i just got another s12 but without any papers so i cant make road legal :-x
so mi was going to use it as a race car at a local dirt track as all they run now is 4cyl mustungs and i kno a ca20 would be a faster motor than the ford 2.5L but the car needs to be carberated grrr.... it really sux, b/c i have tried to do some reasearch on this but can't find anything, i would love to spank these domestic racers but i cant if i cant make through tech inspection!
thanx guyz
did nissan ever use carbs on any s12?
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Mar 2005" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
The CA20S is carb'd, but I'm not sure if it would be too great for racing. Now as far as the CA20 spanking the 2.3L mustangs (if they're running 2.5's, then you're in big trouble), that depends on the rules. Are they actually all stock, or are they modified motors with Holley carbs? I have quite a bit of experience with Modified 4 Cylinder racing, and the 2.3L Fords are no joke when modified. The parts are plentiful, and most of the time they're running 12:1 compression and .500-.600" lift roller camshafts.
Now, I think that the chassis of the S12 is a much better chassis than the Mustangs, but in a modified class, it's just way too far down on HP. I raced an S12 for two years in an actual PURE STOCK class, where EVERYTHING in the motor had to be stock (which some people took just as a suggestion  ), and the class was dominated by S13's, but I ran right there in the top five most races, and won one race. (would've won another if the RF hub didn't break... :-x )
Do you have a link to the website of the track you're thinking about running? I'd like to see what you'd be up against.
Oh, and if the tech inspectors don't know much about Nissans, just get a KA24E and drop in there with some Weber side drafts, that's carb'd!!

What you could do is take the carb'd manifold and make an adapter to put a Holley 2 barrell on it. That's what I'd do...
no no s12's ever had a carb'd setup
Those 2.3s have a pretty stout after market.
After the Tadpoles consistent injectors work/don't work ... all those 2bbl Holleys we've been ripping off cars for years are starting to look good.
I never ever thought I'd look at a 2bbl carb as an upgrade *lol*
Either or, I might try my hand at making a carby manifold, should be pretty easy, as long as you make sure the fuel delivery is equal to each cylinder. Way easier than making a turbo header, as I can use aluminum, and I already have a bunch of prebent aluminum pipes.
I figure by turning the carb 90º even a small 4bbl could be used, as long as you made a plenum. Beauty thing with carbs is the tunability ... if the 4 bbl is too much, just keep putting stiffer and stiffer springs in it until it's only cracking the secondaries up high.
With the primaries farthest away, you'd get a pretty decent fuel dispersion, and there's tons of room on that side of the ca20e.
My biggest problem with the whole setup is fooling the ECU to think the injectors and everything else are still there so the ignition can work.
Colt can make a bastard of a cam for the ca20e ... and I'm probably going to get them to make me an even more agressive design.
If this thing makes 160hp I'll crap myself.

why not use a vaccum advance dist. off an early car and use a blaster coil?

Yeah, and even though that's possible, and would be awesome, it's still not enough to compete with the 2300's. And if it's like a lot of "run-what-you-brung" tracks, then most of the guys are running stroker 2500s or even 3000s with the turbo block.
Not saying it's not possible, my 200 was hanging with the 240's for several reasons. #1 was that it's about 250-300 lbs lighter, and the Mustangs are even heavier than the 240's.

I think he meant ignition as in turning the key... But also if you are doing it for the street you have to consider the guages and so forth. For a race car that's no problem, just wire up the starter and give some juice to the coil and you're set...
And if it was me I'd be running an MSD 6AL somewhere, if it's not legal, stash it up underneath the dash... It's nice to have the extra spark AND a rev limiter for those occasional missed shifts. It's a scary sight to see that little CA20 turn up past the end of the tach!
here is the link to the track i wanna run, and i have a few buddies that race there, and they have modified motors, http://blackrockspeedway.com/ (http://)
OK, here's the way I see it.
#1) The rules say no independent suspension. I assume they're talking about IRS, and unless you have an 84 CA20, yours is IRS.
#2) I think you can definetly be competitive, but no matter what, if you run a CA20 you're gonna be underpowered compared to the 2300's.
The only real problem I see is that they require you to use the stock carb. Now if the officials there are as bright as the officials around here, I'd find an adapter, and adapt a weber carb to the CA20S intake. Dirty it up a little bit, and they'll never know the difference. The stock carb is gonna be a real restriction, and I'm willing to bet that all the Mustang guys are running Motorcraft carbs, which are basically just 500cfm 2 barrel Holleys.
Ask the officials if they will let you run a 2 barrel Holley, tell them that all the Mustang guys do, why can't you? They should be happy to have another car competing that is NOT a Crustang.
Oh, and don't forget to get a custom cam ground, definetly use every bit of the rules, and run as much duration as you can stand...
You know it's funny, but in our Pure Stock 4 Cyl class we whopped serious tail on all the Mustangs. Our class was dominated by S12's and S13's. But we were allowed to run fuel injection. The carbs would have slowed us down quite a bit.
Now my final point. In the spirit of competition, , is there anybody at the track who actually knows a crap about Nissans? Might want to think about dropping in a KA, and I'm pretty sure they make manifolds to mount on a Weber. Now that would be the only real way to be competitive horsepower-wise with the Mustangs.
alrite, thanks man, ill call then track tonite after i get home, and as far as i know everyone there knows pretty much nothing about any kind of import cept toyotas but they are alwasy getting beat by the mustangs, ill keep you guys posted on my progress, also do you know any websites where i could find those adapters?
Might have to end up getting one made. I'm pretty sure they don't make one, but I could be wrong. Just get the gasket for the CA20S intake, and a gasket for the carb of choice, and try some fabricators around the area someone good with a lathe and bridgeport could make one pretty easy...

If you are talking about the tadpole, then I can assure you that it is a live axle setup...trust me I used to own that car at one point. In fact up here there were (some) CA20's running around with the live axle setup until the MKII came out half way through 86...

It is an 85 MKI, it has the vaccum advance already...8)

I was talking about US models since 86200SX1.8 is from the US. I know in Canada and Aus they came with them in other years, but in the US I've only seen 84 CA20's with the live axle...

But we up here didn't get a lot of what you guys got...at least we got the LSD in the Z31 through all the years...8)
