I like the concept, but doing it may take a lot of time (meaning that unless you don't care if you wreck a set of lights it may take a lot of thought). If you were to gut out the inside of the lights, and just leave the clear on the outside, then use red plastic (jells from a lighting company would work) then seal around each one so that light only goes where you want it. It is very do able, and now I kinda want to do something like it... . Also are those lights that you have there from an RSX...they kinda look it...8)

I have the idea by using a rotozip and cut two circles of a diameter of about 3 1/2 inch. I already have those red molds, i found them at a nearby peb boys. The only problem is i have to absolutely sure i wanna do this or i'm gonna wreck a good set of tail lights...

If it works you can do it to the other set and sell them.

If you wanted an effect like in that photoshop pic, as in the light would look normal when they are unlit, but only the circles would light up (which I think is a great concept), it would be easy to do, all you would have to do is make opaque shields out of plastic or something similar, to mount behind the outer taillight surface. Between the outer plastic layer and the bulb carriers. They would have circular holes cut in them. And that should do it.

Why go to the trouble of making a black shield, etc. when you could just make two circular masks (cut out circles from a sheet of contact paper, for example) where you want the light to go through, stick them on the inside of the lens, and paint the rest of the inside of the lens black. Then peel away the mask and you have two circles that light passes through. You'd need several coats and you need to then be very careful about sealing the edges so no light leaks, but a friend of mine did this to his first-generation RX7 taillights and they came out pretty well for a $5 project :-D

I need some diagrams of this. I have these r33 skyline tail lites that have been sitting in my patio for two years. I need to move on.

i finally finished my conversion however, i need better quality pics of this so you guys can see. as soon as i can get my camera workin againa nd have time to post i will definatley show, but the way i did it is basically what it is thought. cut out two circular shapes( 3 1/2 diameter ) and place the lens covers over, two coats of paint and the clear coat. all in all it was a 20 dollar job. no prob... put some pics as soon as i get my camera workin again... dammit :violin:
