hello, i was interested on doing an SR swap because of aftermarket availability but i was wondering what can you do to the stock internals to handle more power in the CA18et i was gonna get a top mount and a t 25 from an sr. but does Ca det pistions give advantage and what about in jectors? i just wanna get my car on the road. I have the mugen coils for it and gauges i just wanna make 280 whp idea,s

280 outta the ca18et isnt outta the question....but to be honest the better bang for your buck will be swapping in an SR or even a CA (det).....then upgrade from there

unless youre looking to keep things original-ish

The single slammer is a good engine, and 280 is something very achievable
However, the CA18ET has a tendency to take things that are inside, and put those things outside of the block.

That said, lot's of things can be done. But there's always a sense of impending doom

Easily done with with a KA and some upgrades to it.

sideways_s12Jul 10, 2010, 2:24 am · #5

its not the pistons you have to worry about its the rods and det rods will work along with girdle or you can swap an det block in and put bolt the ca18et head to it but then you run into flow issues with the head not to mention the 2 small valves per cylinder if your gonna swap then swap but save the ca18et for me I love those damn motors lol I currently have 3 and am always looking for more...

fastback_silviaJul 10, 2010, 5:15 am · #6

in addition to the turbo upgrade and higher flow injectors (i think dsm 450s fit), install a higher flow fuel pump, larger diameter exhaust system, better MAF, and a good boost controller matched up with a ecu piggyback system.

you'll also want to switch to a ca20e intake manifold if you intend to run a front mounted intercooler, as it makes pipe routing slightly easier. good luck with the performance mods

RedneckJul 10, 2010, 5:50 am · #7

If your looking for 280whp the ca18et is not the way to go. Head flow sucks and it has a weak bottom end.

450's are not plug and play you need a custom rail or you can do my injector mod that worked fine for me till I got my fuel rail and if you get the ca20 intake manifold you'll need the ca20 rad pipe that comes out of the block right under the intake mani towards the front of the block. Ka24de xtd stage 2 clutch works with a bit of modification. Stock maf should be good for 250 I was on 8 psi on a big16g maf was at about 80 percent on stock boost also to tune get an safc there awesome lol

i wasnt 100% sure on the injectors, so thanks for the correction.

since the head doesnt flow well, then a home porting project should be part of the build up. its not a difficult process, just takes a bit of direction and understanding of what needs to be modified and how to do it without hurting the flow.

my only concern would be the long term reliability of the ET when its pushed into the 250hp range. while its significantly cheaper then a swap + mods, how well do they hold up after 6 months or a year? is it really worth it to mod the stock engine over swapping in a more potent  engine that only needs light massaging to get the desired power?

bennJul 10, 2010, 6:36 pm · #10

Ok sideways i have two motors and heads and intakes so i am prepared. but ia have heard you can put DET internals in the block and it is better off. or block, i have a water to air intercooler setup almost piced together, 190lph fuel pump what about DET injectors? FPR wideband. Clucth i dunno yet what i wanted is something that you can use and not a bitch the money i could rebiuld my motor and have all this done for half the cost of a swap.

I think the long term reliabiltity will be fine the only reason mine is down is because I have an electrical issuse and I'm waiting on funds to get megasquirt so I can eleviate that along with fully tune it. But I agree it will take a bit of rough love to get the desired hp 250 is is attainable hell I think 280 is attainable but now your in the upper limits of the motor.

To answer your question which I did earlier in the thread lol yes det stuff will work but if your going to do it just use the whole det bottomend there are uk guys that were pushing 300+ in the single cam with the det bottomend so you should be good there but like mentioned above in the thread the head will be your issue if you go to ipp.com they have a cam for the et that's a better spec than the euro cam and then you'll just have to worry about the head brething well enough to support anything above 300
fastback_silviaJul 10, 2010, 9:21 pm · #12

in addition to the hotter cam, do a port and polish as well as polishing the stock valves to allow better flow. value polishing is fairly easy, just put the stem of the valve into the chuck of a drill press and spin it at low speeds while lightly holding polishing grit sandpaper against the underside of the valve.

youre on your way to 280hp, just make sure you run a good management system and monitor your engine vitals to prevent any major problems from occuring.

