Just wondering what the cadet crew guys are running for intercoolers and piping? My plan is a srt 4 front mount and 2.5 piping. I'm gonna use a crushed 1g dsm bov as well.
CA18det fmic's

Im using a stock S13 sized ARC cooler. The end tanks have been modified so that the entry and exit holes are straight on both sides to help minimize bends.
Neby is using a Stock 3L supra cooler that has been modded.

A guy name Too_much_boost sold his gaz to nebs mate and this is his setup, "AVO stage 2 cooler off a VL Turbo"

ya that would be a good fmic to use.. i am using a daytona core but soon will have a big sparco bar/plate fmic. as far as piping you want you hot pipe to be very close in inner diameter to the turbo outlet of the compressor housing and the cold pipe the same size as the tb..
Also if you can buy a good bov instead of a factory 2nd item. Last thing you want is too leak out boost. Your CADET turbo can pump 14psi and i think most factory bovs will leak at his level. Just my thought :o
yeah, those damned 1G DSM BOVs start to leak at a pithly 20 PSi ...
30 if you crush em
;)
otay, so you guys think there would be significant drawbacks to mounting the ic on the inside of the frame? i.e. moving the radiator back and mounting the ic infront. My thought is less fab work and less piping to pressurize. hmmm 2.5 is gonna be mucho mas grande than the stock up pipe.
BTW in these NW wood along with bigfoot theres a V6 volvo running 23 psi on a crushed 1g bov ;)
Any thoughts on what would be overkill/too big for a ca18det with a T28 and ~ 10 psi? Just asking because the large npr intercoolers are temptingly cheap. As are the large volvo peices. I'm not into haveing to wait very long for my boost. Guess I'm just a impatient junkie.
My cooler is actually from the 1JZGTE powered JZA70 (2.5L tt) but it's very similar to the 3L core, it's a touch bigger but very similar.
I wouldn't advise larger than 2" piping, the bigger the piping the more you have to pressurise. Mine is 2" from the turbo to the cooler then from the cooler to a step up to 2.5" pipe then a 2.5-2.75 silicon joint to the throttle.
Mounting the cooler in front of the radiator will give you short inlet tract and it'll have alot of air going to it, although it won't flow through quite as well as a front mount cos of the rad straight after it but not a big deal probably.
Make sure whatever cooler you use doesn't flow to poorly, no point in making boost then losing pressure in a crap cooler no matter how big it is. My cooler is 570x320x70 and seems to be fine, somthing around VR4, EVO, supra sized would be good i guess.
Hmm but the tradeoff for it being a lot of air to pressurize is that you can flow a larger volume at a lower psi, right? Is the velocity going to be a problem as well at 2.5 in?
I doubt that 2" will be restrictive in any way on your car, it's just more space for the turbo to fill before the air will get moving. I don't know the intricacies of fluid dynamics but it seems reasonable to me that you may be flowing more air along your pipe cos it's bigger but if it's moving slower it's getting to the engine slower and it won't be giving you any boost in performance cos it's not getting jammed into the cylinders at the critical moment as hard? Anyone got any better ideas than my random guesses?
Makes you wish you had access to like 50,000 bucks worth of test equipment, doesen't it. ;) I know theres a point at which the T25 is just not gonna want to move that volume of air with 1.8 liters puffing on it, but I don't know when that point comes.
Hmmm this makes me think that people saying "I ran X psi on the stock pump and injectors." aren't really giving any important info. What they need to say is " I moved X volume of air at Y speed at Z temprature" and then you could figure what you needed. I wonder if there is an gauge that I could install that would mesure that info rather than psi.
Gah and does the psi make it harder for the turbine to compress the air further, meaning that a smaller turbine could opperate with more efficincy(sp)? I need to take a class in fluid dynamics.
Yeah it's amazingly complex i'm sure. The volume of air and the PSI are probably both needed to tell the story properly, a T2 at 18psi won't be moving the air that a GT2530 will be at 18psi, so i guess the relevant number is volume per second or somthing like that. I guess it's similar to power outputs on a dyno. The area under the torque curve is more important than anything else but people always want to know peak power (and don't even care about the shape of the curve or the rpm the peak power is made at). PSI is a convenient 'fooly sik' number you can impress your mates with just like peak power. Usefull but not the be all and end all i guess.
oh just to let everyone know i wil soon be getting my starion fmic in so my daytona core which is a sparco bar/plate core ic will be up for anyone that wantrs it it will have al neccesary piping, but it will only fit if you have no ac
www.johnnyracecar.com has awesome intercoolers for a great price .. friends civic is hold 385 whp on the 6inch fmic at 14 psi !!!!!!!
That is identical to mine the one from Johnnyracer. Perfect size
