Hey peoples i just went to check the valve clearances on a black top CA20E and found no adjustment screws and what appears to be hydraulic tappets (weird cylinders with a small hole in the top for the tappet. anyway since we cannot adjust them i was wondering how else to fix the tappet noises coming from the bonnet when the car is accelerating also it seems to make weird noises when it is idling (however these are not as noticeable as the noises under acceleration) I have read up on the old boards and think it could be the oil pump however the oil pressure seems to be normal does this mean that the oil pump is okay?
I was just wondering whether you guys have any other ideas on this subject as well.

my car does somewhat the same thing. when i drive a round town it is very quiet, but when i drive on the highway for about 10 mins, it starts to tick. then when you slow down and drive a while under 40mph it will stop. i never thought much of it.
you might have a lifter or lifters sticking. I'd try running a chemical additive first, then just replace. I don't know if Rizlone is even still availablke, but I've had great success with it in the past. My brother's challenger had a brutal tick on just one lifter ... it got quieter when warmed up, but never stopped. One can of Rizlone and it never stuck again, like anothe 60,000 miles. That motor now lives in a different car, and still doesn't tick. I think if you're going to go to the trouble of replacing your valvetrain, I'd step up to mechanical. They are a bit noisier, but much better from a performance standpoint.
yeah i am not sure it makes quieter ticking sounds when idling not really noticable except that the engine is really really quiet... then when you step on the accelerator a bit you get this ticking noise like a lawnmower or something. I don't know about the lifters sticking it seemed like when we turned over the camshaft by hand they were okay no clearance between the hydraulic lifters and the valves... also it doesn't seem to go away when the engine warms up and we just changed the oil.... i think i will have to get a stethoscope and play doctor rob to make sure its no a bearing or fuel injector.
yeah its weird we were expecting mechanical lifters then we opened up the rocker cover and ...... wtf where are the screws what hydraulic ohhhh damn!!! (its a black top from an '84 although it had an engine transplant but it has something that looks like '84 stamped on the side")
mmmmm mopar Mr. 200 don't you have a charger? i was thinking of getting a hemi pacer soon (if i can find one, pacer= weird australian mopars much much different from american ones but still very good)
I have found Lucas Oil Stabilizer to be quite effective at quieting noisy lifters.
And it's a good thing you're from Australia, rob101. For a North American, the words "Hemi" and "Pacer" together do not compute at all, and trying to get one's head around such a frightening and mind-boggling concept may cause permament loss of higher brain function.
you guys didn't get the pacer or did you?
heres another one that will stop higher brain function, the fastest charger built in australia
had a
six cylinder
and was only 265 CI the hemi six-pack
it only did 14's but what can you do. it was faster than anything out of the pitiful australian automotive makers until 1990's (it was built in the 70's)
so warning aussie mopars may impair judgement and cause permanent paralysis in americans
lucas oil stabilisers.....i'll see if i can track it down

Funny you should say that...Because Crappy Tire doesn't carry it anymore. However Wal-mart DOES...Yes Wal-Mart carries Rislone, and Canadian Tire doesn't. Go figure. Anyways I use it every time I change my oil. A 1L container is about 5 bucks Canadian...so that equates to about $3.50 US, and the stuff DOES work...hell it has even helped the Celica, and that in its own is a miracle...the worst thing you can do to any car is not drive it, so please everybody go out and drive everythign you got, so that everything keeps lubricated. 8)
*drools*
Hemi /6 ... oh, we dream of such cars up and over to the left.
That was a Valiant Charger right? My Charger is the green one in my Avatar. It's the least desireable (of the true B-body Chargers, I don't count the Cordoba Charger or any 2.2/2.5 FWDs) one, the Coke bottle. It looks like a glass Coke bottle.
Haven't posted this pic on the new site yet 8)

Heh, and the Pacer we got was built by AMC. If you've ever seen Wayne's World ... that hideous blue monstrosity ... well, heh, maybe you didn't get the movie either

Heh, Hemi Pacer ... ew
I wonder if maybe you've got an exhaust manifold leak. I chased a very similar problem down in my Charger when I first got it. It sounded like it had a bad valve tick whenever you gave it gas ... bad. But as soon as you slowed to idle, it went away. It wasn't until I was about to pull the valvetrain out completely that we figured it out. It was a tiny tear in the exhaust manifold gasket.
haha at the pacer looks baddddddd, the pacer didn't take off as much as the charger here but was more of a bang for your buck type car it got similar engines to the charger but in a more sedan like body (but still 2 doors and probably smaller than the valiant charger)
here's what one looks like its not an oil painting but its okay

anyway if you want to check out some good info on australian valiants and chrysler cars check out

yeah it could be an exhaust manifold leak..... we were going to put some of that lucas oil stabiliser in then we decided to change the oil filter at the same time and found some idiot had tightened the filter tighter than head bolts because they had ****ed up the oil filter stud and squashed the threads thus had to tighten it mega tight to get the filter gasket to seal anyway we ordered another stud but the car is obviously out of action until we get that part :violin: . i think we might check out the gasket and the exhaust in general the previous owner had a few things done to the exhaust before just before the car was purchased, my friend has a good exhaust mechanic down the road but we'll check the gasket first that is if the lucas stuff doesn't fix it.

Now Thats car I could definately use...mmmmmmmmmmm Charger... *drools* 8)
Ah crap ... you know where it is, and you have a trailer.
Oh wait ... you also know that it's broken.
:finger:
That is so a Dart. Your Pacer. Uhm, that car in the picture you posted is identical to what was sold here as a Dart.
Granted your Pacer has just about every stripe package offered on cars here ... none of them Dodges though *lol*
W30 Olds Cutlass Hood treatment, Yenko SYC side stripe.
There's a guy in Toronto that actually imported a /6 Aussie Charger ... only one I've ever seen up close, with ... I can't remember the name of the company, Direct Connection is what it was called here, later Mopar ... but it was a specific to Australia Dodge-tuning company ... any way, it was all factory hop ups, and it was fast. I think he'd almost cracked the 12s.
Since it's your post we're plugging up with all this stuff, I don't feel too bad.
well aparently they are the same chassis wise as the dart a the front but From the cowl rearward, the car was all Australian-designed, with doors, roofline, quarter panels, backlight, trunk lid, bumpers, etc. it also came with 245 Hemi six instead of the 225 slant six after 1970.
Saw a charger on the road today on the road that i live on. mmmm sounds very very very nice, initially i thought it was a '67 camaro SS i saw a few weeks ago. sounded like a v8 but i don't know i've never really heard a worked over hemi six pack before so it could have been the 265.
rob mate,
try some oil treatment first, however if you have a f*cked lifter, like my torana did, there's not a treatment in the world that will stop it. Try the Nulon range, they are the best, but if it dont stop the tick, swap to the mech valve train. By the way, whats ya msn address, i am making a list of aussie S12 drivers for a site and want as many ppl as i can,
catch ya
Check your exhaust system. I have a similar sound as you have described, and I know my sound is coming from my cat, both seals are bad and I can't get new ones. Auto Bone dosen't carry them and there is'nt a Nissan dealer in the area of this shit town I live in. When I first found it I pulled the cat and coated both flanges with hi-temp black rtv, worked for a bit, guess the stuff came loose. But an oil treatment probably would'nt hurt in our aging power (I wish) houses either. Well there's my two cents...