bennJul 11, 2010, 11:24 pm · #13

Ok so if i get a DET bottom end and forge it polish head to death, boost controller wideband fpr pump install turbo install and DET injectors i should be good to go

sideways_s12Jul 12, 2010, 5:07 am · #14

Yes! lol

bennJul 12, 2010, 9:01 pm · #15

LOL ok just making sure. KK so how have you guys tuned afcs seem to be easiest. i dont have  funds for a haltech or standalone so idea`s.

sideways_s12Jul 12, 2010, 11:03 pm · #16

I use a safc2 but because the ecu isn't that smart its kind of a pain but it works just takes forever to get the afrs right lol but in the long run you'll want to go with megasquirt which I will be doing I was quoted 700 for everything and it comes built and has everything you'll need

You might wanna do some independent unbiased research on how much time and money a 280whp ca18et is really gonna take. There are hardly any members on this forum that are pushing over even 250whp on ca18et's consistently and reliably. Considering the fact the ca18et has been around since 1984 and is an original s12 motor why do you think that is? In your original post you say your "just trying to get your car on the road" yet you seem to be moving in the complete opposite direction with these outlandish 280whp ca18et plans.
sideways_s12Jul 13, 2010, 3:47 am · #18

My opinion is not biased and its been proven with the det block the uk guys have pushed 300+ in them and that's what he said he was gonna do get a det block and he's fine just because you had shit for luck with your ca and decided to swap doesn't mean you have to piss on everyone else plans

If benn is just trying to simply get his car "on the road" as he puts it a 280whp ca18et build doesn't seem practical and it definitely is not going to be quick or cheap. As for biased opinion, we are all biased to an extent. Every member who posted in this thread demonstrated that. This is why I recommended he do more researching to get a less biased opinion so he can make a better decision based on his overall situation. And of course a 280+whp ca18et is possible, I don't think anyone here said it wasn't.
fastback_silviaJul 13, 2010, 2:39 pm · #20

personally, i want both long term reliability and performance, so id try to start with an engine thats closer to my power needs. this way, im still making my power goal well within the engines limits and not having to worry about the thing turning into a WMD on the highway. for a car thats daily driven and occasionally tracked, reliability and performance should be the determining factors when it comes to modifications.

the last thing i wanna do is discourage people from building up any engine, so go with the ET and see how well it works for you. if it breaks down alot while you own it, then upgrade to something else and keep going.

Mr Amber ShadesEasily done with with a KA and some upgrades to it.

KAT ftw!

Strong internals.. good for like 300hp, right?

easy, and cheap! can be done for around a grand!

The also said something about if it was plausible to get 280 out of the ca so I went that route with it.

So its been a while and i have pulled my motor out have honed and decked the block pistons rings pins and rods are in forged det internals race bearings. Now i have lapped and port and polished the head gotta send it out to machine it. What is the easiest and most reliable injector mod i have an AFC so i know it has limits. and do i need the girddle before the pan goes back on. and does anyone know where to try and get a T25 from an SR there is nothing in the junk yards. or what would be equvilent?

sideways_s12Oct 7, 2010, 3:00 pm · #24

You don't necessarily need the girdle but it would help and there's gonna be some modification that's gonna have to be done to the oil pump tube to get it to fit right as far a t25g from an sr your gonna have to check ebay they will have a bunch or check nicoclub.com in the for sale section. They should be fairly cheap. Also you can get a blown one and have iggyeguana (he is a member on here) rebuild it for you he does good work at a good price.

Nice goin on the build so far glad someone else has decided to build the single cam as well. Also for injectors I was running 450's on my ca there's a write in my build thread on how to use them with the stock rail now arro may come in here and say don't do that but trust me it works and I never had a leaking issue. But if you have the money to get a custom rail made then do that instead.

bennOct 8, 2010, 8:10 am · #25

Thanks man thats awsome have to find the thread. i went and got a hks adjustable wastegate brand new gonna see if i can get SR injectors for free but dont know if they eill work? and i got my boost controller as well. ordered an ebay T25G for a SR20DET for 200 bux free shipping to me. and a water to air intercooler and kit for it. what do you guys think?

sideways_s12Oct 8, 2010, 8:34 am · #26

Looks like your heading in the right direction make sure you get a wideband and safc to tune it oh and also be sure not to overrev lol I did that once and dropped a valve in the number 3 piston lol that was fun hahaha
