anyone ever tried putting 240sx brakes in the rear? i understand its not a big upgrade but it would allow for three important things, one, we would have more rear pads avalible to us, two we could use braided lines front and rear, (assuming youve already done the s13 front swap), and three we would get better cheaper rear rotors, like slotted brembos not custom slotted, just an idea

Spooleddate not saved · #2

Are the 240SX rear rotors vented? I know the stock S12 brakes are solid disc. You could easily do a rear brake conversion off of a later Z31 turbo, which were vented disc. I've never looked into the 240SX rears, so I don't know how easy/hard it would be, but it might be something to look into.

Nebuchernezzerdate not saved · #3

S14 rears i presume? The S13 rears are, as far as i know, identical to the S12. I don't think even the S14 rears are vented but never had a close look at em.

brownsilviadate not saved · #4

no i was thinking s13 rears,i had no idea they were identical! if they are identical that is very good news.... in a way... lol, that means brembo slotteds and project mu pads will fit nicely :) can anyone conferm this!

Nebuchernezzerdate not saved · #5

I'm using S13 rotors cos my IRS came with none (they are the same) and the part number on the brake pads is the same, i assume the calipers are to. This is handy for me cos it means i can get some Project mU D1 spec rear pads for that extra handbrakey bite!!

Yes but not in sweden the s13 part dose not fit the s12 we have here :-(

Can somebody confirm the S13 calipers for the S12??

Mechperformancedate not saved · #8

Just a heads up.....I had a set of Brembo Slotted and crosdrilled 11" rotors and Q45 calipers with pads from my old S13 brake upgrade and found out tonight that it is a direct swap.....Dunno if thats allready common knowledge, but they are 2 piston calipers.....As you know the Q45 is huge and heavy so the calipers have amazing stopping power and its WAy cheaper than the Z32 brake upgrade.....I picked up the rotors and calipers from www.jgycustoms.com on sale for 300 complete with PBR pads..... Just a little tid bit..... And the S14 rotors and calipers are identical to the S13 rear brake setup so if the S12 is the same as the S13 then its a useless upgrade.....

There's something weird here ...

S12 and S13s have different part numbers and different setups for the rears.

If they do swap, it's not because they're the same, they swap because all 3 cars use the same rear end and similar setup.

Now, if S13 stuff fits, that's good news and hardly a "useless upgrade"

Anyone priced out a set of S12 rear calipers :o

Those Q45 calipers you bought ... are they OEM? I don't know why a performance shop would sell OEM calipers for $300 with a Brembo rotor and fancy pads "on sale". I think we have a slight disparity in what is considered cheap.

But if they're OEM, I'll see which is cheaper, S12, S13, J30 or Q45 and find out a jobber rate.

Getting slotted/crossdrilled rotors is no problem, for any car.

Only place rear discs make sense to me is on an endurance road course. They handle about 10 percent of your stopping, and since the handbrake is a mechanical, drums lock really easily. Rear discs also control 10% of your stopping, but 90% of your bling ;)

Spending a bunch of cash on brakes that don't do much except for look pretty through your rims doesn't make sense to me.

Not having to pay a ludicrous amount of money for parts that fail ... that makes sense.

Um....I guess you missed the point......Q45 calipers are 2 piston calipers....The rest you lited are cheap cheese dick 1 piston POS's....

And why would you even consider an S13 rear brake swap an Upgrade....If they are all the same shit then whet did you upgrade to? You guys like to argue too much......Read before you post.....

2 piston Q45 upgrade.....

http://www.jgycustoms.com/images/brakeupgrade.jpg

Fast Brakes 2 piston 11" upgrade - 11" slotted and drilled rotors with Q45 Calipers, includes pads. A great budget upgrade! Also will fit 2000 and up Sentra. - $595

Read this about brakes.... (http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/january03/240sx_brakes/)

Did you read the post you quoted? *lol*

The S13 brake setup is NOT IDENTICAL ... yes, they're all single potters, but they are different parts.

Stock rear calipers for an S12 are ridiculously expensive, and can be hard to find.

S13 rear calipers are CHEAP. So upgrading parts that fail - like brakes, to a less expensive alternative is a GOOD UPGRADE.

Spending $600 in parts to do your rear brakes every time you have to do them = BAD

Spending $100 in parts to do the same job without compromising the brake balance = GOOD

You also missed my other point.

Upgrading your rear brakes to outperform your fronts is dumb.

Your front brakes handle 80-90% of stopping.

So by spending a bunch of money to have 2 or 4 pot rears is silly. You will also probably end up with a badly performing car. The S12s proportioning valve and master being designed to work with single pot calipers can cause a drastic braking imbalance.

I dunno about you, but for me coming hot into a corner with the rears locking under moderate pedal is not really the fastest way around a track.

But hey, what would I know?

BOSSMANdate not saved · #13

I think it depends on the country and/or model year of the car. My 86 turbo built in 1985 has the smaller rear caliper and disk. I found this out when I bought some rebuilt calipers from Craptires. I got a big right and a small left caliper and I end-up going back and forth four times before I got the right right one....then it rain and rain and rain............ so I had to build a little tent so I can change my caliper.......

Who said anything about having 2 or 4 pots in the rear?

I said I swaped the 2 pots up FRONT!

Not to mention I'm not worried about The master cylinder, Its also an upgradeable part.....

