Okay so i've read other posts about bypassing the turbo, which is how i have been driving it, but last week i removed the turbo assembly completely because i finally got enough money to order a turbo for a replacement. Long story short i need to drive it soon and the turbo will not be here for a while since it is in customs, so do i have to go through the process of re-connecting the old T2(which i really don't want to do since it was a bitch getting it out) or can i just slap the manifold on and plug up the all of the oil and coolant lines? I know you don't need an 02 sensor since i have driven with it unplugged and i know it will be loud as heck so don't bother telling me to put a muffer or something, thats not crucial to running. I already have the spectre intake with MAF connection from autozone which is how i managed to bypass it in the first place. Please any help or knowledge will be appreciated. Thanks

You could do that, but besides being really loud, you will probably end up setting the engine bay on fire leaving the manifold open

See video
perfect example of how an engine doesn't exactly burn everything in the combustion stroke.
Turn volume down, it's loud.

haha holy crap, i guess i should put the old turbo back on, but if i ever got an extension for the manifold somehow, do i have to recirculate the oil lines or just plug the old lines up?

seishukuOct 25, 2010, 3:24 am · #5

You can cap the oil can coolant lines, no need to recirculate them. Just make sure you have them well sealed, cleaning up oil spray in the engine bay is no fun.

I see nothing wrong with that set up in the video.

Yea, you'd never get in a wreck, they hear you coming miles away! That was some funny shit, nothing like a bit of abuse to get you thru a Monday evening!

Ok returning it back to the technical question, why not just run a CA20E exhaust manifold?

Or, just bolt the turbo back in. It won't hurt anything if it isnt working.

MaxpowOct 26, 2010, 2:04 am · #9

It will hurt flow, when it doesn't work its a huge obstruction to the flow of air.

Huge Obstruction < Flaming S12 on side of road

Give me the obstruction any day. Won't hurt anything physically, but will cause severe mpg loss

yeah I've owned at least six turbocharged cars... a few times a seized turbo happened, and it was just a minor inconvenience, but Jay's right. Also, worrying about the airflow restriction is pointless since turbo engines have lower compression anyways, and if he's worried about restriction, he just needs to *replace* the turbo. Which he is doing. He should just keep the dead one inline so he can drive it in the meantime. Worrying about the airflow restriction before he swaps parts is like worrying that your ex-girlfriend doesn't like the color orange when you go to buy a new shirt.

Does Waylon (IggyEGuana) still do turbo repair? If so you might wanna see what it'll cost for him to patch it up for ya.

ArroOct 26, 2010, 2:59 am · #13

He ordered a turbo and it's on its way if I read his post right...

thanks for the advice guys, i think i will bolt on the old turbo with downpipe but will just plug up the oil and coolant lines. I can't hook the lines back up yet because i snapped them when taking the turbo out. I need to get some braided steel when the new turbo comes in.

Missed that. In that case leave that shit for the time being.
