without too much in the way of mods.
As for IRS, that's definitely part of the plan. The car I have now doesn't have it but I'm planning to start with a different car, I want to do up a hatch rather than my coupe and I'll be looking for one with IRS.
So the R200 is from the Z31, the turbo? I'd imagine that would have to handle a reasonable amount of torque ..could be the go.
I know this is extremely general but what are the big things I need to look out for and remember while doing this whole project? I'll be putting in an S13 CA18DE and trans, what are everyone's recommendations for brakes? ECU? Extractors? You guys appear to have a fair bit more experience with S12s than me so just throw your ideas around. Bear in mind this is for a daily driver (so I don't want trouble with engineer's cert) but weekend drifter. It won't be a turbo.
Another thing, the engine has been sitting around for a couple of years without being rotated. I'm figuring seals and stuff will be needing to be replaced and all sorts of crap so that I don't shatter anything when I fire it up. Can anyone outline this for me?
God bless boys,
fraz

My current suspension and brake setup is as follows: S13 front hubs with 280mm disc's from an R32 with R33 4spot calipers, i have S13 coilovers in the front aswell. in the rear i have the std drum's at the moment (will be disc's when i do the IRS swap) and i have very lower custom springs and gabrial shocks, when i do the IRS swap i will be useing custom Z31 rear springs and bilisten shocks,+ an R200 longnoise LSD from an R31 (jap spec)with Z31 rear axles (so basicly the same setup as Neb) also some of the old 720 utes had H190 LSD's but good luck finding one, i have been looking for about 6months. the later 720 utes had R200 solid axle diffs so they are no good for the std solid gazelle rear end

I hope this helps abit

Fly PSI,
Dude that is perfect thanks very much. The diff is really the one bit that had me a tad stumped. Getting the R31 R200 with the Z31 axles, would you recommend I went to regular nissan wreckers or talk to import dealers? I would assume (as you're planning to do the mod yourself) that you already have an idea of how much it's going to cost, average figure?
I knew S13 and S12 had the same stud pattern but - if you're using S13 hubs - does that mean they have the exact same offset as well? If that's the case I know a wreckers in Queanbo (just outside Canberra) who gets stacks of S13 wheels so maybe I could round up some 16s ...then again the stockies probably can't take very wide tyres.
The suspension's probably the one thing I'd leave to the shop because Inline Suspension is nearby and those guys rock the casbah. Decked out my current S12 with KYB Shocks and King Springs with all new bushes and ball joints for $1500 supplied and fitted. Handles like on rails and that's the non-IRS model.
Then again I am a cheap bastard, maybe I'll save a few bucks and do it in the backyard :p
Any more info and suggestions for drivetrain that anyone has would be welcomed.
Thanks heaps,
.fraz.

the IRS isnt costing me much as im getting a whole car this weekend. the LSD and rear axles will cost no more then $1k, I currently have 16x7's on the front and 16x8's on the rear of my car and they are +37 offset (soon to be 17x7's and 17x8's with the same offset), but i think if i didnt have coilovers on the front they wouldnt fit. the rims came off a 180sx so with the front suspension mod rims from S13's fit well, Neb also has 16in Volk's from an S13 on his car.

The CA18 is a straight boltin so long as you use a CA18 flywheel, you can use the CA20 gearbox no worries, (my spare gazu has a CA18DET sitting in it now) so all you will need for the conversion is the engine, loom, ECU and flywheel. from the gearbox back you can just use you std gazu driveline you can also use your current radiator as the outlets are on the right sides.

BTW with my brake setup i have an S14 master cylinder.

Awesome, more useful information, thanks bro.
As for the gearbox, I will use the S13 one (it's sitting around and I'm sick of looking at it) ...it's got a quickshift kit or something and it does feel really nice. Having said that, I'd really like to start a fresh on a hatchy (I drive a coupe) and - when I buy it - I may find it has a perfectly good trannie in it already.
If I use the CA18 trannie I'm going to need to screw with the rest of the drivetrain huh? It should be worth it though, it's a nice box.
I've actually been talking to a dude about getting a full car with the IRS as well but he's already got some other fellas looking at it and I think I might miss out. I am planning to start with a whole different car and I'll certainly try to get one with IRS.
Hey let me know if you hear of anybody on this forum (or another forum or whatever) selling a hatch with straight panels, good interior (pref. blue int) and the IRS or just tell them to contact me. ( [email removed] ) I want to spend as little money on it as possible so I'm not looking for one with an engine or a trannie, they would only take up more sodding space in my garage anyway!!!
I'd be replacing the:
-motor
-trannie
-diff
-clutch
-brakes
-suspension
so as long as the body is good the mech condition doesn't matter a whole lot.

CA is a CA.

The s13 tranny (unless by some strange Oz thing) is the same as the Gazelle. Same family, different generation.

The Gaz one is an FSw57"B" and the S13 is a FSw57"C"

I don't think Australia got the MKII 200sx ( 87-88 ) ... but those cars came standard with the same S13 (C) transmission. It feels nicer because the "B" transmission is externally shifted - it has a linkeage. The "C" is a top loader, it uses the ball and socket style shifter - no external moving parts.

I've driven Gaz/200 with both, and I prefer the later C. It feels more like a modern japanese car. The B is fun, kinda makes me feel like rallying, but fast shifting is kinda out the window.

FLYPSI - keep me updated on the H230 business. I can likely get a cheap ($ not quality) LSD for it. I know I can get the H230 LSD, I just don't know if the tadpole can use it. If I order one in, I can't return it :( Special order.

gerrybgdate not saved · #11

Yeah we did get the mkII Gaz's but they are few and far between, I have one for parts down in my bottom paddock near my shed, its (was) an auto and I suspect a lot of them here were. Because we only got the ca20 cars here new, they didn't sell well, and by the time they got to mkII's they didn't bother sending many here.
The 'B' trannies are frankly shit compared to the 'C' ones, to be honest. C is a much better more robust box and will take the punishment from a car with 270rwhp+ plus like my sr, (not standard). The 'b' won't last a few weeks being punished like that. But in saying that if your not going to run bags of power and your 'b' box is in good nick, it saves a lot of hassle with using the s13 type 'C' box: 1. don't need to cut the transmission hole back, 2. Don't need to shorten the tailshaft, 3. Don't need to modify/ make a custom g/box mount etc..

Nebuchernezzerdate not saved · #12

I'm swapping the blown C box in my bluebird to a B just cos i have a spare laying about, i'll see how it goes, weather it blows up to or what.

salps12date not saved · #13

Sounds like a competition.. Who can blow the B box the quickest! :guitar: :)

gerrybgdate not saved · #14

Hey Neb and Salps, if you do do your 'b' type boxes in, I reckon the 'C' type box out of a Z31 300zx would fit, if you swapped your old 'b' front section on to it. I haven't checked, but I suspect that they may be a shorter lenght 'C' box like the later Gaz's had. Then you wouldn't need to cut transmission tunnel holes etc.

Gerry-i'll keep that in mind :)
Sheppo-welded diff is one of the first mods to the doribird :)
