Just wondering what some symptons are of bad timing.

misfire/backfire
backfire through the airbox timing is too advanced
backfire through the pipes too retarded
Too much advance will make you run hot, ping (detonate, sounds like mylar crinkling)
No power, sluggish - retarded
bad fuel economy
That being said, all the above issues can and usually are related to different issues.
Timing very very very rarely slips out. You have to mess it up in the first place.
Put a gun on it before you even start thinking of blaming the timing.
