Hi folks, I'm new here, and I'm posting this for a buddy of mine. He owns a 1985 200SX with the CA20E motor, and a 5-spd Manual transmission. He was driving home the other day from Connecticut when he said he started to get less and less clutch travel, and within a few miles, he had ZERO clutch pickup. The pedal moves very freely, and returns under spring correctly, but does nothing to move the clutch. Being the clever guy he is, he was able to drive it home without the clutch, and parked it in his garage. He asked me to come over and check it out, and after perusing the engine bay a little (I'd never been under the hood of one of these), I traced the hydraulic clutch line, from the EMPTY sludge filled reservoir, past the firewall, and under to the transmission. Pulling back the rubber boot over what I ASSUME is the Clutch SLAVE Cylinder and release bearing mechanism in the transmission, both of which were covered in Clutch fluid, a bunch more fluid drained out onto the floor. I diagnosed the issue as a bad clutch slave cylinder, but I thought I'd ask here:

Is that actually the clutch slave cylinder under there?

Is it as easy to replace as it looks?

As an aside, my buddy may be leaving the country soon, and I've been looking for a good Autocross car. Anyone here have any real life experience campaigning on of these cars in SCCA, preferrably in Stock class? The RWD intrigues me, makes me think it could be fun. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

The slave is an easy fix. Two bolts and the hydrolic line. They make rebuild kit for about $12, new around $50. I also strongly recomend replacing or rebuilding the clutch master as well. (same prices)

The sludge is tiny metal shavings coused from the worn-out master's piston.

Make sure to flush out the line with clena brake fluid BEFORE you install the new slave and master. It will hold on to all that unwanted junk and make a real mess of things if you don't.

Thanks for the assistance, guys, I'm hopefully going to be winning an eBay auction for a slave cylinder today. I'll check back when it's fixed. :)
