Hello,... I would like some input on what you guys might think about this,...
I received an 85 200sx from an employee of mine because they where trying to get it off of there property,.... so i went and picked up the lonely lug,...
I have had the car for about 3 months and decided to start working on it,.... As i dove into the car i can see that who ever worked on it before had no clue what they where doing,... this made it even worse on me since i don't have time to dive into projects that I don't make any money on,...
As I was staring at the car,... I started to think about what would be the biggest but lightest block i could put in there,....
a friend of mine suggest the ford small block 302???
I though he was crazy,.... well mined you I work on and tune BMW, MBZ, PORSCHE, VW, etc,.....
So the next day I'm off to go get just that,.. a 302 and a t-5 tranny,...
I'm very concerned about balance so of course the first thing I'm doing is relocating the battery,....
any other suggestions on the balance issues
the car when done ,... will have about 400 ft lbs of trq, and about 390 hp,...
does any one know about the rear end if it will hold up????

302 in a s12?????
This thread was saved without dates. "Around Jul 2004" is estimated from neighbouring threads.
if you have the r200 rear diff it will hold. it's the ford 9 inch of japan. you might look at other things such as body flex and mounting the motor. also you will need to beef up all the suspension with all power you are going to put down.
uhm ... relocating the battery is not going to make much of a difference as far as restoring the balance.
Make money off it ... I'm a bit confused. A 302 in an 85 200sx isn't going to exactly demand a lot of money.
If it is/was a turbo car, the r200 diff will live. They'll hold up behind big blocks.
But the $$ you're going to invest in it, you'll never see a return.
Plus, a 302 is light and small yes, but the trannies are long. You'll end up with the shifter probably in the back seat.
custom mounts for everything, custom front suspension, getting it to function with both Ford and Nissan electronics ... getting the gauges etc.
Unless you're planning a white-trash granny beater (which you'd be lucky to get $1,000 for) that is stripped down, with no functioning gauges, automatic tranny and purpose built for drag racing, you're looking at a massive investment.
You'd be way better off spending the money to build a 300hp turbo 4 that bolts in, uses all the same hardware and will be as fast.
Yep, you've got three basic options for it:
1. Keep it as-is and just drive it as a spare car
2. Fix it up, get everything working right and looking good and see if you can make a small profit on it
3. Rip out the engine, put in something else, cut up the car, make it into a serious street contender, but never sell it because you'll lose every single dollar you put into it
well i mean if you don't want to throw any money then go pick up a vg30et
figure a way to have the turbo in there, up the boost
ic and all the goodies and it will propably be ceaper than putting in a 302
How much does the 302 weigh? It might be an 8 but it's short and probably not physically much bigger than a VG, it would be interesting anyways, throwing in a turbo 4 pot is what a million other ppl have already done anyways :)
The tranny will be in the same spot. I have measured it; using the stock location for the shifter the tranny will end at the firewall...also the inside will not be touched. it's in mint shape....
the car has the diff that comes with the 2.0 2 valve N.A. motor gets
And as for resale I really don't care... there's not much value in what was there and I'm only spending 1000.00 U.S. total for the whole project,.... thats including new paint...leaving it the stock color (white)...it was a free car anyway
I have my own machine shop so fabing any parts isn't a big deal...
basically I want the car to look as plain jane as it it did when it rolled off the line but with the motor and tranny being the only changes....
for the clutch i'm useing the willwood hydrallic puller slave clyinder so i can leave the the master in and give the car a nice feel...
the exhaust: we are using 82 mustang cast manifolds to keep heat down and noise and running a two 2 1/2" in and 3" single out cat with a muffler of what ever i decide todo later on
The H190 rear end isn't that weak so it should be able to handle extra power no probs, there have been some big power 910 bluebirds down here using welded H190s, they are cheap to replace if they go boom anyways.
302 and a manual, nice! i think the R200 diff would be the way to go, unless you wanna CIG lock the H190 center, it them might hold up for a little while. if you decided to relocate everything fron the engine bay to the boot, apart from the donk, then it will still be quite heavy up front, you would have to relocate all the washer bottles, overflow bottles, battery, charcoal canister, and any other non essential parts, then you might save 20kg in the engine bay.......wow not really worth it. just match the new motor's weight with a nicely thought out suspention set-up, and it wont matter......but if you can get a 9inch diff converted into the rear end, then there's some extra rear weight anyway. I think it is a kick-arse idea, and would love to know how it goes. With the extra weight up front, it might solve the S12's inherrit understeer into corners, make it a weapon on the circuit!
The 85 CA20 should have the R180 diff. Here in the states only the 84 CA20 had solid axle.
In that case the R200 is just a matter of swapping the diff itself and the driveshafts, your tailshaft is going to be custom anyways to. Convenient you should never break a well maintained R200 esp if you have a 4 pinion model.
Also, a good idea would be to make up a subframe connector for all that extra power and possibly a rollcage to help keep everything straight. I'm not sure how a 20 year old unibody will hold up to 390 hp.
...i'll buy a kit if you can pull this off......check out hybridz.org...they put v8's into the 240,260,280 cars..lots of info but those kits wont work on the 200sx set up.
I know about the "Z" conversion's for the V8,...
but i wanted something different,... I think the s12 has more character,...
I also was woundering about the unibody,... but the fox box mustang is also unibody,... so i haven't had much concern there,...
I will play around with the rear end a bit to see if it can be stiffend up a bit,... but i don't won't to lose the indepent rear axle,... I want it to handle like a "BMW" Not like A "Mustang"
I haven't really thought of it as a kit,. but that does sound intriguing,...
All of the updates will be posted on www.puta350init.com (http://www.puta350init.com) a site that is managed by us that manily pokes fun at putting V8's in european cars
Heh...I used to know a lady that had a Jaguar XJ6, a late '80s model I believe. Of course the Jag V8 was so unreliable, she had it replaced with a late-model Corvette motor. She told me it gave her much better power, reliability, and almost double the fuel economy.

