CA18DET can be had for 900 - 1,400 (complete swap) and it's all bolt on except for the tranny i think.

now if you wanna take time and go with custom fab the RB20DET goes for about the same price and is 210hp on 9psi i think. (complete swap)

the 18DET though has alot of potential though, the RB'S head flow is based on the CA18DET'S head flow, thats how good it was.

you could go with a SR but your looking at 2,000 - 2,500 for a SR  (complete swap)

oooooor you can go KA24DE and then turbo it with left over money. they can go for 200 - 500 (complete swap but it depends.) and they have globs of torque
seishukuAug 30, 2008, 2:00 pm · #3

SR20DE, and turbo it later. Stock SR20DE (S14 anyhow) with intake and exhaust will have about the same power as a stock CA18DET, and usually costs $800 for a full swap.
Problem is finding one.

Otherwise, KA!

JulieAug 30, 2008, 2:09 pm · #4

dont sr20de's have a higher compression ratio pistons vs the turbo model? honestly, just got with a turbo SR since it will cost MORE to turbo a non turbo model then to just buy one thats already equiped with one

seishukuAug 30, 2008, 2:28 pm · #5

Yeah, so?  No different than turbocharging a KA.

I went about $1200 all together... And I had to buy a flywheel and bellhousing, and a used turbo will go a long way. All the parts can be had for around $200 for a low mile T25.

JulieAug 30, 2008, 3:24 pm · #6

yeah, and a KA will only cost 450 or so for a complete swap since people dont want them, while a SRDE is 900 bucks. another few hundred bucks and you can have the turbo model, instead of spending $1200 down the road later to turbo the car correctly.

just my opinion

seishukuAug 30, 2008, 3:37 pm · #7

Well, and depending on what you get, a turbo KA will end up costing the same or more too.

And really, you'd end up spending about the same to get that power out of a CA... How much do you think it would cost to get 280BHP out of a CA18DET?

brewster240Aug 30, 2008, 3:39 pm · #8

ka's are free.

I didn't know you had a S15 Sr

with all due respect, bullshit,

ive not seen one KA worth a damn that someone didnt want a fortune for... i supose as soon as SR swap people found out that people want ka's, they try and milk them for all they are worth, which most are old and tired anyways...

when i was looking at a KA swap, it was running in upwards of 1000, and thats all used parts
but also plus rebuilding the KA

but thats imo
JulieAug 30, 2008, 4:24 pm · #11

well ive seen them go for 500 bucks or less up here. it depends on what part of the country you live in, so its indeed, not bullshit

brewster240Aug 30, 2008, 4:45 pm · #15

i also have a ca swap, and most of the parts to convert your z to turbo, with a satan top mount manifold.

get a truck and drive up.

RedneckAug 30, 2008, 4:50 pm · #16

Yeah ka24's wouldn't be the cheap way to go if they weren't cheap.

blue streakAug 30, 2008, 8:39 pm · #17

by far the CA18DET is the easiest, probably the most cost effective swap. everything
fits with little or no mods. if you want, you can even use your stock tranny( the det tranny IS better though).

The same could be said of the KA on all points except that it's WAY cheaper, parts are WAY more available, and from what I've read over the past few months, the electronics are somewhat simpler.
CurlytoprobAug 31, 2008, 9:19 pm · #19

cost of the enigne isnt really an issue... i can get either a sr or ka for free... really what is the easist swap and most reliable???

CurlytoprobAug 31, 2008, 9:31 pm · #20

i also heard one actually uses the same wire harness???? is that true???

also KAs sell for like 5-700 down here. a worn out one foe like 3

jeffwins24Aug 31, 2008, 9:39 pm · #21

Go CA or KA

function over power always

or if money isn't a factor FJ20DET FTMFW

CurlytoprobAug 31, 2008, 9:51 pm · #22

whoa wait.... what is a fj20det and what does it come in?

seishukuAug 31, 2008, 10:12 pm · #23

Acutally FJ20ET, even though it's a twin cam engine... And it came in pretty much every other S12 besides US ones, also was used in the DR30 Skylines, AND a special twin carb FJ24 was used in the 240RS group B rally car.

Edit:
It's also very rare.

But the engine is really really strong, you have to admit. 15psi on stock internals all day long and still reliable... I dunno if the CA ans KA are good anymore ha ha

Anyway, it's a OLD SKOOL engine really old, but it's a really good engine any nissan enthusiast that know about the FJ is literally a MONSTER and it is lol. the rods are just as strong as the rods found in a chevy 350 V8

1983 - 1986 Silvia RSX S12
skyline RS DR30
and the 240 RS

all had the FJ engine. It's more of a performance engine then anything else. the intake and exhaust ports are BIG for a street engine. Out of all the 4 cylinders Nissan has made the FJ bests them power and reliability wise.... COST and maintenance how ever.... is a totally different story. Because the engine became old people said "lets move on the next big thing CA then SR, Then KA" Etc Etc so, parts would have to probably custom made... which in more $$$ in the end... most of them are sold cheaply because of cost...

Parts aren't impossible to find, but you HAVE to know where to look for them, they might be hard to find sometimes, but it's a old discounted engine what do you expect.

Me personally if I had the money I would totally do it.
seishukuAug 31, 2008, 11:05 pm · #25

Oh yeah, I know... I've dreamed of an FJ for a long time.
It was built around rally racing... And actually can probably handle 20+ PSI stock, it's very beefy.

Expensive to maintain though.

ArroAug 31, 2008, 11:56 pm · #26

Yep, it comes down to the money. For half of what it would cost to get one to North America and then ship in the rebuild parts, then rebuild it, it would be cheaper and quicker to build up a KA24DE from the ground up for boost, and throw on a turbo and cheap manifold.

Don't get me wrong, I worship the FJ... or at least I used to, until practicality took the forefront of my opinions.

rageSep 2, 2008, 6:55 pm · #27

fj isnt practical because if something happens, you could be down for awhile trying to source replacement parts.

i also dont see why everyone likes the CA so much, theyre only like 20yr old engines. all of them need to be atleast rebuild