I dont **** around with haggling about prices....If it performs better it performs better, period.....I make enough money to support my habit, I also work for Nissan so parts are rather in-expensive for me...I guess I think more on a custom level than ppl just trying to use other parts from a counter part older brother of the S12....I have many options due to the expirience I have with MANY other nissan parts every day......

Just my 2 cents but I think we are comming from two tottally different worlds.....

Mr.200date not saved · #15

Sorry, in my world, in threads about "240sx rear brakes" I assume we're talking about ... rear brakes :o

As for parts, Nissan will never get you anything cheaper than you can get it elsewhere. Why? Because Nissan jobs everything out.

If you're buying parts at Nissan, you're paying for whatever company built them (don't be fooled by the fact is says "Genuine Nissan Parts") the shipping to get it from Mexico here, then the mark up over that because of the first line status ...

Going straight to the jobbers for second line saves about 60-80% over what Nissan wants, if you get a jobber rate.

I agree we're from different worlds.

If I had all the money in the world to spend on my car, I still wouldn't stand back and throw it at my car.

It's pretty much common knowledge here what parts we can rush out an buy ... but I rarely recommend paying riced up prices for riced up parts that no street car will ever need.

Our philosophy has always been race until you break something. Figure out what broke, why, upgrade and race again.

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #16

dang! :yikes: !!! I feel like I'm putting my life on the line just posting here :guns: .
Here's my 2 cents.
-Front brakes should lock up a bit before the rears, so upgrading to a huge brake in the rear dosn't seem to make sense unless you're upgrading the fronts
-I agree with Mr. 200, in that we race 'till something brakes, fix it, then race again, but I agree with mech-whatever(sorry, forgot your name-thingy) in that brakes are a crutial peice to upgrade. What I'm trying to say is there's the traditional S12 way to do this, but there's also another way, and maybe both ways are right.
-Third... what the F***, I forgot. oh well
-Fourth, the s12 is a light car, so MR. 200's probably right, you can probably use the over the counter parts, but if mech wants to go big brake, let him, hey, maybe it will be a great upgrade

kextyndate not saved · #17

So let me get this straight. The Q45 upgrade is for the front or rear? The stock brakes are what...2 pots front, 1 pot rear? If you were to upgrade to something other than that you would probably want to upgrade the master cylinder as well correct? Does the Z31 have 2 front, 1 back or what?

brownsilviadate not saved · #18

guys this thread was supposed to be about s13 rear brakes, and if they were the same as s12 rear brakes, for one reason, if they are, that means we can use s13 rotors and pads in the rear, try finding poject mu pads or slotted brembo rotors for the rear s12..... anyways maybe you should start a Q45 thread, so does anyone know if we can use s13 rotors and pads in the rear??

Mechperformancedate not saved · #19

I agree lets get back on topic.....As far as I can tell the rear brakes off of my S13 will fit My Tester S12......(A base model IRS S12 with no engine someone gave me) The caliper mount points seems to be the same but the brakes are definately not the same....Or at least not comparing this 86 next to my 91 S13........But yes I would say that they fit.....

-Jeff

YankeeDrifterdate not saved · #20

According to my manual, at least the rotors are the same, if not the calipers too. Mechperformance would know best by what I can gather.

Nebuchernezzerdate not saved · #21

Things that are the same on s12 and s13 rear brakes:
Rotors, yup they are identical i'm using s13 rotors on my rear end. Why? Cos S12s are rare in IRS in oz and i needed rear rotors, they cost me like $30au.
Pads, yup, i looked up the part numbers in a bendix catalouge the same pad fits, this is a good thing cos i can put project mU pads in and rip it up with some handbrake action.
Calipers, not sure, they mount in a different spot on the S13 (in front of the rotor not behind) but they are still single spots with a caliper handbrake, certainly no upgrade to go to S13 anyways.

The stock brakes are what...2 pots front, 1 pot rear? If you were to upgrade to something other than that you would probably want to upgrade the master cylinder as well correct? Does the Z31 have 2 front, 1 back or what?
The stockers are single pot fronts single pot rears, anything more on any stock car indicates a very sporting factory performance or a porcine kerb weight. Car manufacturers will go with the cheapest part that will do the job.

I just went out and looked at what you are talking about and you are right...this will probably not work, caliper wise.....But as long as its the same pads, why even try......Just use S13 rotors and S13 pads......

-Jeff

brownsilviadate not saved · #23

i stoped into autozone today and just double checked on the pads, my 86 "ca20e" s12 takes the same pads as an 89 240sx s13, so pads and rotors ARE the same, one last thing we should findout is if brake hoses are the same, so us few who did an s13 swap up front could just get a set of braided stainless lines for an s13

youthanasiadate not saved · #24

What do you need to do an S13 front brake conversion anyways?

Caliper, caliper brackets and rotors? That's it? The brakes would fit under the stock 15" wheels right?

brownsilviadate not saved · #25

yes the brakes do fit inside the stock wheels, i did a whole s13 front suspention swap, so i dont know if the caliper would bolt on to the s12, but if it does all you would need is brake hose, caliper and pads and rotors

Jsvob03date not saved · #26

..sorry, just a question i have that doesnt warrant a New topic..

would the rear brakes from a 95 maxima(or any max in that generation) work for the se? its 5 lug, and ill be if the rotors arent REAL close to our size..