Wow that doesn't say much for Jag. I believe the newer ones are more reliable, but this isn't the first complaint I've ever heard about the electrical in those cars...or any Jag, and most English cars fo rhtat matter...positive grounds :|...8)

what i have noticed with the jag conversions it's more lack of knowledge of the cars, then it is just poor build quality,.... so some poeple do things in a rash way like "put a 350 in it dot com" :slap:
1,000 total . im sorry but even if the engine was givin to you thats NOT RESONABLE, suspension? drive shaft? and no your shifter will not be in the same place.. but iwould love to see some pics when its down so you can prove me wrong, but that just wont happend im afraid, also you said you own a machine sop but you work on bmw's all day, and jag's .. cant remeber the lasst time i seen a beemer at the local machine shop ..lol

Man this is going to be one KILLER S12.................gives me inspiration to go some killer swap in a spare S12!! You got all my support, even though i am in AUS.
New Jags? Like the uber dollar Contours?
That's a big comp bumpstick. That's Mopar lift territory there.
I guess that's one of their new extreme lift cams ... how's the lobe separation? I was thinking of going with one for the Cougar, but had been advised against it. Fjørds and Shivvys tend to not like much lift at all. Granted that's a '68 289 with 2bbl heads, and the Gt40 heads aren't that expensive.
What 302 did you go with?
Ah hell, if it's not too much bother, I'd like to see the blueprint of your build. I haven't built too many SBFs. In fact only one *lol*
Oh, and BTW none of those links work.
ya dont work for me either
Any updates yet? I'd like to see how it's working out, and see some pics that work!
Seriously, I am really interested in how this swap is going. I might have enough spare parts to throw a cheapie kinda like this together too...
{edit}
I stand corrected, the pics work now, but most of them are BMW's. Looks like a nice shop though!
635csi Turbo??? Man got any pics of that? 6 series are the shiznit. oh and any more info on the ol 200?
the motor is almost done the rods and pistons go in the car on Monday
the pics of the 635csi turbo is on the way the car is Louisiana and the block is here we are putting a B35 head from a e34 535i

Love the Mopars with there wider foot on there lifters. They only real way for the Ford and Chevy to make the higher lift is by going Roller lifters.
