I heard that you guys know how to make cold air intakes. I would be interested in learning how to make one for my s-12. thanxs
How do you make a cold air intake?

It's pretty easy............
First you need to remove the airbox from the airflow meter, and from the engine bay. You will also need to get an airflow meter adaptor made, or get one from Bart who sells them on here. On mine.....where the air box sat in the engine bay, I drilled a 3 1/2 inch hole using a hole saw so I could extend the pipe down behind the bumper. I also replaced the stock rubber accordian pipe between the turbo and air flow meter with a piece of 2 1/2 inch J-bend pipe. You can reposition the air flow meter a little to allow for a more gentle curve of the pipe extending down......I moved mine back some and it's right below the distributor on the wheel well.
The pipe from the air flow meter to the air filter I used 3 inch J bend.
For a filter I use one that is shielded to prevent splash back from the tire in wet weather.......Ractive is the brand. No problems either in heavy wet weather when I lived in Tampa using the shielded filter. Using a non shielded filter in light rain the water would sling off the tire and get sucked up....Not good!
Here's some pics.

I think I will try to put somewhere inside of the bumper because I already have a nonshielded cone filter and I cant afford a shielded type. I will put it somewhere were it still has suffeciant airflow but wont attract rain and road grime. thanxs for all of the information.
Good luck finding a place like that as there isn't any plastic shields down there under the car so finding a place where the filter won't get wet will be impossible......unless you fab up some kind of shield to protect the filter from water sling-off from the tire.
This shielded filter I got stays dry and clean....with the opening facing foward it doesn't get any road grime or anything on the filter at all......even during a heavy down pour. I've had mine for about 3 years now with no problems. Think I only paid about $25 for it.
Since I bought mine I have noticed that Circuit City sells the Ractive filters. I would of never thought that, but their listed on Ractives website as being a dealer.

They do make an extension kit for it so you can leave the filter in the engine bay, then clamp the extension onto the filter shield then run the flexible pipe out behind the bumper or it comes with a nice finisher so you can drill a hole somewhere and put the finisher on the outside. I've thought about getting this....but not sure yet.

Anyway....let me know if you need some better photos of my set-up.
^^^ for that to be really effective wouldn't you have to be going really fast already ...I mean yea...the intake DOES make suction obviously...but there's no way in hell that it will suck that much to suck in air ALL the way through that tube, especially if it's just sucking through the top...sides would cause a huge "vacuum leak" and the suction wouldn't be as strong as if the cone filter was on the other end of the piping..
my solution?...HEADLIGHT INTAKE YO!!!!!!!
heh...that's what i"m planning...still working out the details, such as...how can I make it so water won't drip onto my headlight wiring???? hehe
Thats mainly why I haven't bought that tube.......looks to be somewhat restrictive. I was gonna get it if I had water ingestion problems with the filter being down below, but so far..........no problems.
I notice a HUGE difference with the filter out of the car vs in the engine bay.
Let me know if you figure out a way to gain access through the headlight area.....I don't see anyway possible.......I took out the carbon canister, and was going to cut a hole there....but on the other side there is a big bracket bolted there for the head light assy. Taking that out probably wouldn't be a good idea.
yea, that's the hard thing..lol
I'm thinking that some side of scoop coming in from the side would work perfect...right there is some electronics but you can move that around out of the way and it's just the body then...but hten on the side it may look odd..ahhaha.
the only reasonable way I can think of is a hood scoop right above the intake.
Yeah......I thought of that many many moons ago. I've had the car since '88, so I've plenty of time to think about it.
I always thought a z31 turbo scoop would work pretty good mounted right over the factory air box with the lid off, then seal the bottom of the hood around the cut-out with rubber weather stripping so it seals and blocks out heat from the engine.
Then again it would require me to get a hood without the hood scoop.....because 2 hood scoops would look really gay.
So....I'm glad I scraped that idea, since the '84-'85 S12's with hood scoops are pretty rare these days.
today I was thinking at work about it..and I was thinking...of maybe drilling a big hole in the shield behind the headlights...and then using PVC or something to funnel the air to the cone filter.
That sounds like what i am doing...three inch flexible plastic dryer duct, and cut a hole in the bottom of the battery tray, then run it out from just below the bumper...really cheap from Home Depot...and it is good for the cold too!!!
This is what you'll find behind your headlight

I had originally planned to run some drier ducting from under the bumper up to that hole there.
But then my headlight conversion ate up all that space,
So what I'm doing is ...
This is where my filter is

Yes, I'm aware my intercooler is digging into the filter. No I don't like it, and yes, I will do something about it. Amazing how little your car needs an intercooler when you don't have a turbo :(
So I did this to the hood

And no, it's not going to be left like that. It will be glassed, and a bit of a ridge built up to make the scoop work.
Then I'm going to build a little aluminum shield for the filter area, and duct air up from the new chin, through an aluminum "trough" and up into that hole.
the intake is a bit noisier through the hole, which is good. The turbo's death gurgle was even louder, which is bad.
But you could do the same thing to a pop-up car. I think there's enough room between the headlight and the eyebrow to make a channel right through to that hole. Won't work with your lights up though.
Would be cool though, wire the driver's side independantly, so you can cruise with them up, and if you need to race *click* down goes the light, and in comes the air.
Yah I'll have to check if there is enough room with the Pop up still functional...and as far as controling one pop up, that will be easy...8)

Hi,
just to have an idea, you can check my cardomain site for my cold ram air intake solution on my S12.
Looks a bit work to do but works great.
Good luck with the project,
Alp
heres mine

I'm gonna try to duct some air in, and I'm gonna try cutting my grille a bit.
