hey everyone, ive been wanting to change my gear oil in my tranny and my diff and i was wondering what kind of gear oil i should use, im not looking to spend alot because im short on cash. I was thinking some penzoil synchromesh for the tranny and diff.

seishukuJan 14, 2010, 5:33 am · #2

Use only synchromesh oil in the trans, the diff doesn't care though.

I use the Penzoil stuff.

+1, ive had it in my trans for a while too, no issues.  Its the one I'd suggest for cheapness.  Its cheaper than any redline gear oil could ever consider being.

Anyone use the purple stuff?  Results?

You said cheap so anything with a GL-4 rating for the tranny and GL-5 for the diff, unless LSD equipped. GL-4 and GL-5 are not interchangeable. If someone tells you that the stronger scuff resistance GL-5 is better than GL-4 in your tranny run the other way.

Royal Purple Claims: "Meets both GL-4 and GL-5 performance requirements."

I have heard that newer oils in the past that had claimed to meet GL-4 (older spec) had corrosion issues with the Brass syncro/balc rings, I have also heard that this initial hick-up in the re-formulated oils has been fixed.  Beuller?

Like I asked before, anyone use the purple stuff recently?  Does it perform well?

I'd be interested to know anyone's ideas on trans oil, as well.  I used Redline in my S12, and it was good for a little while, but then the syncros degraded anyway on 2nd and 3rd.

I'm looking at changing the trans oil in my 100K B14 SE-R, and I'm wondering what the best option would be.

Do not use syncromesh in a Nissan tranny that calls for gl-4. Syncromesh is the equevalant to 30w oil.
I suggest you find a true gl-4 gear lube.  It'll be cheaper and better than syncro. I'm using royal purple, but you can go to napa and get Sta-Lube gl-4 fairly cheap.

I already got the Synchromesh in my tranny, it does feel a bit smotther but not much of a difference.

Huh..? It's a 75w90, and I know for a fact it's the same thickness as any other 75w90.

*shrug* Whatever... I've been using it since I got my S12, it's been fine. I don't blame the very common bearing whine on that, which started in the past year (I think), as the trans has 160k miles on it and I abuse it a lot.

All I know is that last year when I finally got around swapping trannys, A bud of mine steered me to the syncromesh. When I drove it for a couple of days, I heard alot of noise from the tranny. After researching this, I opted to return to GL-4. I'm now using the Purple Power and NO MORE NOISE. If you do the research, there is much debate on using this in Nissan transmissions that call for GL-4.

Hey Blue

Are you speaking of the Royal Purple product, when you say you are using the Purple Power?  What weight are you using?

Unfortunately the focus seems to be more towards the ATF crowd.

I have had at least 250 whp and been running lucas gl-5 for 5 years with no problem. Also flat shifting is not uncommon for me to do.  Are you guys serious about the gl-4 or is it a wives tale? I'd like further explaination.

Depending on where you go for the info there seems to have been a problem with GL-5 (when it was introduced) that made it corrosive to some synchro parts, namely the brass bits. However, this is supposed to be resolved.

By "Flat Shifting" do you mean, not using the clutch?  I too have done this but mostly on up-shifts.

I use oil "Kennol 75W90" synchromesh compatible, norm GL-4 GL-5

the S12 has the cheap stuff because well it is cheap, but the SE-R I use Royal Purple with Lucas stabilizer.  The car also had the third syncro starting to make some noise at the track, which has since gone.  its been in there for a good 30,000kms now and the only down side is stiffer shifting until you drive the car for 5-10 minutes.  But it is also - temperatures here which is contributing to it. in the summer you can hardly tell when the tranny is cold shift wise.

Where would Honda MTF (manual transmission Fluid) fall in all this?  I got a lot of that stuff laying around not being used fast enough.

Dont ask how I acquired so much to the point im considering how a nissan might like a honda brand lol.

seishukuFeb 28, 2010, 9:59 pm · #23

Don't most Hondas use 10w30 for the manual trans?

Mr Amber ShadesMar 1, 2010, 2:55 am · #24

thats widely debated, especially with the older ones (88-95).

Honda MTF made/distributed by Honda is overall the preferred stuff honda guys love.  Im a honda guy (turning into a nissan guy too) so id like to maybe devise the possibility of using the same stuff in 2 completely different cars

I believe so. my friends 01 Civic took 10w-40 in the tranny
EternalSwapMar 2, 2010, 2:22 am · #26

my 95 accord took 10 40 or 10 30 or something
