I am planing to do a engine swap in my 86 Nissan 200sx coupe. I was thinking a ca18de out of a Nissan pulsar. Would it be worth doing
Ca18de
no.
ca18det - yes
s12god @ Jan 4 2009, 03:15 AM
ca18det - yes
CA18de - no
fixed
EDIT: I could have sworn i replied to this thread ???
brewster240 @ Jan 4 2009, 08:09 AM
no.
y? ya the det has more power but allso cost more to
cause the ends does not justify the means.
jed @ Jan 4 2009, 03:24 AM
y?
because it only has 130hp at the crank compared to you're CA20E's 103 hp, you're only getting a 27hp upgrade and paying like 400 - 500 dollars for it.
with 400 - 500 $$$ you can buy something better like a SR20DE or a KA24DE/E
well, what are you looking to get out of a engine swap? in other whats what do you want out of the engine? response? power? torque? economy?

a little of both. i am geting the moter for 100 bucks.
I've been considering this, but you'll need the motor, entire engine harness and ALL attached sensors, and of course the computer. its doable, but no one has done it because KA's are much more common and can yield higher results. the CA18DE might get better mpgs than a ka tho.
if your 100dollar engine came with everything, and you had the time, then maybe, otherwise a KA is probably a better option.
you will need a lot of parts just to convert the ff 18de to rwd...it isnt worth it.
yeah?
what about a clutch?
flywheel?
exhaust manifold?
oil pan?
p/s setup?
who's gonna do the wiring? ecu?
etc etc etc

a kid did it a few years ago against everyone's advice on nico. i sold him some parts.
then after it was all done, he spent more then just buying a ca18det swap, and still had the crappy usdm rods and pistons.

the pulsar is a 5spd. And a budy of mine is going to billd a header for it. and my budy
has the det in his s13 and he has a oil pan.
...you cant use the pulsar trans in the s12.....

...you cant use the pulsar trans in the s12.....
This is troof, but you can use a S12 C tranny on a ca18de fwd right? or no?
yes, but then you run into clutch/flywheel problems.
the fwd flywheel will not work with a rwd transmission, and the sohc flywheel will not bolt to the dohc crank.
so you would have to locate a rwd de/det flywheel.
or do the sr flywheel/clutch swap.
yeah, read the post above.
brewster240 @ Jan 4 2009, 09:27 AM
yeah, read the post above.
someone on nico_club sed that i can use the flywheel from the ca20e with ca18de. i dont
think that is right. is it?
not, it is not right.
the dohc flywheel will not interchange with the sohc flywheel, like i said in the post above.
its spelled truth....download firefox, it has a built in spell check...geeze.

Ok where would i find a rwd flywheel for a de?

i would think a rwd det flywheel would work...i would try nico...but really all of this trouble just isnt worth it.

would ka swap be worth doing
yes, and it would be easier/cheaper...if you go ca18de...you have to go ca18det for it to really be worth the hassle. But the ka is cheap, easy to find parts for, is reliable, and has good torque.

what trans would i use?

do you have auto or manual? if you want to daily drive and stuff get a automatic ka24de/e they go for like literally free - 400 dollars depending on the seller. but thats a FULL swap ECU, wiring, transmission, engine everything you'd need.
but you have to buy extra parts. For one you're old motor mounts won't work and if you have a MK1.5 - MKI you're going to need to fad up something for the transmission.
you should do research on it, honestly... my mistake was i jumped head first into the swap without thinking about everything i need. just did it I didn't think about how complicated it could get and didn't research.

ok i want to stick with the 5spd becuz i like to go drifting.but the wiring im not sur about. and would i have to use the drive line form a s13

CA18DET FTMFW. just do that and weld your diff .... you'll even be JDM tyte,yo.

i have a welded diff but whant more power

how much power do you want??
18det has 180ish stock, put on a t28,some injectors, turn up the boost and a good tune and youll be around 250 maybe more... thats more than enough power unless your tryin to make a 10 second drag car or somethin.
KA's run 150ish? for horsepower. a n/a build can get you to 200 or so, but from what ive read, that can get expensive. turbo will also but you at about 200 or so.
aside from drag racing...handling>power
if you go 18det you can use your stock transmission and driveline, but you need to use the 18det flywheel, the 20e and 18et flywheel wont work and the starters wont work either.

im not in to drag racing i like sliding thoo a corner at 30mph. And im not in to turbo setups. if i did a ka swap could i use the driveline that is in my car or would i have to get one out of a s13?

from what i read on a page in nico Ka's are only good 200hp n/a after that it becomes a up hill struggle for more n/a power.

Im gone for a little while and you all have Jeff SUGGESTING someone buy a SR20DE? Please tell me he wasnt tied to a chair shirt off with battery cables hooked to his nipples forced to repeat "JEFFWINS SR20 - JEFFWINS SR20 - JEFFWINS SR20"
sorry for thread jack but sometimes things happen you just dont expect

hahahah holy shit im almost got kicked out of my computer class cuz i laughed so hard at that lol.gif lol.gif
to try to stray back on topic.... either a KA(preferably boosted imo) or a 18det will be just dandy for drifting. i like the 18 pesonally cuz it revs to the sky. gets plenty slideways stock.
theres advantages to both,KA's are cheaper of course. s13 driveshafts are almost a must on any swap. wiring is simple for both, the KA you dont need to add any relays as needed in the 18det, but its not hard at all if you know what your doing.

dude, go do some reading and come back with specific questions.
have you even read anything on here?
who said anything about drag racing?
30mph? whoa doggy dk in the house.

i asked him if he was goin drag racing cuz from what i understand, he believes a KA or a twin cam CA doesnt have enough power to drift..
drifting is more about handling and driver skill.than power. not to brag or anything, but i can drift my ca20e better than some guys who put sr20's in there 240's and automatically think there drifting gods..
yeah thanks
stock single cam with a welded diff.
my point was, take some initiative and do some reading before asking simple questions that have anwers readily available.
people, especially n00bs, always make the same mistake. They ask questions and assume that their questions have never been asked/discussed before.
i am just trying to figur out what engine swap would be worth doing cuz i cant drive my car untell i get a new engine.
