Turbo Spoiler Thought

is there anything i can do to the turbo sponge/cat hair collector sitting on the back of my car? i was wondering if i could maybe finish the spoiler in some way that would cover over the exterior sponginess. i have my doubts as the thing is literally a sponge so it seems like it would absorb anything i tried to coat it with... damn the 80s!

just wondering if anyone else had given the thought of salvaging the spoilers rather than replacing them.

you ever heard of Plastidip? you use it to coat the handles of tools and stuff. its a tough rubbery/plasic coating that goes on liquid and then hardens. Unless I'm mistaken they make it in a spray can version now. I'm curious whether that would turn out well.

Just get a fiberglass wing from an SE, and tack on the turbo badges.

well if I can get a turbo wing I was gonna make fiberglass mold of it so it can be molded to the car it would sick imo kinda like the whaletale for the ae86 but more subtle

nismologistSep 22, 2008, 8:52 pm · #6

that would be fat as hell

I thought so too

Turbo wing and SE(came on a lot of MK2 hatches actually) wing are shaped completly different.  IMO Turbo wing looks much better.

And yes you should repair any damage to it (platic epoxy or something like that might work) and then fiberglass mold it.  You could even change the shape of it prior to setting the mold.  Longer off the back would be sick.  DO IT! lol

Or snub it up like the Euro foam wings...

So good

I might be trying to put an SE wing on something non S12

Yeah you and I are in the minority, more often people want the later one with the brake light. But I'm with you.

I have a fiberglass wing on my MK1 hatch. It is definitely not a SE wing. I compared my turbo wing and my SE wing when I still had it and they are definitely not the same dimensions wise. Maybe I got lucky and someone bought a replacement back in the day.

yeah that's exactly what happened. It wasn't until 86 1/2 year cars (or what we call "Mark 1.5") that they got the fiberglass ones. Someone swapped your turbo one.

If someone tries that plastic dip crap, let us know how it turns out WITH PICS!

you dont need to make a mold to blend it to the car all you use is kitty hair bondo thats the stuff shops use to blend in body kits

I think Jason isn't sure how the foam rubber will react to it... these old foam rubber spoilers are all porous and absorb shit. Maybe that will be better for the process, maybe worse.

My Mk2 wing is fiberglass... I have a few scratches some of the mounting holes got stripped (hatch lid screws underneath), and there was clearly glass fibers exposed...
