few months ago my CA20E blew it's head gasket. so i took the head off for surface grind, one of the steps for removing the engine head was unscrewing the crank shaft bolt. i locked the crank shaft by putting the trans into 1st gear. but after unscrewing the bolt sucessfully, the clutch pedal became really lite, no pressure at all, but the brake pedal became really tight with very little travel.

i thought pedal pressure would return to normal once the engine is running. today i got the engine running, but the clutch pedal still has no pressure and the brake pedal is still tight.

any suggestions?

did you check the level of the fluid in the clutch resivor

Yep, you definitely have air in the system. You have to find the source. Either low fluid, bad clutch master or slave cylinder, or a leaky clutch line somewhere. Same goes for the brakes. Either you're low on fluid or you've got a bad master cylinder.

okay, i'm gonna check the fluid level then the cylinders this weekend.

why did this problem occur after i used the gearbox to lock the crank shaft and unscrew the crank shaft bolt? both the clutch and brake pedal were working fine before i did this.

It could just be a coincidence, or possibly you knocked something without realizing it...8)

Yep, what you did has absolutely no bearing on your brake and clutch systems. Either you knocked something loose or it's one heck of a coincidence. It's also pretty odd that they both would go at the same time. Another possibility is that your seals in the master or slave cylinder are old, and that while being down for a few months, they dried out a bit and are not letting air bleed into the system. That's really the only other thing I can think of.

i've checked car. the clutch master cylinder reservoir is completely empty and there's alot of fluids around the slave cylinder. so i guess the slave cylinder is leaking and needs to be replaced.

..just for shits n giggles, eyeball your vaccuum lines.

UPDATE:

i've installed a new slave clutch cylinder, bled it, new the clutch works fine.

i also bled the brakes, but the brake pedal still feels stiffer than before i took the head off. i drove the car for a couple of short trips, the brake seems to work fine. so i'm thinking this could just be my imagination, since i haven't driven the car for a while and my foot's forgotten the feel of this car's brake.

thanks for everyone's suggestions.
