Witch tranny is the best way to go? would a 5spd be better or 6 spd? I dont really wanna race the 1/4 mile with it i just want to know witch would be the best way to go about it?

LeegamerJul 7, 2009, 12:34 am · #2

Depends on gearing and the powerband of the motor.

Josh19862drJul 7, 2009, 3:23 am · #3

so depending on the gearing a 5spd would be as good as a 6

DjayS12Jul 7, 2009, 3:45 am · #4

And since you got a CA20E there is no really 6 speed option without a good amount of custom work!

This is sorta like asking, "4-cylinder or Hybrid electric?"

If you're asking this -- and I mean no offense -- you have more to learn about driving. A sixth speed isn't necessarily "better". In most cases, a 5-speed is simpler when constantly changing gears on a road circuit, for example.

6 spd for a highway car and 5 spd for daily driven through the city

Soz if it's been asked but I searched and didn't find much. I have what appears to be the C trans in my late mk2. I hear the bellhousing on CA, SR  and KA 'boxes are the removeable type ? So the stock trans can mate to any of the other s-body engines, given the appropiate bellhousing ?

Also has anybody had problems mating a FWD SR20DE with a RWD SR 'box/bellhousing ?

EightySix200SXJul 7, 2009, 11:08 pm · #8

FWD SR20DE will have the distributor in the rear (or side as fwd) when u switch the direction to rwd format the distributor wont let the motor sit properly. not to mention the intake manifoldas are diferent. it will smash into the firewall. unless ur using a fwd bottom end with a rwd head???

CamInHeadJul 8, 2009, 10:54 am · #9

The UK never got any RWD n/a engines save for super rare FJ S12s and 4WDs that are 99% diesel.

If it's things like dizzy and plenum that wouldn't be a huge problem.

and some really good drag cars use..... 2 speed automatic transmissions... go figure!!!!

6 speed = no bueno for the track... you dont want too many shifts, too much chance for inconsistent runs

nismologistJul 9, 2009, 8:39 am · #11

5 spd for the win

EightySix200SXJul 9, 2009, 2:06 pm · #12

5 spd. yea for track thats why alot of ppl use 2spd power glides i assume...

rageJul 9, 2009, 6:48 pm · #13

6spds are nice if you have a narrow powerband, so you always have power, plus shorter gearing can be nice for acceleration if you dont mind shifting a bit more.

For all out Funny Car a 2 spd Powerglide (or any automatic) accelerates through the gears and the gear changes. Even if you 'power shift' and it takes .25 second per shift you loose up to a second of full acceleration while rowing through the gears on a 5spd. Of course we are talking straight line 1/4 mile here with multi thousand hp motors in front of the automatic. Also there is less chance of tearing the tires loose with every shift. Basically with unlimited hp, and if all you do is aim the car, go automatic.

For auto-X with variable speeds and short sprints (and only multi hundred hp engines) a 5 (or 6) speed would be better than an automatic if for no other reason than engine breaking and more fun to drive. In this instance if you drive the car, go 5 or 6 spd.

Corvettes use 6 speeds on the track. I imagine if they are inconsistent, they make up for it by posting faster lap times then a 5 spd.

The only six-speed that came on a silvia powertrain was in the S15 and it's notoriously weak. Most S15 tuners swap in an S13 or S14 trans and are done with it.

It's a bit misleading. The 'bell' isn't actually removable. It's not as simple as undoing 5-6 bolts and swapping it. The 'bell' and the front case half on the RWD FS5W71C is cast in one piece. To swap it, you have to drain and partially dismantle the transmission to do so.

Yes the CA/KA/VG FS5W71C front cases can be swapped. With some work a Z and an L series FS5W71B case can also be swapped onto it.

...and viola:

Sure they did, they got SR20DE, mine came out of a LHD German S14 (ok, not exactly UK, but at least Europe).

That doesn't change the fact that FWD SRs have a different bell housing bolt pattern, and different engine mount bolt positions.

indeed, if it were as easy as bolting on accessories, and new manifolds, everyone would be doing it, hell i would have. they also use a smaller 220mm flywheel too. now i know you can mate a sr20 fwd head to a rwd block (see rwd sr20ve)

what? you can?

dude i have a sr20det block/head

i should get a sr20de head from the yard and make a sweet na sr

Yeah Germany, England more or less the same eh ?

Presumeably you'd also need n/a pistions and maybe even rods for a decent c/r.
TBH I think this a non-starter for me.

whats wrong with the current head? the swap is still more trouble than its worth

Pipedream B is a supercharged CA18DET. Yeah less powerful than a turbo but I don't care.

Actually I believe it's a 215mm clutch sisc with 450kg pressure plate.

Whatever.

The heads swap, but it'll still put the distributor into the firewall, unless you want to mount the engine farther forward, pocket the firewall, AND run a 20V SR CAS and run with coilpacks.

Bottom line is that it's not remotely worth the trouble (unless it's a VE head, then maybe), and you can pick up a used RWD SR block or head for peanuts on most Nissan forums.

yep, anything 20v is rare as shit as it is
