a possible epic win storm brewing here..

ka truck trans are shorter?? hmm

brewster240Sep 22, 2009, 2:55 am · #6

z24 trucks have the same trans too david. (old datsun/nissan 720, and the early d21 hardbody)

ka swaps without having to use any s13 drive shaft pieces?

Its probably too short for that. the shifter is near 7 inches farther forward than the S13 swap. Putting it about where the front of of the shifter hole is.
DjayS12Sep 22, 2009, 6:25 am · #9

possibility of having a ka swapped closer to the firewall than before for weight distribution?

looks like a lot of work for a little benefit!

RedneckSep 22, 2009, 6:34 am · #10

Yeah not really getting where the potential in this is. If the s13 c tranny is 31.5 inches then the s12's tranny should be roughly 29.5 inches since you need to cut the shifter area back about 2 inches to make it fit right? So the truck tranny should sit 4 inches closer to the firewall than the stock shifter that is already too far forward for most peoples liking anyway. Based on those measurements it seems like the shifter would basically be where the radio goes. I must be missing something though because I am sure you are already aware of this.

Just a random question, does anyone know if the S13 "C" gears will swap over to the S12 "C" shaft/casing? I know the bearings, syncros and all that are the same because the rebuild kit is the same for both trans. I'm debating about making a DET trans inside an S12 case so I don't have to cut my trans tunnel. My trans grinds at 6.5k+ shifts into 2nd and sometimes third so I'm going to rebuild it sometime next year anyway. I'm only doing research in the meantime.

XanoSep 22, 2009, 9:00 am · #12

my trans wont let me put it into 3rd sometimes...it feels like it hits a damn wall.

EternalSwapSep 22, 2009, 10:33 am · #13

if all the bearings and shiz are the same, i dont see why the gears wont work, unless theyre physically longer/ wider to accept like more power or something.

mod_mastazSep 23, 2009, 10:31 am · #14

Hrm. I'll talk to Justin and have him cross-reference part numbers. I do know the gear ratios are taller on the S13 C trans vs the S12 C trans.

we are simply trying to compile a list of different nissan transmissions, and what engines they fit.

not saying to use x trans in your car, just providing accurate info to what is available for peoples reference.

turbo vg with a longer trans?
datzenmikeSep 25, 2009, 1:08 am · #18
brewster240z24 trucks have the same trans too david. (old datsun/nissan 720, and the early d21 hardbody)

All standard tranny 720 trucks ('80-'86.5) used the FS5W71B 5spd or the F4W71B 4 spd. Neither of these trannys were used in the D-21 Hardbody ('86.5 and on) The D-21 used the FS5W71C type 5spd. with the Z24i, KA and VG motors. The FS5W71B from the 720 is usually 31.5" long from front to driveshaft. Some 720 trucks used a 26.3" long 5 spd. The FS5W71C type is at least an inch and a half longer than the B type. The shorter of the two trannys in the picture above is probably from a D21.

The FS5W71B from a 720 Z24 motor will bolt to a KA24E or the other way around. (length is different, all B type are shorter than the C type)
brewster240Sep 25, 2009, 5:04 am · #19

well then someone must have switched both 720s at my local pick and pull to c trans before they junked them.

David BSep 25, 2009, 5:07 am · #20

can a mod, clean this up, post them in the first post, and label them in ordeR?? then sticky dis?

Which one?

BW T-5 or FS5R30A?

r30.

brewster240well then someone must have switched both 720s at my local pick and pull to c trans before they junked them.

Check again.

'80-'86.5 720s had dual headlights on each side. D-21 Hardbodys '86.5 an up, have single headlights. Look for the aluminum tag below the pass side hood hinge on the inner fender. If a 720 it will say something like KYN720, if a Hardbody VHYD21 at the very top. At the very bottom it will list the tranny installed FS5W71B for 720 and FS5W71C for Hardbody.

No offense brewster. Generally 720 never used the C tranny but some very late ones did get the Z24i with the D-21 throttle body injection that is not even in the '86 FSM. Possibly the C was installed along with them as well?
