On my 200 there are what seems to sound like a pump of some sort making noise. Its coming from under the windshield wiper motor on the pasengers side of the car. There is also a small black tube coming from it that is not plugged into anything but when I plug it the pump sounds like it is under strain. It hasn't effected the running of the engine at all though. If anyone knows what this noise is please reply, thanks

Hmm i'm not sure whats there that runs on vacuum (i assume), maybe it's a vacuum switch? Can you get a pic of it?

theres a pump there with a harness (left hand top cornerof engine bay).Follow the pump and find the harness unplug the harness and then see if noise stops. or it can also be the windshield washer pump...

sounds like the vacuum pump is running constantly, which is a sure sign of a vacuum leak somewhere else in the system. Would also explain why your car's not running so good.

Turbo cars stop generating engine vacuum once in boost, so this pump is needed to provide additional vacuum to run accessories.

Find the vacuum leak and change the line.

this is your pump ... there's a rubber cover on the end that's been pulled off on mine, but same deal.

that red thing is the shock tower, just for reference.

yeah that is used to provide vacuum for the cruise control unit when the car is making boost. I just disconnected mine since I gutted the cruise anyway as it wasn't working and also my 240sx TB didn't have provisions for it.

^^ same here man...

The cruise control is also missing on mine. The whole box and everything is missing on mine. So this could also be a possibility that this is what it is causing it to run so ruff? We have had several mechanics look at the car. They all think that it has something to do with the distributor. We just replaced the cap and rotor a few days ago and it continues to run very ruff. We are stumped. We had a mechanic check the motor to see if it was sound and it was. Everything was in running order, the timing belt didn't skip, The timing is right so we dont know. Any other Ideas??????????Thanks

In that picture of the pump the boost sensor is under it. that little black line is the same line hanging off of mine. were does that little tube connect to your motor??

bubbaboostdate not saved · #9

Im talking about the line hanging directly over the pump.

uhm, any black rubber line like that is a vacuum line and needs to be connected.

I couldn't honestly tell you what that line was connected to. I've gutted all emissions and other vacuum goodies, so I wouldn't have the first clue where it goes.

For right now, if you have a vacuum line that's off, try and find out at least where it's coming from, then we might be able to point you where it goes.

Sounds to me though, that someone ripped off the cruise control and didn't plug the lines.

And judging by your other posts, it also sounds like you're 180º out on the distributor too.

We were just told by the previous owner that it is 180 out to but it doesnt run any other way. We also used one of the firing orders from someone on the website but it still wouldnt run. Then we reversed it by one plug and it started to run but really rough. Any Ideas?? I also want to thank all of you guys on the site for helping me so much.

Anyone know were i could find a rear driverside quarter window for a hatch back that is for sale????????????

ok the previous owner is an idiot.

If you have to 180º the distributor to get a car to run, it means your wires are on the wrong spot on the distributor cap. Maybe he got confused by the 8 plugs for 4 cylinders.

What's happening is you brought the firing order back to factory spec, but the distributor is off by 180º. Pretty much confirmed by the fact that moving the plug wires one spot made it run better.

Correct it. Just unbolt the distributor, pull it up, rotate the shaft 1/2 way (180º) and re install it.

I hate buying cars off guys like that. You spend all your time just bringing everything back to stock just to get it to run right.

Ok we will try tghat thanks. I will inform you on how it goes.
