Does anyone know what the flywheel specs. are? I am trying to get a custom flywheel manufactured that tallies at 11.5 pounds. It will give the engine a chance to free up about 20 estimated horsepower. So, any help would be helpful! :RTFM:

Hi,

Think the best is to get out your flywheel and have a custom manufactured aluminium one.But the option is the following;

This reminded me one of my recent modification for my standart flywheel.
Our standart flywheel is weight 11.7 kg(sorry I don't know the conversition for pounds)
After removing unnecessary weight from it, the original one now weight
9.0 kg net.
From 11.7 kg to 9.0 kg gives you a lot of room on the weight saving. This is almost a %20 weight saving on the original flywheel which is not bad.

Hope this gives you a figure.

Thanks,

Alp

1 kg = ~2.2 lbs

so 25.7 lbs for the factory to 19.8 lbs for Alp's lightened one

Losing 6lbs of rotating weight is pretty awesome ... and yeah, I'm sure it opened up a lot of power.

Hmmm ... I think I'm going to have to look into this.

I've lightened some Mustang and Toyota flywheels before, you just have to be careful of upsetting the balance in them. Either that or get it rebalanced after you finish cutting the weight off. On the Mustang one I did, I flipped it over on the flywheel resurfacer and cut the backside all the way flush with the ring gear, then put it on the brake lathe and cut about a 1" by 1/2" groove out of the rest of the metal. Then I cut the flywheel side down quite a bit, but you have to be careful there for two reasons. One is if the dowel pins are stepped, you might have to cut down the backside of the dowels. Two is if there's not adjustment in the clutch cable, then you have to shim it up.

But, that shouldn't be a problem for ours with the hydraulic clutch and the straight dowel pins. Wish I would have weighed the one I did. It went in a "Pure Stock" 4 cylinder Mustang, and he said he definetly felt a difference both pulling off the corner and letting off the gas to get into the next one...

i believe the 84 and 85 ca18ets used a litter flywheel then the later ca18et's i have kextyn's flywheel in my garage and the design is way lighter then then the one i have in my 86 that i recently replaced

hey bart, how much for the spare flywheel. it may just be cheaper for me to buy it from you. :honda:

so if anybody knows the 84-86 set-up or a direct replacement, like if a S13 unit will fit. help, the power wants to burn my rubber.

Well, there's 3 different part numbers for flywheels on the fiche

all ca20e and ca18et have been superceded with one part # for all

But there were different ones, so it is possible they were different weights, but good luck finding them.

Bart's using a KA24DE clutch in his S12 ... do you have the FS5 "C" transmission? Do you know if the flywheels are the same?

I know you had to modify something ...

Or even if the "C" and "B" clutches are interchangeable?

my extra flywheel belongs to kextyn so i cant sell it..

i have the c tranny and i only used the s14 pressure plate and disc the flywheel wont work on our cars

Is the KA24E flywheel different than the KA24DE flywheel? I thought the sohc KA24E used a 6 bolt flywheel like our cars do but not sure if it would work or not.

bartc_jdate not saved · #11

they both use the 6bolt pattern but the diameter of the bolt pattern is a bit wider then ours
