Strong smell of fuel when i took off my valve cover.. WTF?

The car has barely been driven since i picked it up a few weeks ago. I started replacing my timing belt last night and checked for shaft play on the turbo. I got home tonight and went to put on a new valve cover gasket while i had the charge pipe off.  I could smell a hint of gas the last few weeks and thought it was the seal on the gas tank or some that might have splashed onto the rear carpet as i had installed a new pump  (Old one is corroded and seized) and thought i will put a new one on after i pull and clean out the tank. When the valve cover came off it smelt like old stale gas :( the car has me stumped as i have never had this problem on any vehicle before..

It has good compression in the cylinders, new oil/ filter, new pump and fuel filter, newish turbo with no shaft play

I am going try to pull the EGR tonight and clean it  :cantlook: and maybe price a new head gasket and bolts

Any ideas are greatly appreciated as i googled and searched on here and found nothing outside of bikes and ATVs with similar problems and no listed solutions

Thanks!

I ran new oil, flushed it and ran more through as a flush... It was coming out clean, so i put on the new filter and put in good oil. now it seems to be dirty, not milky like a bad head gasket but it seems a bit thin uploading some pics :(

I have come down to thinking i might have a bad injector.. I have a thought that if it is always stuck open allowing fuel to drain from the pressurized line into the cylinder where it pools and slowly weeps into the oil pan past the rings... Got some running around to do then i will put it together and test my theory
