How do i remove my stalk? Ive been having problems with the rotating part that flips on the headlights. when ever i even touch it sensitively, it will either turn a headlight on or off.

I wanna go to the junkyard and get another one unless i can just replace the rotating part of the stalk taht turns the headlights on? would be better then having to replace teh whole thing.

Does anyone know how to take teh whole stalk off? or if you can only remove the rotating part?

Thnxs, Tony.

First step is to remove the plastic surround from the steering column; there are I think 3 screws, phillips head, that you access from below (easy enough to find by touch). With the screws off the top and bottom of the surround split apart, and you can get to the base of the stalks. Each side is held on by 2 more phillips head screws.

Ok the stalk can be removed with two screws after you take offf the top and bottom sections of the steering column cover. after you take out the stack you will notice a clear cover on one side. If you remove that you will see where there are a series of fingers. Bending them back should solve your problem...8)

Oviously don't bend them too far....or nothing will work. If I remember right....2 fingers on one side are for low beams(left/right) and 2 on the other side are for high beams, and the center one is for the parking lights. The easiset way to figure out which ones operate what is to turn on the low beams....then gently pull back each finger till one of the lights goes out....then you'll know which one is for the left and right sides...then do the same with the high beams.
Oh........and if you buy a new one from Nissan they only sell the WHOLE assy....meaning the headlight/cruise stalk, and the wiper stalk and the center section where the stalks bolt to.....and very pricy too.

Thnxs guys,

Is the clear cover on the actuall talk? or, is it in the steering wheel column like beneaths the covers im going to remove?

Keithdate not saved · #6

the clear plastic cover is on the stalk itself hiding the fingers.....within the casing. It's more of a whitish/yellow color depending on the age of it.

Alright, i finally found time to remove the stalk and i found the fingers in the clearbox you guys were talking about.. ;)

Now, i noticed that my problem is that when i turn on the lights/lowbeam. The lil clip that holds the fingers of the lowbeam wont go down unless i manually push it down.:(

That lil clip is only suppose to come up when i turn off the lights.

Is there any way i can remove the clear box (with the fingers) and swap in another working one from the junkyard?

Also, in order to do this i need to know a lil info.Did all s12's come with these clear box/fingers? like for instance ca20, ca18. vg30, all came with this?

If so, i'lll be really happy cuz i know a junxyard i can grab one from :)

Plz Reply, Tony.

The only difference between any fo the stocks is the fact that some are different if you have the cruise control...but if you do not have cruise then any will fit, and if you have cruise and you get one without the cruise option, then your cruise will no longer function...

Actually you should find that there are quite a few nissans with an identical - or at least compatible - stalk. There are in Australia anyway. What you need to watch out for before handing over $$$ is that your "new" stalk is from a car with pop-up headlights, and that the pop-up switch is connectable (possibly with some chopping and swapping of connectors). Try connecting up a stalk for a car without pop-ups and turning on the headies, its at least mildly amusing.

If I have cruise, and swap in another stalk with cruise, my cruise won't work anymore?? :???:

Yeah.......I had snagged a couple of Gen. 1 Maxima stalks from the junkyard a couple of years ago....and your right. They look the same.....but since they didn't have pop-ups it wouldn't work.
You can pull out just the fingered part out of the stalk shell, and just switch over that if your arm is in better condition than the one at the junkyards. But yeah.....any S12 one will work, just get one with cruise if yours has cruise.

GODDAMNIT..!!!

I went to the junkyard today and whatayah know? The black damn clip that connects to the clear box was hanging on both the only s12's there. Someone pullem both!! :(

I dont have cruise control. i pulled out the pump. i thought it looked disgusting on my engine bay lpus, i never use it. Someone have a spare WORKING stalk they are willing to sell? Or a junkyard with s12's they can pull one from?

Ill pay yah! ;)

Let me know......the pick-npull here has about 7 ca20 s12's, and seems like most had the stalks still in them.

Thnxs for looking out keith!!

But fortunately, i went to a diffeent junkyard today and found a prestige 88 2.0 s12. I ofcourse got the stalk and bent the left lowbeam finger a bit. and BAM!!! i now have low beams and high beams :)

It feels so good watching those lights pop up and wait for that split second before they turn on and go FLASH...LIGHT.! :)

whoops typo, if you have cruise, and get one without cruise, the cruise won't work...sorry but that...it makes a bit more sense now...8)
