Aaaah ****. so i'm leaking gas everywhere now and i don't know what to do. it may be comming from the connection of the hose to the tank, or possibly from the seem (have yet to determine that), but if it is the tank, and its too much to repair, i'm gonna need another. What i'm wondering is what will fit other than an S12 200sx one? prefferably something off a newer model car so it's not such an old tank, but whatever, hit me with info, i'm pretty certain i can't be the only one to have had this issue.
edit: just out of curiosity, how many times would i have to bend over in the nissan dealership for a brand new one?
Gas Tank!

Go with a 10 gal fuel cell. :)
out of a? i'm not getting a custom one made.
they're something you can purchase ;)
LOL Fuel cells are made in standard designs and standard volumes. They are universal. You would need to custom mount it into you car. Fuel Safe is one of the major manufacturers of fuel cells. If I were in your boat, I would definitely go with a fuel cell. A good fuel cell will get rid of the problem where the motor runs out of fuel when you're down to 1/8 - 1/4 tank and going through a hard corner. This is because a fuel cell doesn't allow the fuel to slosh. Anyway, if you don't go with a fuel cell, I doubt any other gas tank will fit snug with the stock mounts. You'll have to find one out of an S12.
have you done any work recently replaced fuel pump or something it may be the gasket around the hole where the pump goes in. on my 240 this was the case when i bought it the gas tank leaked when you filled it up. i would check that before i looked for anouther tank. the prob with fuel cells are they have to be mounted and need a inline fuel pump. a used tank from juck yard is good most of time they come withextra pumps and sending units that work for your gage(try finding one that does in a fuel cell) and it is cheaper
fuel cell $100
inline high presser pump $150
custom mount for fuel cell ???
fuel gage that works = priceless
i just put a tank on my s-12 you can have my old one it dont leak but it is full of rust i got one from u-pullit yard for $25 pump and sending unit both good. the trick is to get one that has been sitting for 5 years or less and as always check for rust before you take it off (I learned this the the hard way) :wall:
What's a fuel cell worth/pump? someone link me to a site (i realize you posted 250)?
i think i'll just repair what i have. the metal line on top of the thing i think is what's leaking. my plan is to spray the line down with something that wont be eaten by gas, spray more of it, and more of it, and more, then cover it all with this ashfault spray shit i have... a lot of it.
i'm just wondering what i should spray initially, any ideas? i was thinking a spray fiberglass or something???
and if someone could post a shematic for the top of the tank that'd be great. 2 wires have somehow gotten disconnected from the fuel pump and i dont know where they're to go...
Geoff if the metal line where it goes into the tank is bad then you really should replace the sender. You don't need the entire tank. The problem here is the only place to get your hands on a new one is the dealer. The yards are a crap shoot at best to find one that's not orignal. I have replace two on the 2 s-12s I have owned and it's not that hard. Especially because you have the tank out allready.
I'd be willing to be that if you haven't had wiring problems with the fuel pump, you will soon because if the fuel line is rotted, those insulators are not far behind.
k i'm talking the metal line that goes all over around the tank, and yes eventually into it. it's connected to the orange hose, but that orange hose isn't rotted at all... the fuel pump i'll re-solder up because a couple of wires are off and i'll just need a pic of how its set up (please someone post).
as far as replacing the sending unit, i cant see it being easy as that metal line is welded to the tank on brakets, no? show me a pic of the sending unit so i know it this is it for sure, and i'm wondering, what was it worth from nissan?
the sending unit is the whole mechanism that drops into the tank. it sounds like if you replace this it should fix your problem.
Yeah, it's not the sending unit, allow me to upload a drawing since no one wanted to scan from the service manual :(.

there - in that picture the sending unit is the circle with the 2 grey tubes comming off it and the electrical harness, the part that's leaking is the line i've colored red. i believe it's copper.
if it's just a hole in the line and you know where the leak is, you can take it to a shop and they can bend up a new line and replace it for you. it really shouldn't be too much. if you have a tube bender, you could even do it yourself.
there are other 'jury rig' fixes but i wouldn't recommend them unless you were stranded by the side of the road. too much risk of fire.
the whole tube is rotten to ****... plus it's welded to the gas tank and all kinds of shizzle. i suppose i could get the whole thing rebent or whatever...
I'd be willing to bet that's a return line or a vent of some sort.
Here is a pick from the FSM of the tank.
oh shiiit thanks so much, can you blow that up by chance?
my book calls the line a vent tube it should not have fuel in it but i dont know for sure if you have the tank out already can you just cut the bad spot out and replace with rubber line and clamps?
What are you wanting for the wires you just want to know what color wire goes where? Ill look at my old tank tonight and try to post it tomarrow.
yeah i'd like to know which goes where. it's listed as a vent? Cause when i unclamped it from the car, gas ran out of it...
I can't save an attachment any larger than that.
If you look at that pic closely you will see a gas check valve on the vent line. The vent line goes to the charcoal canister. The other two lines are the gas feed line and the return. Those go to the top of the sending unit.
Yes, that tube goes to your charcoal canister in the engine bay.
I removed most of that line from the fueltank and plugged it right after that valve, The line was badley rusted and I had removed the charcoal canister anyway.
so you think i can bypass all the extra line and jsut go from the valve to the tank with some rubber hose say , and no issue?
http://www3.telus.net/golda87/car/help/gastankbp.JPG
what i mean is, would it be ok to run a new line (what i've done in blue) and cut away all the stuff i've done in green? could you diagram what you did zector? i'd like to unhderstand, cause mines ****ed too.
edit: and if it's a vent line could it be a cause of leaking gas anyways? i'm not leaking significant ammounts, but i'd go into the garage in the morning and it'd smell like it.
Geoff, if it turns out your gas tank is toast, just make a trip down to Regina. You can have this one I have sitting here.
decent shape with pump for free??
so tempting, yet quite a trip... hmm... then again the esks are playing there sunday ...
I think this is what you want clockwize from fuel suply line
White with purple stripe
black
yellow with blue stripe
yellow
thanks man but a picture may be necessary, i dont even know where they solder to...
nothing like rubber hose and jb weld ;)
So i fix the tank, drop her back in, and now i don't know how much gas i have, the meter reads less than empty, lol. Any tips?
edit: just out of curiosity, how many times would i have to bend over in the nissan dealership for a brand new one?
Just once, but bring lots o petro. jelly (ie vasoline), cause every one gets in on it...Dealership is nice, cause its authentic parts...but its WAY TOOO much...
