does anyone know if a 86 (10/85) ecu will drive a 84 car? i am planning on looking at the one i found but i wanted to take my ecu with me. or does anyone have a 84 ecu they are not using that i could borrow to test the car (i want to save it because the body/interior are almost immaculate) they guy that is selling it ownded it since it was new and kept it up really well.

If they aer both turbo cars then yes it should work. The main differences is fact that the 86 has a speed limiter. the turbo ECU may not work on a N/A car because it may not recognise the MAF, also if you have a standard, and the other car is an automatic you may run into problems. Auto ECU's will work on standards, but not vise versa (I think). 8)

is the maf the only difference? if a ca20 guy wanted to switch to a turbo maf, could he swap in a turbo ecu and expect everything to work ok?

MAF, DET sensor, a few other things. I think the biggest problem would be the connectors, I'm pretty sure they're different.

The turbo ECU might run a different fuel map, not entirely sure.

Spencer ran a MKI ECu in his MKII (both turbo cars) and it worked fine.

The main differences between ECUs (MKI-MKII turbo at least) is the self diagnosis part. The earlier ones had 3 modes, vs the MKII's 5.

We'll say 86-ish. They say 86.5-88, but a few cars on either side of the cutoff ended up with parts from the other.

Yah like you said Matt, if you have the Turbo ECU, and MAF in a CA20 car the likelyhood is that it would run rich since there is no boost. But for testing purposes it may work. The easiest would be if the other car was a turbo as well, because then the computers probably would be able to be switched...8)

yeah the car is a turbo well that helps alot i think i will take my ecu tonight and test it
