Ok I have this problem on my 87 mk2 you have to depress the clutch in order to start the car recently well today it decided it doesn't want to start that way. I want to know if anyone has bypassed this and if so how did you do it. I hate that you have to depress the clutch to start the car none of my other s12's had this except this one I'm guessing it's only in the mk2's.

Now before you ask my starter is good so there is no issue it seems to me like maybe something is wrong with the button but I don't want to fix it Just want to bypass it so I don't have to depress the clutch to start the car.

that's the neutral safety switch... can't you just cut it?

sideways_s12Nov 20, 2010, 11:43 pm · #3

I don't think so

You should be able to bypass it I would think. A guy I used to work with bypassed it on our work trucks so you could start without climbin into the cab. It was just a wire under the dash he re-routed.

yeah thats what I thought but i need to know which ones to mess with there's 2 plugs under there one for the switch (button) and another one that goes to the switch and up behind the dash....

NSS

Wire the two wires going to it together.
Ones for cruise, If I'm not mistaken.

Ok so the 2 wires that go to the switch wire those together?

Also I can hear a click when I have the key in the start position if I depress the clutch pedal if I go on and of the clutch you can hear it clicking
JayNov 21, 2010, 4:16 am · #8

The switch connects the two wires when you press the clutch. It's a Normally closed held open switch. So wiring the two wires together makes the car think the clutch is pressed. All the time
and
That clicking is the starter relay. Leads me to believe your NSS is fine. Especially if it's clicking as you depress and let go of the clutch.

Yeah iggy just told me the same thing he said it should be fine since I hear clicking. If that's the case wth is the problem then? I checked the starter gave it power from an outside source and it cranked, so I know for a fact it's not the starter so now I'm lost as to what it could be I'm gonna try an find my multimeter and see if it's not getting power somewhere. I swear I want to kick louie in the nuts for this crappy wiring job.

Also if I bypass the switch would that solve my problem? If I'm thinkin riht the problem would be between the wire that goes from the relay to the starter.....

Bingo

Thx for the help could there also be a problem in the ignition itself?

ProlowtoneNov 22, 2010, 11:19 pm · #12

Doubt it as you can have the power turned on to hear the Nss at work. You might have tried already but have you hit the starter, solenoid might have stuck. I also had problem similar to this on my jeep, found out my battery was toast in the end Sad

sideways_s12Nov 23, 2010, 1:35 am · #13

yeah that was the first thing I did just to make sure but the starter is def good and the batt is brand new and I believe is good.

So if the ignition is bad I wouldn't hear the click between the nss and the starter relay?  I'm just trying to narrow down what i need to look at so I can fix it quickly (if that's even possible) I don't like starting my car with a screwdriver my screwdriver is getting messed up and I'm sure it's not good for the starter...

MaxpowNov 23, 2010, 3:37 am · #14

Sure your starter solenoid is good? Had a problem very similar.

Nope, if your ignition wasn't working, the relay wouldn't go clicky. that clicky is it getting signal from the ignition, OK'd by the NSS.

The starter doesn't care where it gets it's power to start from. But your hands and screwdriver do
I went half a year starting my old CA20 with a screwdriver. All winter. It's partly what formed my hatred for the motor.
Had to be plugged into a block heater, and battery charger every night
Every morning, I had to spray ether in the intake and jump the starter with the screwdriver, occasionally wiggle the alternator plug
Wait 15 minutes for it warm up enough to drive without choking out
pray to god it didn't explode every time...
God I hate the ca20

Lol ok so then that narrows it down a lot thanks jay also when I start it with the screwdriver sometimes the starter just spins but doesn't engage but I never had that prob before

MaxpowNov 23, 2010, 3:59 am · #17

Yeah had the same problem man. Solenoid isn't engaging. Need a new solenoid.

Yes ^ and also check your starter signal wire that its not gummed up with oil and that its actually plugged in Wink

Ok with the help of iggy found the problem it turns out the relay is bad it wasn't makin a complete circut that's why we could hear the click but nuthing happened so we just jumped the plug for now until I get a relay from somewhere...

SlickS12Nov 25, 2010, 3:17 am · #20

If you need an extra, let me know what it looks like.  Ive got a spair se chassis harness...
