Heya, does anyone with a disc rear end on a S12 (all you IRS guys) have a good handbrake, by good i mean can you lock the rears doing 60km/h. With my car being used for drift having a good handbrake will be usefull although i don't generally use it i still want it available in case i do want it. It holds the car on hills etc fine but won't work when the car is moving faster than 20 km/h or so. The cables feel a little crappy (stretchy feeling) so i might try getting new ones, other than that what pads etc might be a good idea?
Thanks :)

Disc rear end handbrake

Nebber my friend....mine doesn't even lock up at all! I'm having to pull it up all the way to like 8 clicks just so it doesn't roll backwards....lol.....yeh i would like it so i could lock it up.
Haha what sort of good are you then :P
J/K my old live axle car was somewhat like that to...
I guess mine was frozen. I pulled up on it a few times, and it snapped the bolts into the tranny tunnel.
I think in your case I'd just swap in a new cable.
The s12 has some chitty parkingbrakes if i were you i would modifie to hydralic parkingbrake like rally cars.
OOOOHHHH I like that sounds of that...do you have a link???

I learned that out the hard way..
walk into store and come outside only to see my car at the other end of the parking lot(not a big one) and into a bush
Not cheap though and not that easy really scene as i don't use it as my primary drifting technique it's prolly not worth the hassel of a hydralic hand brake. The S13 from what i have seen has a very similar rear brake and can be made to handbrake quite nicely, other than that i might look at going to R32 rears depending on how hard it is to get it on there (lazyness is a big factor here hehe)
Mine is excellent!
I locked mine at 80kp/h PLUS!
Im justa lucky bastard :mike:
This was at the UAS track day with stocko pads too :speakeng:
Yeah you just need to have good rear calipers and good pad thickness with newer rotors. Before I replaced my rotors on the back the parking brake wouldn't hold for anything but with new rotors and pads and the new rear cables and all that it works great. Also important to adjust it properly as well.

Bitch :P
Ok well as long as someone can do it, it means there is nothing wrong with the basic hardware, new cables i think might be the way to go, my rear rotors and pads are almost new, although they are only bendix somthingorother pads they should do.
The s13 uses drumbrake like parkingbrake thats why its so powerful and it does not fot the s12 :-(
I can lock my s13 everytime i try no matter speed.
About rally setup go to the yunkyard and get som smal singelcaliper calipers an one mastercylinder and bulid ;-) not as hard as it sound.
yeh i still got some good thickness left in my rear rotors but they are far from new! I think that may be my next thing i buy, new rear rotors.
LOL i even remember at one stage attempting a drift at 80ks then ripping up the handbrake, looked down to see my leg wasnt on the clutch :-? Didnt do much for my powerband or my slide
As well as new cables i'll probably extend the levers on the back of tha calipers slightly, give it a little more leverage even though i'll have a bit more lever travel the extra force should help
i just got my 2nd gazelle and it's SGL notch, it's got the IRS setup at the back but i have no idea if they come with a LSD too??
it will need alot work as it's an auto atm and i guess i will to convert it someday ..
you've probably got an open diff my friend.
Mine never locked at all until I did the rear brakes, But now it still needs to be pulle dup all the way just to hold it on a hill. Even then I make sure to leave it in gear as well. I tried to lock it at 20 km/h and it didnt do a thing.
Mine will only lock the passengers side. And thats in gravel. Plus it seems to have a little lag to it to when i pull it it takes a few seconds to lock. I have been relying on shift lock and clutch kicing to get the ass out as my front shocks are almost blown so feinting is out.
the main reason the e-brakes feel spongy is the light weight connection between the front cable and the rear cables. you could have a similar piece made of aircraft t-6 or better aluminum to splice the cables together ala the stock piece. pretty simple to make....might even be able to do it yourself with a drill press.... or go to a machine shop at a high school and show them the stock piece and see if they can make something from bar stock (steel).ONEOLDCOOT
Well, as for locking up the rears, I do it quite often. Although the technique is widely disputed, but the one i use is very effictive. All of you are concerned about locking up before turning (from what I hear) but what I do is quickly yank up on the lever at the beginning of your turn in which you intend to perform a controlled slide. Even though it is not as effictive as locking up before a turn, It works nonetheless. It it more effictive however, in a controlled 180 degree slide. But I have worked on this technique on dry pavement on all sorts of angles and speed. But I have an extreme lack of power due to my turbo being seized up, and also being at stock weight. I havent had the nerve yet to gut the car because I am not competing in anything... but I will soon become a force to be reconed with on the street!
Yeah I am gonna gut my car pretty soon and take my back seat out. Plus relocate the battery where the seat is now. But yeah i need to ajust the e-brake since it doesnt lock on pavement at all. Plus my rears seem to be engaged alittle more than normal all the time.
Turn brakes off of dune buggies will work for this. http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/buggy/tcbh/buggytcbh2.htm
Scroll down to the turn brakes.
probably no help, but someone someone had suggested replacing the handbrake cable after the y as a cheap maintenence/performance upgrade. Old fourms coffe shop "My Afternoon"
My handbrake's rear left cable decided to seize in the outter covering, locking the rear left calliper onto the disc, causing me to chomp a set of pads, destroy fuel economy and have granny's beating me! So i made a new cable for AUD$12, using a $4000 swaging machine and yachting 3mm stainless wire. WOrks a treat, i could lock them at 100k's if i wanted to now with the new aftermarket pads!
