LSD from a z31.
So basically all i will need for an lsd to be in my car is, the rear end off a z31 87-89?
You need the R200 LSD out of a mid 87-89 Turbo 300ZX. The whole thing will bolt right in. Watch out for the 88 Turbo 300ZX SS model. They had VLSD that will NOT bolt right in. You would need the halfshafts and hubs for that swap to work. Good luck finding a Z31 LSD though. They're hard as hell to find, and everybody selling one knows that. They usually go for $500+ used. One thing I noticed is that you make no mention of what motor/year/differential you have. Are you sure you have an R200?
Thnxs,
I have an 86' Ca18et. also, when looking for an lsd on a z31 how do i distinguish the years? do i go by the production date on the door?
like for instance the door tag says 4/87 is that what i should look by?
Yup, the tag on the door. I always check all of them manualy (84-89) Just in case the previous owner put an lsd in.
Ok, its about time i start drifting with an lsd :).
So guys, what exactly is it that i will need from the z31 (87-89 turbo)? Will i need the whole rear end? or just the pumpkin? will it just bolt up or, will i need half shafts from another car?
Do i look at the production date on the doors at the junkyard to tell what year the z31\'s are? or, do i need to know the year on the title?
If possible can someone walk me through this? like explain what ill exactly need?
Thnxs, Tony.
As far as I know all the Z31\'s Turbo\'s 84/88 have LSD\'s and all you need is the Diff which is a straight swop. They are so Rare over here, some people try and use an S13 Lsd in an S12 casing. As for knowing which model, make sure its a Turbo model which you\'ll be able to tell. If you find one get the Throttle body off it as its larger than the S12 one and fits straight on the Four bolt holes. You\'ll just have to open up the Air pipe into it
Only the \'88 SS version of the Z31 will have a VLSD that bolts right up. I went the other route and put in a VLSD from a 240 and just swapped the innards.
On another note if you\'re gonna be drifting alot I dont reccomend this swap. Go directly to a clutch LSD. Save youre money and save up for a good aftermarket unit. I put in the VLSD andI go drifting at the track like 2-3 times a month. I\'ve had it like 4 months now and it does nothing for me now. I have to change the LSD fluid after each time I go drifting, and at this point its so worn its working like an open diff again.
someone had mentioned that the z31 87 turbo\'s were clutch type lsd\'s. if this is true. i will look really hard for one cuz i ratehr not get a vlsd.
What about the LSD\'s they sell in Jeg\'s in the Sport Compact section? Can\'t remember the name of it right now, but it\'s only around $200, and it says it\'s for the R200... Haven\'t heard of anyone running that one... Might be easier than all the junkyard swapping, and might be tougher too...
Thats the phantom grip and its a peice of junk. It says it right in the name NOT A REAL LSD.
for very minor use and for maybe dragf racing the phantom grip would help but not really worth the 20bucks
So basically all i will need for an lsd to be in my car is, the rear end off a z31 87-89?
From there its just match the parts from my stock rear end with the other rear end so it bolts up right?
If im incorrect plz feel free to correct me.
