I was talking to somebody in the internet and he said he thought L24 rods might fit the ca20e?!?! anybody know anything else about this? would be great if it did, would make a buildup of a ca20et much cheaper! he said that the crank dia is 1.9670 but the fsm dosent say the length?

What is the L24...or if it is an engine what did it come in??? 8)

project200sxdate not saved · #3

im not really shure he said "L24" rods when i see him on again i'll have to ask!! :-P

L24 was a bulletproof bottom end motor from a Datsun 280z IIRC. I think we looked into the rods once before on the old board. You may want to do some digging over there.

(oh yea, and I'm glad to see someone from Canton is on here, I am from Hudson orginally)

yeah i just talked to him and he said it was from 70-74 240z and 76-81 810

Connecting rods
Center to center lengths for a few Nissan engines.
L18, L28, L26--------------130.2mm
L16, L24---------------------133.0mm
L13----------------------------139.9mm
L20B, Z22S, early Z22E-145.9mm*
Z20S,- ------------------------??**
Late Z22E-------------------149.5m*
Z20E--------------------------152.5mm
Z24, KA24-------------------165.0mm
CA18ET------------------------133.0mm
CA20E-------------------------149.3mm
I'm not a mechanic but it looks like they would be better suited for the CA18 over the CA20.

so center to center looks good, did we ever decide how the large and small ends matched up? The L24 was a pretty beefy motor (atleast on the bottom end) so this could give the CA18ET guys a pretty nice little setup.

Hell, someone could use this rod with a custom piston and put it in the CA20E block if they had the coin.

Magnumdate not saved · #9

the L24 has a pin diameter of .827"(21mm) and Journal size of 2.087"(53mm).does anyone have the CA's diameters?

ahoffman83date not saved · #10

According to my FSM the CA18ET uses a piston pin bore of .7860-.7865 or 19.965-19.978. (It also lists the piston pin hole diameter on the piston the other spec i gave was for the rod end. the piston pin hole is 20.003-20.012 which is .7875-.7879.) The main journal diameter is 52.951-52.964 or 2.0847-2.0852. The rod center distance is 132.95-133.05 or 5.2342-5.2382. Hope that helps. Looks like the pin on our CA18ET is a little bit too small. If you guys require any more specs just let me know. Anyone know the piston bore sizes on the L16 and L24?

L13, L16, L18, L24, L28: 207.85mm

Z24, KA24: 247.45mm

Hmmmm very interesting. The CA18ET has an 83mm bore also. The L13, L24,
L16, or L26 piston could work possibly. Probably more so the L16 or L26 due to the dished pistons we probably need some sort of valve relief. I can't find any piston pin heights in my FSM though :-? Oh and magnum when you listed the journal size for the L24 above was that the main journal or the pin journal?

Also the CA18ET block height is 209.75-209.85

Magnumdate not saved · #14

thats the main bearing Journal size 53mm and piston pin Journal size is 21mm.

The L24 motor was simply the stock motor in the Datsun 240Z. 2.4 Liter straight six. L26 was in the 260Z, and the L28 was in the 280Z. If you're looking for stuff for an L24, you should be able to find plenty. But, another way to look is to look for stuff for a 240Z. There are a plethera of parts available for that motor, including the rods that may or may not work in the CA20. A quick Google search on "L24 rods" pulled up lots of info, but you probably won't find much info on swapping them into a CA20.

Ok... I'm really no mechanic, but nismo sells brandy new connecting rods. I don't know how stirdyt they are, but I'm prolly gonna get 'em

Good Doctordate not saved · #17

do we have piston pin heights of ca18et pistons? If they are near to the L24, one would be able to use L24 pistons and rods on a CA18ET crank, although the bearing is BARELY off. Are we sure about all the measurements we have thus far?

Magnumdate not saved · #18

all the numbers I have dispayed is from a relyable 240Z site.

ahoffman83date not saved · #19

My measurements are from the 1985 Nissan Factory Service Manual so I would hope they are accurate ;-)

One of you boys in Australia should look for info on RB30et rods. I bet they will drop right into a CA20e and since the RB30 came in some versions of the Holden Commodore and the R31 Skyline, someone down there has to be making aftermarket ones.

Hmmm.. really? have to look into that...

You do know those are stock con rods don't you? I have the nissan motorsports catalog and it lists those same ones in it and next to the part number it has an *. The * means that they are stock parts that you can get at your local dealer. They are no stronger than factory because they are factory.

I just wanted to mention that 82 and 83 Maxima L24 rods are 5mm smaller at the big end of the rod and 1mm smaller at the piston pin hole. They will not work in the earlier Lseries model cars.

L24 rods won't work. Big end of the rod is too big. Crankshaft rod journal on a CA18 or CA20 is 1.770, the journal on an L24 is 1.967...

z240dudedate not saved · #25

Actually the eary L24 rods were 2.087 inches and the late Maxima rods are 1.888 inches. Although, I don't think they make a rod bearing in a .100 inch oversize that would allow you to run on your crank.

Although if somone wanted to, I guess they could have their crank journals welded up and then ground down to the proper size to accomodate the early 9mm L24 rods.
