im rebuilding my ca20e with a turbo aka ca20et using stock head, crank, cam, pistons, all rebuilt on the stock block, running megasquirt, and some 55lb 500cc injectors, walboro 255lph with a t30 with t25 adapter flange with no more than 7psi of boost, vmount intercooler, welded diff, can someone post some suggestions im getting the car to run is the objective im going to be drifting it, but i want it to last long with as little money as possible. any suggestions

JonBMay 3, 2010, 4:42 pm · #2

Yes. This is a very important step; Assemble it. HaHa I made funny.

No really though, it seems you got all the bases covered. Maybee a smaller turbo for faster spool. I don't know that your really chokeing a CA20 at 7 with a T25. Maybe, you maybe gaining a higher top HP number with the T3 but I don't know that it's worth a good mid-range torque thump. You maybe can do the math(but consider no one knows what the head flows); it's a bit much for me.

nismo_200sxMay 3, 2010, 4:45 pm · #3

yeah its an old volvo turbo though that was just rebuilt so its fairly new, it came stock on the a3000 i think audi or volvo but i made a flange so it cool, the housing it a little tiny bit bigger than a t25 perfectly equivalent to t28 but its a t30 housing its small to spool quick enough and still provide top end power too so its the double decker of awesomeness

This statement is an oxymoron like saying clean pollutants, dry water or cold heat. You can't expect an engine (especially a pathetically weak ca20e) to be reliable when you are drastically increasing cylinder pressure while cheeping out and cutting corners anywhere you can. According to your profile info you already have a ca18det in your s12. If that is the case a ca20et would be downgrading.

never put the ca18 in had some problems with the importer im done saving and stuff i need this car to run

In the awesomeness of a ca20et if you complete this... there is also a Aussie member that has a blue camo haych. Vids are on YouTube.....

EightySix200SXMay 4, 2010, 2:51 am · #8

Yea its pretty savvy sterlings black notch that thing spooled up fuckin fast talk about instantly in powerband (for a 20et) damn impresive... go for it dude!

nismo_200sxMay 4, 2010, 3:49 am · #9

im gonna run 7 lbs hopefully it doesnt blow up  im praying it doesnt

CandellanMay 4, 2010, 11:18 pm · #10

She'll be right mate. Those rods aren't as bad as they look as long as you look after them. Make sure you look at your cooling system & stick some good oil in.

nismo_200sxMay 5, 2010, 2:43 am · #11

thanks man im gonna use 10w30 redline oil and i just cleaned the radiator top to bottom since the engine isn't in the car yet, flushed it out and picked out the dirt

CandellanMay 5, 2010, 2:53 am · #12

Get that puppy pressure & flow tested. Cooling is THE most important part of these motors.

Why is there always a hater? What is every ones problem with the ca20? Understand its not a fast motor i get that. But what is so wrong with them? every one just bashes them all the time but truth be told i beat the hell outta mine and it still comes back for more. and my car has 200,xxx +. I dont see a problem at all with it. Good luck on you build hope it works out

You answered the question before you asked it.

Not that I hate the motor, its a great reliable platform, but it just lacks the cajones a race motor should have.

Phisherman pretty much summed it up. 68whp, 81lb/ft. Its a sorry motor.
86foreverNov 21, 2010, 3:05 am · #17

but i ca20e could be good motor if you but your minds together and money! come on guys! No wait! who am i kidding! your right .

Been running a CA20 a 7psi forever and ever and ever and ever and ever. Nearly every day, hot summers, snowy winters. It's fine, no detonation it'll go forever (knocks on wood).

Things seemingly fail from age on a 25yr old car alot faster and more frequintly a 7psi CA20 will grenade.

Alright well my grandfather had taken apart half of my engine to get to my crankshaft, and didnt label any bolts or hoses. im pretty sure i can identify where the bolts go, but where the hell do all of these hoses go too! he said he was going to replace them and never did. so ive got new hose, and no idea on where to place them

Colonel GustardNov 22, 2010, 11:53 pm · #21

pics of the hoses would help identifying them

update: bought a ca18det rebuilt with eagle rods and cp pistons turned crank t25 sr turbo 300zx downpipe flange setup to open sidepipe turbo back, setup a jdm sport fmic with hks ssqv limited edition, walbro fuel pump 255lph, oil cooler freddy, nrg steering wheel with hub, tons more stuff its already in the car just did a battery relocation, just need 200 bucks for an optima battery and some redline trans fluid engine oil and some gas im running it on a tuned blitz ecu for 91 octane

86foreverNov 24, 2010, 6:48 am · #24

so no ca18/20dt :(

imtheguy247Nov 26, 2010, 11:46 pm · #25

Alright well i have the camshaft in (Big thanks to Maxpow!) and now i need help with what outlets and inlets are suppose to be connected. Can someone take pictures of the front of the ca20e engine block? i need to know which houses should go where. Like from the intake manifold to where, etc etc. Thanks lots!

nismo_200sxDec 1, 2010, 11:41 pm · #26

ca18det yes lol the thing i hate about s12's is you have to hybridize everythingggg argh! im just gonna switch to entire s13 suspension, subframe, crossmember and be done with lack of aftermarket support

If I get that right, you are trying to use ca18 piston and rod in a ca20 block...

first, bore is different... the ca20 is overbored 1.5mm compared to the ca18 (84.5mm vs 83mm) if you got a special order for oversize piston, then you are good...

second, the stroke is also different 83.6mm vs 88mm...

if both blocks were the same height, you'd have to have rods 2.2mm shorter in the ca20, but... the ca20 block is taller than the ca18 block by more than 2.2mm... more like 10mm so the fact is that the ca20 rods are longer than the ca18 ones...

overall, you cannot use ca18 rods in a ca20 block... since the ca18 rod are shorter than the ca20 one, you'll end up with not enough compression to start the engine (I don't have the CC of the combustion chamber nor the difference in length of both rods, but using a baseline of 58cc, if you use a rods that is 5mm shorter in the ca20 (and the difference is probably more between ca18 and ca20 rods) you'll end up with a compression ratio of ~5.75:1
SlickS12Dec 2, 2010, 2:08 am · #28

Ok, so that means you use the biggest turbo you can find.  You'd never have problems overboosting then, haha. ( disregard the useless post).

Maybe I'll add something relevant

My take on it is if you were going to spend the cash for new intervals, maybe even forged pistons, why not do it for a more capable motor platform?  Ka? Na sr then boost?

imtheguy247Dec 2, 2010, 2:47 am · #29

Alright well im not to smart with cars and i had to replace my camshaft. Well got the damn thing in, and i have a couple of lines, that i have no clue where to put. Can you please help?? Thanks!

Phisherman09Dec 2, 2010, 3:15 am · #30

um

the "outlet under the intake manifold" is for a coolant line.

the dizzy should have a vacuum line going to it, i think one of those two nipples under the TB

coolant temp sensor goes in that hole iirc.

imtheguy247Dec 2, 2010, 3:19 am · #31

haha well wtf. i dont know if i have a coolant temp sensor? lol and sorry for being car-tarted. And we had to take the dizzy of to see why the rotor wasnt moving. We removed all lines to get to it. And do you know where that coolant line goes to?

nismo_200sxDec 3, 2010, 12:50 am · #32

actually i bought a completely new engine set. ca18det with cp pistons eagle rods, no ca20 all my ca20/18et parts are for sale cheap cheap i just want them gone

imtheguy247Dec 3, 2010, 3:42 am · #33

Any 1? Can someone just take a picture of the distributor vaccuum line and where it goes, and the two wires with like 2 more coming of of them inbetween the intake manifold and the cylinder head? Thanks!
