Hey everyone, I hope somebody could give me some advice. When I start my engine from cold it takes around 15 - 20 seconds for oil pressure to build up (3/4 across the gauge). Crusing when hot the gauge drops back to about 1/3 way across. Does this sound normal ?The engine never knocks or rattles.
I have the cylinder head off at the moment to change the worn out turbo and was wondering if i should pull the block out and change the bearing shells and check the oil pump but don't want to if if it's not neccesary.
Also I got the turbo back from the reconditioners today and there is like 0.6mm of side play on the rotor shaft (measured at the exhaust turbine end) Is this usual?..It just feels a little loose to me but the shop insists it's fine. Appreciate any suggestions.

According to the owners manual the gauge should read 35-60psi @ 2000 rpms with the engine at normal operating temps.
Thanks for the reply that's very useful. Looks like my car has about 35 - 40 psi oil pressure if the gauge is accurate. Can anyone tell me if their car runs higher than this when hot or if it improved after a bottom end re-build.
Thanks again.
I always wondered too with my old motor......but when I got my new remanufactured ca18 and new oil sending unit, the gauge was still the same.....so I guess it's normal where the needle is according to the manual.
At first crank up when engine is cold it's always higher......about 60psi....then after the engine warms up at idle it will drop below the half way mark, and at hwy speeds it's just past the half way mark.
So sounds like yours is where it should be.
Thanks for the information keith, with what you said in mind I will leave the bottom end alone and hope it's ok .I guess these engines must be pretty tough I could still see the honing marks on the bores when I took the head off....the previous owner disconnected the turbo wastegate so I was expecting holed pistons but it all looks fine.
Thanks again.
Hey sure...............no problem
