Hi, I just spent a few hrs in search land trying to locate some info on synchro rings. If I've overlooked the answer I do apologize in advance. If you can direct me to the proper post I would appreciate it.
I have a Z24 engine in my 620 4X4 and am currently using the FS5W71B from an early S11. Recently I acquired an '85 CA18ET tranny and would like swap the front case with a Z24 tranny to use it, as it's the same length as the one I am now using.
I know the 85 FS5W71B has the larger counter bearing and 1st/2nd shift rod just like the FS5W71C after '86. Does anyone know if the '85 CA18ET 5spd has the same double steel synchro on 1st and 2nd gears like the FS5W71C???
Maybe someone can tell by looking??

S12 'b' Synchros Vs. S12 'c' Synchros
honestly I dont know that even one person here has opened their tranny to that extent, so we may not be able to help ya unfortunately.
And if there has been someone, sorry to overlook you, no offence meant.
Most of us will just find and swap the entire tranny instead of tearing apart the bad trans.
One thing you may be able to do, have you attempted to swap the Z24 bellhousing off your current B trans onto the new B trans? it should work without issues if I'm not mistaken.

youre nuts for dismantling a trans.i highly believe no one here knows what youre asking about because none of us have done that.lol
I've had my trans down to that point when I swapped the bell housing, but I didn't take any pics.
the 85 has a ca71"B" tranny. so if you go by the fact of its a B not a C tranny, it may not.
According to FAST, the 1st/2nd synchros have the same part number between B and C trans, so it should be the same.
A friend swapped the 'C' synchro into his 'B' tranny and raves about it. It's supposed to have a Porche (servo) steel syncro and not the usual Warner brass type. Porche (servo) steel were used in the Roadster competition FS5C71A box many years ago.
Unfortunately the S-11 (Z20E) 'B' type I have in now is obviously pre '84 and has the 58mm counter bearing so the front case isn't a direct swap. I realize I need a Z24 tranny for the correct 'bell' bearing hole size. The one I have now works fine but I would swap the S-12 turbo one in IF it has this (alleged) syncro and for the lower first and wide ratio gears.
Well the search goes on and I'd like to thank you all very much for your replies. If and when I find out i'll post the details. Great little site, will take weeks to read through this great tech section. Thanks again,
datzenmike
