I'll start by saying that I am new to this forum. I have a few questions about the s12 suspension. I am about to purchase an s12 with the 4 cyl. turbo motor. i want to build it up for drifting. I have been drifting an AE86 for the past 2 years and i want to try something new. I am not that familar with the s12. I was wondering if anyone hear could give me some advice on suspension. I would like to hear all the options expensive, not expensive, bolt in or fabricate. I do have one friend who used ti drift an s12 when he was stationed in japan and when he came back he brought his rear suspension back with him, I'm not sure what he has but he now has it in his AE86. So I was wondering if anyone hear knew of anything about interchangable parts between these 2 cars. I have been searching all the places that i can think of and can't find many options. Any help would be greatly appreciated on any aspects of this car not only suspension.

THANKS
Mike

S13 front coilovers with s13 hubs and fabricated tie end rods.

Rear Z31 springs - custom height and rating will be needed.

Diff needed will be the R200 Long nose which is from the Z31 and R31. Youll also need Z31 cv shafts.

Search the old forums. Alot of suspension stuff!!

I'm running a similar setup to salps with S13 coilovers under the front, rear end is the same to but the 260lb 60mm lowered Z31 coils are to soft for drift really, works ok but i want stiffer on the rear. Still rolls to much. Clutch pack LSD a must, straight up, get it first (do CA18ETs have one stock?)

The only S12 that got LSD stock was the RS-X with the FJ20ET. Maybe some of the later ones with the early CA18DET but not for sure.

I'm running:
Front:
S13 Cusco Coilovers
S13 Hubs, Rotors, , Spindles, Brakes
S13-S12 Tie Rods from A-1 Racing

Rear:
S13 VLSD soon to be a clutch LSD
HyperCoil 10" 500 lb Springs in the rear

Car handles like a dream. A couple of the really good guys at the local drift events love the car. Now I just need to get good. :)

If you need the Tie Rods, I had A-1 Racing make them custom for me but they are now selling them as a full product. A couple of the guys on here have bought them and they love them so give them a call if you're interested.

WHAT DO U MEAN BY THE 500 IB REAR spring, and how much?. As well as i still have not done anything about my suspension and and am sr pawerwed. Can someone give me a quote on how much s13 coilovers, roters and calipers should be. Also how long would it take to install all this? :dontknow:

f! 500lb rears! what are you running up front!?!? im running 450s front and 340s rear and how light the car is i count not deal with anything more, not to mention that the car has a dangerous amount of oversteer at this point, i need to make it out there soon i want to check out your setup, maybe trade ideas

Quite a heavy rear rate, i have 260lb but they are to soft, i'm looking at using 320-250lb rears next, my fronts are 400lb or so now. Still not as spine compacting as yours :|

i ment between 320 and 350lbs hehe...

To tell you the Truth I dont know what my fronts are but they are even more stiff than the rear I can tell you that. In my search for just the front coilovers (and due to the fact that I was, and still am, poor as hell) I came across my coilovers on Rinkya. They were listed as Used coilovers so I bought them for about $80-$90. BTW I dont recomend buying coilovers from rinkya, the shipping will rape you. Anyways the coilovers are alittle shorter than regular s13 coilovers and the only reason I know they are Cusco is because it says so on the camber plates. As it turns out the shocks on the coilovers are really worn and pretty much done for. So when I went to install them (I was too anxious) the tire sat WAY TOO LOW. So I adjusted the spring seat almost to the top thread. Its the only thing keeping me from bottoming out. The result is a stiffness that rattles the bones. Judging from how the rear feels with 500lbs I estimate my front to be about 600-650lb spring rate. The front is WAY STIFFER than the rear.

I drive like Ace Ventura did in I in number 2 when he's driving through the jungle in the landrover singing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. :)

Once I had done the front I realized after 1 drifting event that something still had to be done for the rear. So I went to show A-1 Racing how their newly constructed Tie Rods worked out and we began looking and testing with springs that they had in the warehouse.

Our stock springs are about 14inches tall. But they didnt have 14" tall springs so we tested with a 12. I wanted to do 350lbs-450lbs around there. When we tried a 12" 425lb spring we found that it raised the rear even HIGHER than stock. I mean monster truck time. So I figured we jump down to a 10" spring at the same spring rate and it should be good. But when it came down to it they only had a pair of the 500lb springs. All the others were just the single springs. Me, being the impatient bastard I am, took the 500lb ones and that was the end of it.

I'm really glad I got the springs though. The rear feels no different because of how much the front shakes. Except for the fact that there is NO acceleration dip when I slam on the gas. ITs all power forward. As far as drifing it, it handles like a dream. Very hard to control at low speed drifts, but awesome at high speed drifts.

The only problem I have is that I'm still riding on KYB oem replacement shocks in the rear. So sooner or later the springs are going to blow out my shocks. If bart would tell us which shocks and for what car he's runinng in his rear I should be good. The only thing I know is that they are KYB Gas-A-Justs. But I dont know for what car and year they are. Cuz they certainly dont list them for ours.

Anyways thats the story of my suspension. To Be continued with A-1 Tension Rods....:)

How does the rear sit with the 10" springs? You might have similar coilovers to mine, i have cusco comp S, only have preload adjust and are blue with red perches. Guy i bought them off said they were some of the stiffest coils he had ever ridden on in a S13, but i didn't really think they were that bad. I think he had Tein HR or somthing in his own 180sx.

JasterM5date not saved · #13

THATS AWESOME!!! Those are the ones I have. like I said I adjusted the perch to the highest thread and its ridilculously stiff, but I like it.:)

Its funny cuz my friend was driving next to me and he said he can see my tire's sidewall flex not the coilovers.

As far as the rear, it sits fairly nice. It dropped about 2 inches and gave it a nice stance.

I found "univerasl" springs on planetperformance.com , and they come in several spring rates, and are sold spring by spring...
maybe...
