Hey guys,
I would like to know which is the best place to tap into for a boost gauge? Where is the best or where have you each tapped into to get boost readings? the easier the better, later.
Tapping for Boost...?
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Aug 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
Best place would be as close to where the air enters the engine as possible, i.e. just before or even into the plenum. That way you're measuring the boost as the engine sees it, after any losses in the piping and intercooler.
wheres that located? and how would i tap it?
Easisest place would be on the side of the intake manifold, where that 90 degree nipple screws into, and has the hose that runs to your carbon canister.
Just add a "t" there and run one hose to that nipple screwed into the manifold, and one to your boost gauge and the other connect the line from the canister.
Near turbo and before intercooler: This is good if you want to know the exact amount of psi your turbo is running. This is good if you want to know how much boost your turbo is exactly running when you raise the boost.
Near Intake Manifold after intercooler: This is good if you want to know the exact amount of boost is being fed into the engine after the pressure drop caused by the cooler and intercooler bends. Good way to save the engine from too much boost, bad that you dont know exactly how much boost your running from the turbo.
I got mine plumbed into the intake mani :werd:

If you can afford it, I would do both. It's a bit extreme, but would be pretty cool in my book, and it would give you more information than just one gauge. You could see what the turbo is producing, what the engine is getting, and how much the piping is affecting it. This would be nice for upgrades, because then you could see how much of a gain you really had. For example, if you upgrade turbos, and see a large increase at the turbo, but a smaller increase at the engine, you would know that it was time to upgrade to larger piping as well.
I don't know, that's just what I'd do for fun. Really, I'd run it to the intake. Also, if you are running a BOV instead of the wastegate, I wouldn't run it at the turbo outlet. When that thing opens up you'd get a huge increase at the gauge, and very little would be making it to the engine. Not the ideal setup for the safety of the engine or the turbo, because if the BOV wasn't opening right, the gauge wouldn't show a noticeable difference, and you could end up with higher boosts at the intake than the engine can handle.
take the pop off valve off and then use a 1inch pipe plug and then tap that yo use a brass fitting do you can use that place to tap it in here i'll show ya

hey bart, what kind of hose is that? My boost gauge brought a small thin hose. I dont think it will fit like that.
see that small white hose coming out of the brass fitting on top of that plug i mentioned thats the hose that came with my guage
