I'll answer with more information, since Nissan fucking confused half the world market.

The Sentra chassis was used as the platform for the 90's "200SX". It's a front wheel drive chassis, basically a same-year Sentra with different front and rear bumpers, engines, etc.

It has absolutely nothing in common with any S-chassis incl. the S12.

The reason why Nissan chose to give it the "200SX" name is because "SX" was always assocated with 4-cylinder performance cars, and the "200" denotes the displacement (2.0 liters). The FWD "200SX" Sentra is a 2.0L version of the Sentra with better springs and a more sportier "look". The best version of that car was the 200SX SE version which came with a FWD SR20DE engine and a five speed manual.

None of which, again, will work with an S-chassis car like ours.

my theory is...sx = silvia experiment....or in the sentras case...sentra experiment. 200 of course means displacement...but i think that is why they put the stupid sx at the end...and then didnt realize it was a mistake..

DraconisOct 18, 2010, 6:32 pm · #11

When associating the '200sx' name with the Sentra, I believe it was with the B14 chassis (Sentra).  Nissan USA did it to boost sales.  The sales of the Sentra had slowed and in the past there was more success with alpha-numeric titles.  In general there is more success with alpha-numeric titles over names.

Also, when coming to the US, the dude from Japan responsible for sales and such over here in the US made the decision to change the name from Silvia (as it is known in Japan) to 200sx.  Besides the alpha-numeric title success, but he also made the assertion that a name like 'Silvia' was too feminine for the US market, which was also determined elsewhere.  Preventing a 'feminine' name from creating a loss of sales, it was then named 200sx.

they did that with the fairlady (Z) before the silvia came over...also the 2000 and 1600 roadsters are actually fairladys....but are named as displacement roadsters instead.

What he said ^^^

JayOct 20, 2010, 12:15 am · #21

Somewhat.....

Easiest way to say this is they're meant to stiffen chassis movement. Unless the bar is fixed and has no flex (I.E. NOT the cheap ebay ones with single bolts at the end), they don't really do much in the way of torsional flex. You know, the type that happens while cornering.

I really should get crackin on the one I was gonna make for y'all

ArroOct 20, 2010, 5:49 am · #22

Just copy Bart's mount plate designs. They fit perfect, and the dimensions were just right.

silvias121987Oct 20, 2010, 2:18 pm · #23

I RATHER JUST BUY FROM FROM BART BUT HE DOESNT SEEM TO BE MAKING ANYTHING ANYMORE

I laugh everytime I read that because i'm one of the only member with a BARTCO strut bar! Tongue

Its a bit convoluted at this point, theres what the X originally meant, and what it means today, so here goes:

The first car to use the 200SX moniker was the 1976 Silvia, chassis code S10 - OR - S+X
 (the Roman Numeral 10).

In 1978, Nissan replaced the 280Z with the 280ZX, realizing the X looked/sounded 'cool', and it was a heavier, more lu'X'ury oriented car (this is the Z-car people's take on the X) in other words, a GT (gran tourer), or cross (X) country

Since 1984 (the year of the Datsun-to-Nissan change) - the 'X' in both the Silvia and Z-car HAS denoted that a turbocharger in available somewhere in the model range
In 1981 Nissan included a turbocharger option for the 280ZX
In 1984 Nissan included a turbocharger option for the 200SX
and until 1996 had a turbocharged 300ZX (2000 in Japan as Fairlady Z)

(As an aside, Nissan uses the letters; R = Race tune, S = Street Tune, X = 'standard' or 'baseline' Sport tune. Remember the standard 4-lug 240SX was sold as an 'XE', the more performance oriented 5-lugger w/ LSD was sold as the 'SE')

Neither the 350Z or 370Z have a turbo option in the model range, and are much more "back to the basics" (the 350Z emerged from a reimagined 240Z concept car), no frills, minimal lu'X'ury or 'X'-country touring aspirations, sports cars, hence the 'X' was dropped

So it began as a Roman Numeral, and over time into the Nissan-era, changed into a sort of model trademark, a Japanese version of "GT" - "Gran Turismo" signifying sport & luxury, and/or the availability of a turbocharger

Summary? 200SX = 2.00litreSilvia10
but we already kinda knew that. . . Smiley

EDIT: and the Sentra "200SX" is THE abombination that screws up the whole system. 160BS is more like it!
