R230?!? No one ever told me about the R230!

Ok, after bathing in diff oil with Alex for a few hours to get this damned thing out, now I'm hearing I might not be able to use it at all :(

Anyone know for sure if the R230 VLSD out of a 92 Q45 is of any use to me at all?

Mr.200date not saved · #2

Ok, apparently the Q45s went to the R230 after '92 and this is in fact an R200.

The halfshafts are different than anything I've seen ... instead of being like the VLSD out of the S13 which uses a 6 bolt 3x2 pattern, these were evenly spaced out in a 6 point star.

Any idea what output shafts and half shafts I should look into? The Q45s weren't willing to come with the diff.

Lets hope it is in fact an R200, it would be a shame if all that work was wasted on something that would need heavy modification.

It occurs to me now that with the other guy who was there with the saws all, we could have cut the half shafts, and we could have taken the mating piece too...

As far as fitment goes, I wonder if the J30 half shafts would have fit??

Hybrid Datsun Z guys have been pulling their R200's and installing R230's in their place. It requires the welding of completely new bracketry though, as well as a custom axle package. So it's possible, but a huge PITA.

it's the same as a skyline rear dif. Swap the rear covers, get you're old half shafts and new halfshafts and have them "fused" at a drivshaft shop. As well you'll probably want to pull the "yoke" off the dif and swap it with the s12/r200 style yoke. THis is a simlple 26 or 27mm nut (impact gun)

No these isnt some crazy dif, it's just a beefed up r200. When ordering an lsd, this is the 12mm option instead of the 10mm that is standard for S Cars.

We wern't able to get the old half shafts out of the Q45, so we think we can swap the innerds...and according to the stats it is a R200, so lets just hope...

if you guys were at standard on the free day, why didn't you pull a 240 dif?

It was a KA24E, and it doesn't have the LSD (or so I am told), only the DE models came with the LSD. PLus they only had one 240 there...

Eggs-act-ly

It was the only VLSD there.

And FYI, diff mounts are no match for a Zippo, sidecutters and a screwdriver.

Yeah, turns out this diff is no different than any other R200.

So hopefully I can figure out the shafts. Other than shattering a socket, it was actually a pretty straightforward job. I still smell like diff oil though.

hmm, i hope it was worth it. last time i asked around it was less than $100 to have the whole pumpkin pulled for me at various wreckers. one in guelph has about 4 240's... there are even a few left in k-w.

can't you just install the lsd unit like the one other guy did?

I got the socket replaced, and so does my 200 :( but in my opinion it was worth it...8)

The problem is the only people with S12s that have swapped in the VLSD without modification were SEs. I don't know if the SE half shafts are the same or not.

This is the same diff that came in the S13s. But I have heard that you have to shorten your halfshafts by 3 mm a side or something. It's not a problem to get this done, I just have to find out if I need to do it.

And if the V6 halfshafts are different than the turbos, and they work without modification, I'll just buy a new set. They're not spendy.

But I don't have pt#s for the V6 models, my microfiche only covers Euro/Aus models. If someone has this info, would be greatly appreciated.

Not ALL Canadian 240s came with VLSD. Only the DOHC 5 spd models did.

I think I'd almost rather a VLSD out of an auto Q45. Odds are it had a much easier life.

the shafts are different. the ca20 has a smaller spline diameter than the vg30. I found that out after a drifting accident.

the shafts are different. the ca20 has a smaller spline diameter than the vg30. I found that out after a drifting accident.Yah thats because the CA20 uses a R180, and the VG, and Turbo uses the R200. So what we don't know is if the R200 out of the VG uses the same half shafts as the Turbo, or if they are different yet. The Q45 R200 will be going into an 87 Turbo model. So the question remains, does the turbo, and the VG have the same half shafts???

wish I had gotten back to this thread faster.

No, you cant swap SE model (s12) output shafts into this dif to match a pair of se halfshafts. The reason being, the R240 output shafts are of 12mm make, while the R200 for the S12 SE/TURBO, and S13/14 are of 10mm Design. This is the KEY ELEMENT that makes this DIF so much better. Get The Q45 Halfshafts, take everything to a driveshaft shop and get it welded together!! And while you're at it, make a 1 peice driveshaft too!!

What is an R240?

Who has it, and what the hell?

The question involves an R200. We thought it might be an R230, but it is not. It came out of an earlier Infiniti.

I thought the R200 went from 10mm to 12mm for the 86.5 - 88 diffs

Hmm ... maybe that's it?!

AHHHHHHHH where the F*** did the R240 come from, and WTH...Too much information, and too early in teh morning!!!:wall: :wall: :wall:
