There was no USDM FJ20 motor to my knowledge. I guess some could have been imported but no US Nissans came with FJ20 engines as far as i've ever seen or heard.

Not true ... we have US member(s) [sleepingsorrowGTR I think is his SN] with them. They were rare, as they only came in the 84 S12 but not unheard of. Hence why the motors are so cheap. They've been sitting since the 80s, remanned and no homes.

But I need a fricking bellhousing to mate up to the FS5W71B that I have, and that originally sat behind these motors. They use an adapter plate from the ca18et and a specific bellhousing.

Do the australian and japanese FJs use the FS5 tranny too?

Because if so, maybe I can get a bellhousing from them, maybe even mate it the C tranny and be done with it.

Ok, I have a few leads on cheap FJs ... they're NAs but I think I can have some fun with one.

According to my fiche, the FJ powered Silvias use the same tranny as the early ca20es and CAs - the FSW571B

So any clue where to find FJ bellhousings? *lol*

I have the Nissan part #, but I don't think they'll still sell them ;)

There's a plate adapter between the bellhousing and the tailshaft ... and the part #s are the same turbo/FJ ... ca20e is different

So, for those of us that don't have FJs kicking around, is there a bolt on tranny available?

FJ's? Man I'm jealous...

Mr.200Sep 29, 2004, 4:25 pm · #7

Want one? Find me a bellhousing and I'll spill :p

Joel07Sep 29, 2004, 4:28 pm · #8

How do you find any parts for it at all? That's what I wanna know... That would definetly be something different though... :evillaug:

How common were they in Japan? Maybe one of those importers could help you out...

Well, these are USDM motors, and they're available through my reman guys.

It's a limited stock, as they were exchange motors that they've had kicking around.

I haven't actually seen one yet, they just have them listed as in stock and cheap.

But before I bother going and having them bring one in for me, I'd like to know that I can use it.

Joel07Sep 29, 2004, 8:00 pm · #11

What in the world did they come in in USDM???

Matt, this is a good time for you to inquire with the boys at fj20.com, which is the Aussie site for those engines. I bet you can find your bellhousing there.

Also, what's the difference between the FJ20E and the Fj20ET? Pistons? Valvetrain? I wonder how hard it would be to get an FJ20E, tear it down, and toss in the few (if any) turbo internals (which you can order of of a ny number of ppl on fj20.com).... hmmmm..

p.s. Im moving this to the Fj section people ;)

there's quite a few important differences between the turbo and na motors.
most noticable are the na has a different crank(apparently),smaller rods, higher comp pistons, different cam timing, no oil feed or return holes, a lower rocker cover height, smaller exhaust studs, and im told the turbo has sodium filled exhaust valves. the na also has a 9" clutch where the turbo is 9.5" but the na flywheel is lighter.

externally they look the same though...

the Datsun L series gear box is almost a straight fit to a Fj only thing is it's mounts at the wrong angle, so a bellhousing swap would be needed

sweet ... this is looking better and better.

Now, with the Datsun clan pitching in (Ant-Dat)

If I am not 100% out of my skull here ... the L series bellhousing bolts up to the FJ.

The L28 came in the 280zx which uses a T5 ... same as the 300s.

So ... in my little theory-addled brain

get a 280zx T5, custom driveshaft ... and with all USDM parts, I can stuff an FJ into it.

Hmm, and here I thought I'd never have a use for that 3" cowl I have ...

I have 2 Fj20E and a FJ20ET here as well as a few L series stuff, if you guys want any pics (if i can get at them lol) i can get some for you
I'm sure you need a FJ bellhousing though

My car (FJ20ET) is ex JDM and uses a FS5W71B gearbox, but the turbo box is slightly different from the NA box - bigger bearings.

Cheers
Jon

I think alot of Ausy peeps got for the RB25 box (not sure the number) as it's ment to be a straight fit with only enlogating the 2 top most bellhousing holes

Your right about the difference in the box, My FJ20ET box has no synco in 3rd so i'm going to try a n/a one untill i can get the turbo one fixed or find a RB25 at the right money

VEGIEOct 1, 2004, 10:36 am · #24

if i remember correctly, the r20det box in my gtst skyline was a rp71c
