Well since my car has developed a knock I am considering doing a rebuild on the engine. I am wondering if there is a kit of some sort that I can just buy and start rebuilding with? Or do I need to buy all the parts myself?
I am not after a 300+ hp drag car. I just want my car to run again. If this whole thing is going to cost more than $1000 I will be parting out the car and looking for a new project.
rebuld kit for ca18et?

I have bought one of these kits for my CA20E rebuild and it had everything I needed for it including the new pistons and rings. Cost me like $280 for EVERY gasket + more and everything else include upgraded Toga Rod and main bearings and the Toga high flow oil pump.
Yeah they need to make a kit for the CA18ET though that would be nice.
if you are looking to go forged pistons then you dont have a choice, but TopLine makes kits on that website. Click on it, go to Nissan on the left side, then click on Engine Kits, then TopLine OEM Engine Kits, then Re-Ring Kit, then 200SX Turbo (http://www.importperformanceparts.net/imports/nissanenginekits1.html) 1984-86 (http://www.importperformanceparts.net/imports/nissanenginekits1.html) CA18ET 1809cc 83mm
Wow....this new board is awsome. Its copy and paste pictures too! Good stuff. Ill up my donation to the club $5 just for that :)
Ok, back on track.

Just pay for those upgraded rod and main bearings, and if you have some xtra cash, get the toga high flow pump. I have everything and bought the top of the line kit for the CA20E. It was worth it. Everythign is either OEM replacemens(gaskets) or custom like the TOGA bearings and the Oil Pump. Its really good. Thats just my opinion though. If you are going to go with some major power, i think someone had a post on the forums about copper head gaskets for like under $100. The head gasket that I got was good enough. It had copper water jackets and everything a good gasket has. If I had a pic, I would post it. I got the major engine kit, so it came with pistons, and im using them, and they are working good. But the kit available for the CA18ET is good too. Fast shipping, friendly customer service, and packages came undamaged or mishandled. I commend companies like them.
Yeah right now i'm planning on rebuilding and using the better bearings and such. I also want to use beefier rods and pistons if possible. Right now i'm looking at CA18DE stock rods and maybe CA18DET forged pistons or stock CA18DET pistons if i could find them. If not i'll just have the stock CA18ET pistons mated to the pulsar rods if that is possible.
I may have a problem, but that link isnt working for me. I looked them up on yahoo and that link isnt working either.
But just to be sure I understand correct.
if I get new pistons ( stock replacements) and rings and all the new gaskets and oil pump it is going to cost mu under $300?
Since I would have it apart already going with new pistons and rings sounds like a good idea. I would want to take the head in to get re finished and get the valves polished up. Should I be thinking about replacing the springs? after 300,000 km they prolly are getting tired anyway??
Can somebody post a link that works for me? I need to know who is good to go to, and who I should stay away from. I havnt rebuilt a car engine in a VERY long time now so it will be a learning experience all over again. Not to mention my tool supply will need to eb re-stocked.
Does anyone know where I can get a book for our car? I mean a chiltons or haynes, or anything that may be better? I have looked before but had no luck.
ok, I think I have this all straight now. So I can only get the re-ring kit. It comes with all the gaskets I need to do the whole overhaul. I should be able to re-use all the other parts that are in the car then? What about new head bolts and all those goodies? That adds on top of the price? Doesnt nissan want over $200 for just the head bolts though?
Could somebody do a break down of all the parts you think I would need to do ao complete motor refreshing? I dont want to be boring things out or any of that stuff. Just new bearings, gaskets, and various bits so that the motor is as close to "like new" as possible. Also if you have a price range for each part that would help. It looks like the gasket set is in at about $200. I would expect to do the timing belt at the same time. Also would that kit be including the gasket for the turbo? I need to replace that anyway.
Well, Nissan motors seem to be indestructable from a certain standpoint.
The last motor I pulled apart was a 340+ km SOHC KA24. This enine had been turboed, blown, cam seized, then blown.
Even though the rings were destroyed, the head was grenaded, the block was amazing. You could still see the cross hatch on the cylinder walls, and no lip.
If you know what you're looking for as in terms of what makes a motor bad, odds are pretty good, the re-ring kit will be all you need.
If you are sure you've got rod knock, you'll want to have the crankshaft checked out, or check it yourself for wear.
But yeah, if all you want is a fresh ca18et, that's the way to go.
With the HP bearings and a TOGA hig flow oil pump, you'll have a bottom end ready for another 300,000+ miles. Think about it, yours lasted that long on OEM stuff, and you're putting it back together for about the same.
As for the head, just get an upper head kit from NAPA. This kit will include all the gaskets the engine kit doesn't for the top end, including, IM, EM, valve seals etc. But if the engine kit includes a head gasket,
Your springs might need replacing, but they can always be done later without removing the head.
And the people at Flatlander (that's who runs IPP) are fantastic. Their online catalog does not include everything they have either, so call or email them to find out what they can do to help. They might be able to put a good kit together for you.
The gasket for the turbo isn't going to come with it, you'll have to get it from Nissan, but gaskets aren't pricey.
But yeah rering kit $179 ... $269 if you get all the upgraded goodies.
Upper head kit ~$100
Gasket ~$5
I don't know about springs ... someone else can post it
But yeah, figure under $500 in parts total for a brand new ca18et.
I love building motors, it's so much easier than most other things on the car!
If you go to valvetrain on the importperformanceparts.net website they have Toga valve springs for our applications.

This is true...most of the time parts ie bolts, don't break when taking it apart...
told you :lick: just playin
When I get back from my trip to BC I will look at buying the re-ring kit and a head rebuild kit. I guess I should be able to do all that stuff while the engine is still in the car then as well. I just need to take the bottom end off and strip the top end. I just really need to sell my house so I can have space to do the rebuild.
